Subject: How fast can a FWD be in the 1/4???
IP: Logged

Message:
There are a few guys on another board that claim FWD Civic's and the likes are now keeping up with RWD cars in Pro Comp, etc. Like 6 seconds!

How the hell would they even get traction???
One also says there are lots of Civic's running 10's all motor, no spray etc.

Again I don't believe that either. There isn't as much un tapped HP left on a 1.6 V-Tec as there are on old school V8's. They would have to DOUBLE their stock HP to get 10's or close to that. Plus the ability to even hook it up!

Is there anyone here that has been to the tracks to watch the NASTY FWD cars???I just saw a modded GTP with a good cam, tires, S/C pulley, etc struggle to get descent 13's.

The only fast Honda cars I've seen under the 10's were just the BODY's with RWD under them.

What do you guys think of that? Is it B.S.?

check out the summit import drag series. theres fwd cars in the 7s. ya know the traction bars on the back of rwd dragsters? fwd cars use those, but when they launch those bars hydraulically press down, transfering the weight to the front wheels. weight transfer is the killer for fwd drag cars, but theyre able to keep the front tires pretty well planted. but as far as modded street fwd cars, yea its hard for those to get too low in the et's

Some racers are getting them down in to the 7's and 8's. But you have to be pretty radical about it; lots of boost, active suspension, center driver placement, etc. Underneath the fiberglass there isn't much Honda left.

Yeah they run 7's. They use wheelie type bars in the back which push the back end up which then pushes the front end down for traction.

I feel the need to jump in here and defend "OUR" dakotas. So tell me blackrtaz, how much money did he put into that all motor civic? Because i'm bettin if i put the same amount of money into my cc R/T he wouldn't be rapin it. Especially since graphite and I just saw daks doin 11s with a supercharger, In the hotter weather. I'm not sayin his car aint fast or can't be fast, just don't like the sound of " this car will absolutely RAPE! our trucks" When your comparing stock to highly modded.

Sounds like a lot of funky sh*t is you ask me. It's not like you can drive the streets with wheelie bars!

Ask Todd about that all motor 9 sec Mustang form the races.

If I was standing next to the radical Honda I'd just think it sounded like a pissed off weed eater. But standing next to a 500+ cu in BIG BLOCK like that is just damn right SCARY!!!

Screw FWD.. It's more fun to PULL the front wheel off of the ground!

This one guy in particular was saying he exchanged his 3.92 or similar gears in his Avenger for a set of 3.55. He says his Avenger can probably do better of 210MPH. I kind of think that is B.S. A Firebird with a 6 speed and 2.56:1 or similar probably could if it had enough motor and no speed limiter, but 3.55 gears and those FWD 5 speeds hardly have an ratio compared to our 5 speeds.

I was watching one of those tuner shows on speedvision a while back. They had two car clubs out of LA at the race track in Rosemond. One was a nissan club, and the other a honda.

One car owner made a comment that just floored me. He siad, "Everybody here has spent more than $100,000, so it should be competative". $100K!!! Are they crazy???

Imiagine that thought process. Lets see, I have $100K to spend on a car. Do I want a CRX? or a Z06 and a pile of cash? Or maybe a Viper and some cash? I think I'll take the CRX.

Crazy.

I agree, it is crazy the money these folks will spend to go quick in a (insert jap car here). There is an STR-4 running 8.80's in NHRA Hot Rod class (and winning) but that's a turbo-ed 2.4L. There's probably 150 grand into that one.
A 12 sec street car is pretty fast, and few between, too. A car in the 10's or 9's on the street, ever fewer. In the 80's my bro had a 10 sec Dart on the street, not much could come close to that.
I saw on speed where they moded a ricer with a cat back and other stuff and it made less power than stock, LMAO!!!

I think diesels are best, they are going amazing things with the cummins engine, plus think of the look on the ricers face when he gets his ass handed to him by an 8000lb truck. Plus you can actually use all that power in the truck to haul things.

ok guys,

i just thought i would throw my 2 cents in this thread, yeah im just a visitor but the hatch that has been talked about is my car and my roomate showed me this thread.

in my motor, my cash cost was 5k, the swap was a little more than that but i traded my previous motor to cover that.

here are the basic stats on my car

its a 1996 honda civic hatch.
its gutted (should wiegh about 2200 pounds)
has a 5lug conversion for a integra type r
with nsx brakes , and 16way adjustable dampening suspension
the motor is a k20a
2.0 and its bone stock it comes from the new integra type r that is only available in japan and europe (as compared to our rsx here which is crap by comparison to the itr)
it has a 6speed tranny with lsd
11.5-1 compression
and does about 220 to the front wheels with i/h/e and some minor fuel mods.
redline is just shy of 9k

my total investment in this car is 20k (thats including the price of the vehicle.

my car can outbrake most others, handle great and is fully capable of running 12's

i do get 27mpg and its totally reliable with less then 6k on the motor..

and in regards to graphitedak, i tend to look at the all around performance of my car, rather than how it sounds.

anyways my whole point of this post is that yeah fwd's are getting faster, when all things are equal in comparing a rwd to a fwd yeah the rwd is better, but being how light fwd's are and the power per liter alot of these cars are making. its really shouldnt be hard to believe that fwd's are getting fast..

my car for example to the wheels makes 110hp per liter of displacement, and if you look at what its making at the the flywheel like manufactures rate there vehicles its even higher than that.

in the performance world 100+ hp naturally aspirated per liter is great

Jeez did i hit a nerve? Didn't mean to offend anyone, was just stating a fact that a modded veh vs a stock usually ends up being an advantage. As for the civic beating my truck, i never made any remark that my dak would beat it, i just asked how much money it took to get it in the 12s. I will tell you one thing tho, If i had 7gs to dump into my dak it would be runnin 11s or better. See this site for a reak dak motor.(http://www.hughesengines.com/lb/360stage1.asp) I understand "Plus the car is set up for track, NOT DRAG!!" but it was you who stated it would run 12s, and i'm assuming thats a 1/4 mile time. Nobody says your bashing, but some of us take offense to "this car will absolutely RAPE! our trucks"

Thank you k20wnage for a very informative and intelligent post. I have nothing against your car or any other real race worthy fwd's import or otherwise. Infact your car sounds like its pretty sweet and i'll bet its a blast to drive with the cornering abilities and all. My dak handles pretty good with the hotchkis susp, but it would be no match for you or most other cars because of the weight dist in a truck.

Anyway, sorry blackrtaz i didn't mean to make u think i didn't believe you or whatever i said to piss you off. I just get tired of reading post about how this car or that truck can whoop our daks, when their comparing modded to stock.

no prob dude, understandable.... I hate sh!t talkers too! when I said "track not drag" I was merely implying how it can be alot "faster" if it were built to straight line it.

I am not hardcore brand-loyal(dont get me wrong I love my r/t) so yea I can see how some of you guys could take offense to "absolutely rape" comment.

It all comes down to whos d!ck is bigger in the end, right??? ha ha jk....
I think Ive had enough fun with you guys...

prowl, i didnt take offense to anything, if you were reffering to me in that case i was just stating some facts about my car..

yes for the 5grand my swap cost me there are other most cost effective ways for me to be faster in a stragiht line. but that wasnt my main deciding factor when i went with this motor.

the only reason i even stated that my car could be in the 12's solely as a reference for you guys because if i would have just said "yeah it's straight line its fast" you wouldnt know where my car stands in the regard.

but yes you make a valid point about stock vs modded. i believe he was just trying to reference something you guys can relate to.. although something like that would bug me if i were you as well..

all in all i would say this post if pretty informative!

I liked JES's comment, "It's all about dollars." I mean, think about it, if you mod anything up enough, you can make it faster. ProwlRT, I gotta agree with you about comparing stock to highly modded. If I raced my dak against Dale Jr.'s stock car, yea, I'd lose pretty freaking bad. Of course, my truck only cost me $18000, lol.
