One point of mine to consider is one reason I got rid of both of our sedans was they are road kill these days!
Seriously! While the kids are buying Civic's ( and similar) like mad and stripping what already flimsy metal they have off for fiberglass, the other 50% of the poulation here drive HEAVY A$$ Tahoes, DURANGO's and jacked up trucks, etc!
I see people running their Honda's (or vice versa) into Tahoe's, Durango's, etc and going to the ambulance on a stretcher while there was only a DENT, (A DENT!) in the Truck/Suv. This is at LOWER speeds. Consider a head on at 50 MPH! In a Honda, YOU"RE DEAD! I think heavily modded tin cans should stick to closed competitive events. You're just road kill driving that sh*t on the streets espcially in crazy places like Phoenix, AZ.

That's just my .02 I'm sure someone will dis agree. But I sure as hell feel MUCH safer in my MID SIZED truck than in a sh*t box FWD especially driving my family around.
Hopefully my Dakota would survive a collision with that jacked up F350, etc.

not "how much money do I need to make it fast."
not "how do FWD cars compare to RWD cars in the 1/4"

not "stock vs modded...."

Well. Those crushed Coors cans are what they build Honda's with.

It's because of all the American Beer drinkers that Honda gets all of that CHEAP metal to build their sh*t boxes with.

Well you should have brought that spam can to the drag races last Saturday. The best any Honda did was high 14's. 90% of them never broke low 15's. Some did 16's and 17's!

The WORST Dakota did high 13's while several did 12's.

Oh yeah. No one really answered one of my questions. But some of these FWD guys tell me that racing from 40 MPH rolls is a POPULAR thing to do rather than like drag racing from a dead stop. The guys act like I've been under a rock or something.

But seriously, here in Phoenix I've yet to know anyone who gathered together out on strips of highway to race from 40 MPH rolls.
Sounds like some boosted FWD cars just can;t hook up off the line. How pathetic.

Do any of you guys know anybody who does this on a regular basis?

And ... by the way ... this is a Dakota site ... http://www.speedoptions.com/ might serve your purposes a bit better for FWD stuff. Have a great day!

I was born and raised in the town that produces spam and my wife drives a honda! Wow what a coincidence huh! I am on my third dakota, all have been just as trouble-free as the honda also. I also live near a track where many rice owners gather to show off their fart-canned 17 second "muscle" only to have it whipped by a stock dakota. There are always a few front drivers at the track that give the dakotas a beating though. One civic crx was in the low 12s (all motor and lots of $$) and a couple of SRT-4s that were in the low 13s. There are a few mopar sponsored srt-4s running in the 8 second range also. So front drivers can be very fast if the right mind is behind designing them, but unfortunatly there are WAY to many no-minds out there gluing on an erector set wing and a fart tube thinking they are racers that cause the sport/compact sport to get a bad rap and you can thank a certain movie for that!

hey, did you notice anything special on the SRT's that enabled them to hook up all that power to the front wheels?

"erector set wing " I like that one.

I'm not in the WRONG place. I drive a Dakota. I just wanted to know if anyone here ever heard or NOTICED people go out (oragnized) and race out on a stretch of road from say 40MPH roll rather than from a dead stop like what I'm used to.
I live in Phx, sure I'm not in "car clubs" but I've never heard of people doing that. But on another (FWD) board I was told it was normal and I've been under a rock because that's how many people race now.
These guys are talking about beating Mustang Cobra's and Subaru Sti's with their FWD cars and a big turbo. But they only race them from 40 MPH rolls or so.

To me. If you can't hook up from a dead stop, say at the track or form a stop light, it's almost pointless.
Around here there are not too many places to go and race from 40 to 150 MPH, etc. You race from a light up to 50 ot 60 MAX. Or take it to the track.

What do you guys think?

I agree! It is not nearly as impressive to race from a 40mph starting point as it is from a stop. I suppose many of the 40mph starters only have their money invested in the engine and have totally ignored the much needed (and respected)traction issues. The REAL drag racers pride themselves on not only power but the careful crafting of a clever way to apply all of that power to the ground.Hey ricers, instead of wasting money and time installing a wing on your trunk that (maybe) will force the rearend of your front wheel drive vehicle down, maybe you should find a way to stuff it under the hood where weight is really needed! A lot of the sub 9 second front drivers actually use wheelie bars that apply force to the road while standing still to artificially lenghten the wheelbase and most of these guys have no wings at all. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I would rather be fast than look fast. Anyone with me?

"hey"
You do make a few good points.
I do drive one of those so called "rice rockets" so I felt compelled to chime in.
To answer the original question i believe the fastest fwd runs high 7's rite now. Last time i checked ed bergenholtz (crx) was running low 8's and lisa kubo (civic h/b and now a saturn) is running high 7's. There are a lot of low 9 second cars (so many it's not worth naming) and quite a few 8 second cars. mopar is hitting it hard with the srt. It's a great car to build upon.
They get the power to the ground by using lsd's, larger slicks, and the traction bars (correct me if i'm wrong) I do belive that they cannot be pre-loaded. A lot also has to do with suspension geometry. re-designd lower control arms, traction bars. and some even still use limiting straps.
Whenever i run at the track i'm teamed up against older muscle cars (pro-class) or "sport cars" such as supra's rx-7's etc..I'm usually the only sub 13 second honda there. Like you said most are high 14 or 15 second cars. There is usally a fast ram there, she runs high 11's i believe.

Hybrid, I guess I am behind the times and should really keep up! I have a lot of respect for the front drive drag racers. I am pretty sure that I read an article on Bergenholtz's crx in a motor trend some years ago ( I know I have it somewhere) and that article is what got me so interested in front drive drag racing. I only wish I had the money to start building one. I have to find that damn magazine now cause I think he was running pre-loaded bars on it. I may be wrong but I know I read it somewhere and it does make sense. I know the srt's that are running have a much more sophisticated chassis and don't use such bars which make them even more impressive, but I did not know that some where even down in the 7 second range-incredible! Many die hard drag racers may only consider a real racer to be a rear drive muscle car but what a muscle car was in the 60s and early 70s is what a lot of front drivers are now-affordable cars that are quick but with some tuning can be made quicker. Man, its beginning to look like I am posting on the wrong website huh? Thanks for the info!

But you can't exactly go running wheelie bars on the streets! I'm being serious and funny at the same time!!

But you can run traction bars on muscle car which actually looks cool! Wheelie bars, that would be hilarious!

I kind of wouldn't mind seeing DOdge throw the 4.7 into a mid sized RWD CAR.
They should make a new 4.7 Duster or something and go back to RWD so it could be CHEAP and fun to build up. Plus going sideways with RWD is more fun.

I acknowldge there are people actually running fast as hell FWD cars (but only a SMALL percentage actually are fast) but they are obviously a pain to get to hook up.

I like the part hey said about using the WING up front for weight. That's about all they are good for.
That and laughing at. I never take anyone with a WING seriously. And at the track NONE of the fast FWD cars have WINGS or goofy lights. ONLY the 16,17 sec ones do!
