This is probably a no-brainer, but is the nut that holds the clutch fan on reverse-threaded???
(Loosens by turning clockwise)

Yes it is. 36mm will loosen it. Do a search, I think a 15/16 will
also work on it.

no, its not a 15/16th.... its a 1 & 7/16th those are hard to find.... buy a cheapo 1 1/4 and dremel it out to the right size.

Free HP,Remove that fan shroud with the four screws, jam a small wooden wedge between the back side of the belt and the water pump pulley, to keep it from spinning. Get a 12" crescent wrench like BUCK HARLEY said and whack it to the left without breaking stuff. Then get an electric fan and forget that fan clutch. The next time my fan clutch goes out, that's what I'm doing. You could free-up some H.P. that way. Relf.

I had probs finding the 1 7/16th.. but I didn't look to hard....

yeah jsut keep whacking the sucker...it'll break loose eventually...you just have to get a good impact.... I used a 5 lb hammer. Two hits and it broke free -just like me on my bong(LOL)
theres supposedly a hole that you can 'lock' the pulley in place with a screwdriver...another choice you have is to replace your belt... a new belt should grip it strong enough to hold it still.... if its slipping anyways, you proly should replace it anyways, since you'll want to make sure your pump is fully functional once that fans gone....or have some one nuts enough to put pressure down on the belt tensioner with a wrench while you whack at it (in their direction!)

BTW I'm a bit confused, maybe its all the resin in my head, but I don't think its reverse threaded, it just seems that way since your facing it "Righty tighty.. lefty loosey" if you were turning it clockwise it'd be turned from left to right...Right?..I mean correct?

either way, whatever to my last thought...

hitting it from the drivers to the passengers side from the front of the vehicle should break it free.... I took mine off two weeks ago..... lovin it!!! much better RPM buildup, and much smoother operation...mines an R/T with the elec fan... I still cant figure out why they put those clutch fans on in the first place... I live in Miami and it was 90 out today, no difference in temp without it!....

OK.... I asked if the nut turned clockwise to remove it. This would mean turning it from passenger-side to driver-side standing at the front of the truck. The first response said "Yes, it is (reverse-threaded)" and a few replies later said "right to left" - which would be counter-clockwise. Which is right???

Free HP, If you're standing in front of your truck, looking at the engine, loosen the nut by turning it FROM right TO left. Driver to passenger. Squeeze in some WD-40 or something too. Relf.

facing the truck with the drivers side to the right and the passenger to the left. you can get the wrench from autozone for about $32.00 and then when you take it back they give you your money back. The $32.00 is just a deposit in case you run off with the wrench. i jammed a screw driver between the pulley and the water pump housing, give a couple taps with a hammer to make sure it fits tight. you can then either hit it off with a hammer towards the passenger side of the truck or keep turning it and eventually the screw driver will wedge enough to brake it loose. no penetrants are needed but you can use them if you want, and don't worry about getting it on the belt it will fly off or burn off quickly. it shouldn't take more than 3 minutes to remove that heavy bitch of a fan.

not on top of it, moron, in front of it. try reading the replys before you smart off. and the question was asked many times, so it was answered many times.

all i did with mine was sprayed it with some parts loosener, clamped on a vise grip and hit the vise with a rubber mallet. took a few tries but it popped loose eventually with a good solid smack, then just spun it right off. did this to my '02 3.9 with a factory electric fan. i also removed the fan shroud, so now you can see the front of my motor much easier, really opens up the engine compartment. it runs awesome, great free mod
