Guys

Its not worth bashing each other over personal choices and perspectives when we all should be able to discuss these things in a civil way.
I came here to talk to new people and learn more about my r/t(and 4.7s,5.2s etc) but almost every other thread looks like it turned into a flame fest.
I would like to offer a little "factual" info about the r/t, but it is not intended to offend or persuade anyone.
I got my '99 used with 11K on it. Two wks after buying it I did take it to the track and ran a 14.94@89 which I still think is respectable. Like everyone has stated, these things are heavy and a stang or camaro has a 500lb+ weight advantage immedietly. So running that time suggested to me that it had a lot more potential and thats great because I intended to mod it anyway!
There is something cool about making these heavy things get up and go especially n/a.
When I got my r/t it was the closest thing to a stang or camaro(late models) that Dodge offered. Im happy with mine and the work and $$ Ive put into it have shown respectable gains.
Anyhow, there is a lot of potential with the r/t and making the right combinations of mods will(or will not with wrong combo) net good performance gains. Check out the dakotart.com forum and tell them that these trucks are slow... Take care

I certainly have nothing against dumping some money into my
Dakota. It's only a 6 and I only expect to get so much
performance out of it. I have a realistic attitude about what kind
of track times I can get out of it before I hit the brakes on the
money train. Unfortuantely I'm a victim to a sharp looking
vehicle over its performance. Sure this truck is a pig, but it
hauls stuff and is comfortable. Instead of wasting money to
supercharge it for maybe 1.5 seconds more of speed I'd rather
go find a b-body project car or something capable of more.

my original post wasnt to offend the good guys on here.i was looking to annoy the few idiots who think that their truck, whether its a 4.7,5.2 or an r/t,rules the road and will beat anything, guys, you know who you are!

also it was to vent a little.im not rich,so as far as the whole racing/muslecar genre goes i made a financial mistake.i cant afford to throw 20k down on one of these things to make it the monster i want it.i probably can afford to throw 5-10k on a camaro to do it.

i really do love this truck so im not gonna bash it,too much.the two things i have always wanted as far as cars go:a camaro SS and a dakota r/t.,ever since they both came out in 98.i wanted the camaro a little more.and my truck is going to be with my dad anyway,so i can go get it and cruise anytime i want.

and im aware the ss camaro was around in the late 60s,and came back in 96,im talking LS1 cars.

Its cool- you are not offending those of us who know the basics of performance here- the weight to start with! You made that point so I totally understand.
I know what you are saying about being rich too. I have had this truck for 4 years and its taken this long to get here. A mod here, a mod there seems to drag on forever. Seems like some owners are able to sink a couple grand into their r/t overnight!
Anyway, let me know what happens with the SS- sounds like something to look forward to.

Only problem I see is that your gonna have a hard time finding decent replacement body parts for a discontinued car... Plus the camaro SS which had 15k dropped into it by MuscleCar magazine ( I think) actually ran slower than stock. theres not too much that can be done to a camaro, that can't be done for equal cost to a R/T, and keeping in mind that the R/T is almost twice the weight, it can be made almost just as fast.

have a hard time finding replacement body parts?i dont plan on wrecking it,but there are a slew of oem replacement parts anyway.and there are umlimited aftermarket mods for this car.and youre gonna drop at least 5k in an r/t just to make it as fast as my stock camaro.i had one,its not worth it.muscle car magazine dropped 15k into an SS and it runs slower?thats ridiculous!maybe if it was spinning all the way down the track!theres a guy here in town who spent 12k on a 396 stroker for the car andwith no suspension work he ran a high10at the track last week.the potential for these cars is endless.the r/ts potential ends after about $15k running mid 12s and not being a reliable truck anymore.i still like r/ts,a great truck, but it doesnt have the potential to be a hot rod like my Z28 will,so i will be happier.

if you know how to drive it, all you need is a set of slicks to run 12's.

My parents have one that that has about $1000 in performance mods and it has dynoed 330 rwhp and it's an automatic. We havent run it at the track because it's my mom's car but it's held it's own against a few cars on the street including a Z06.

I have several buddies with F-bodies (three in the family) and it doesnt take much to make them quick. Hell, one i have seen at a dyno shop had the ATI Procharger kit, aftermarket cam, head work and computer programming. No where near $15k of mods and it was throwing down 579 rwhp. Dont tell me that doesnt run better than stock!

Replacement body parts are still being made by the aftermarket. The Dakota is about to get a face lift, do you think that all the "OEM" replacement companies are just gonna quit making parts for em?

Enjoy your F-body... they are a lot of fun!

intensedak, you have a nice ass truck!have you taken it out to the track,or maybe a dyno?

i know a guy who works at the goodyear proving grounds here,im trying to get him to see if he can pull some strings to let me go out on some of the courses, probably after i have some mods done.he said its a possibility.it would be some fun practice.

the only thing i dont like about this car so far is the exhaust is a little too quiet for me.

thanx!

no i havent taken it to either with the current motor. I been breaking a few parts... mmmmmmmm torque.

The old 3.9 ran a best of 13.52 on the 1/4.

For the exhaust, get the SLP y-pipe and SLP loud mouth exhaust. The y-pipe is 2.5" mandrel (instead of that nasty flat spot on the factory) into a single 3". The loud mouth exhaust is 3" into dual 3" with 4.5" tips.... no muffler. It's loud! but a good loud. thats what we have on my mom's car.

i would hold off on the cats for now. Get some full lenght headers (i think that's all they may for the LS1). Depending on the brand, they can add up to 40 hp and you wouldnt use cats with them if you get my drift.

LS1s react great to mods. Muscle Mustang & Fast Ford magazine (greatest drivers in the world?!) ran a 12.81 at 109mph with a bone stock, including tires '02 SS in 70 degree weather.

The editor from GM Hightech Performance has run every LS1 power model to the tune of 12's, showroom new. That's including SS, Trans AM, and Z28's.

It doesnt take much to make those things faster either. The only thing holding em back is the we old little 7 5/8- 7 7/8 rear axle. Pretty frocking stupid for a 320 hp car.

and wouldnt use cats?the hell you say!hahahaha.
