I'm checking with Hanson Enterprise, Inc. to see if a rear bumper is available for the Dakota. Their front bumpers are awesome, and they do make a rear bumper for Rams. I know what you're saying -- something with lights, a hitch, schackles, Hi-Lift jack points, etc... would be nice. I live about an hour north of Hanson's shop, so I'm trying to set up a time when I can visit and talk face to face.

I was up at wayne's shop over the summer and he said he is intending to make a rear bumper for the dakotas but right now is so swamped wih orders for the front bumpers that he just doesn't have time. I got one of his front bumpers for my truck. Best advice I can give you for getting ahold of him is to call between 10 and 11 or 1 and 3 california time during the week that's when he's in his office and someone usually will pick up. I lave the bumper but make sure you get some stronger springs for the front before you put it on as it weighs 190lbs with the winch on.

I just spoke with Wayne at Hanson Enterprise. He was in the process of returning phone calls, so with any luck, Doc, you might get a call back.

As for a rear bumper, nothing available yet (CadetDak you're right on). Wayne hasn't had the chance to even begin design/engineering, and the process could take a while. After all the CAD work is complete, he would need to build a prototype (expensive) and program all the laser cutters and welders. Actually, the Dodge Ram rear bumper on his website is in the prototype stage and not yet available for sale.

BTW, if you're interested in the front bumper, lead time is about 4 weeks at best -- he just got an order for 20 bumpers the other day!!

So we're back to square one, Knobbyman. Anyone know who makes a rear bumper??

I found a local shop around here in Dallas that is going to make a custom rear bumper for me I'm about to drive out there now so I'll let you guys know what they have to say.. OH!! by the way OEM rear bumpers for the Dakota.. For the Crome part ONLY is +$500 for a knock off that looks just like it but doesn't have a mopar stamp on the inside of the bumper where you can't see it costs ~$200. So if you guys need to get a new rear bumper think twice about Mopar parts.

Speaking of "get what you pay for". I called and obtained a price quote on a FRONT Dakota bumper from Factory Tubular Accessories, in Salt Lake City. You can see the bumper here:

http://members.networld.com/rogerd/dak.htm

Anyone want to take a guess what this bumper cost?

.
.
.

$1600 for the bare bumper.

You would then have to pay more money to have it powder coated or chromed. PLUS, they need to keep your truck for a week to build the bumper. That means I have to load the Dakota on the auto transport trailer that I normally haul my Jeep with, and tow it 250 miles to Salt Lake City with my Ram 3500 4x4. Then a week later I have to make the 250 mile trip all over again to pick up the truck when they are done. Add the cost of diesel fuel for the Ram 3500, to the cost of a new set of driving lights to mount on the new bumper, to the cost of powder coating, ... and you have a bumper that easily cost $2500!

Yikes!

Doc.

I contacted Trail Ready about the rear bumper. They are planning on making a rear bumper to match there front bumper. But neither will be out until some time in 2002. I asked how much it would be to have them start working on the rear bumper now. Total cost if I wanted a rear bumper from them ASAP would be somewhere around $2,000. Although I like them and all that's crazy talk. I went to a local 4x4 shop who does custom fabrication work and they quoted me from $300 for a rear bumper. That includes R&D and everything. So that's what I'm going to do. It's going to be made out of 1/4" C channel Steel the inside is going to be somewhat open the center part will be open where the ends are capped *to keep the mud out* there are going to be reverse lights, schackles, and a reciever hitch. The only other cost I have to worry about is the cost of painting it. That will have to be determined after the bumper is finished but I'm guessing it's going to be around $200 for a good color match job.

Well I'm not sure ;-) I have to call them on Friday to get the word on it. But it's going to be made out of 6" C channel with reverse lights about half way from the licance plate to the ends. I'm going to have the holes cut by the same lazer place that did the brackets .. but it's goign to be pricy :'( $150 just to cut the holes. Then something like $200 to spray the Rhino Liner on it. Not to mention the cost of fabing the actual bumper. ;-)

It'll have flush mounted flood lights(if I can find some). Tow shackles. Tread plate on top. (Don't forget the hole for the spare tire thing) It'll be BEEFY too!! I'm thinking 11 guage steel with stanless inserts. All stainless hardware and brackets. Tell me what ya'll think. Maybe I'll have some pics if I ever get it done.

I'm still debaiting about the hole for the spare tire. I need to find out for a fact the 33's fit underneith before I drill the hole.

Rhino will cost ~$200 I'm trying to find the roll on do it your self liner but I've been unsucessful so far. I think HomeDepo will be my next stop *today*. I have not cut the holes for the lights yet because I'm waiting to get the lights *x-mas gift* but they will be PIA reverse lights part # PIA4040 they will go towards the ends to the outside of the schackles. The hole that I'm going to cust is going to be basically 4 or 6 holes right next to eachother so I'll have my bumper acting like a screen to cover the light from rocks & other such objects. I've taken multiple shots of the bumper but the flash I have is to darn strong so I'm really needing to take one durring the day but I keep forgetting. Yea we do need to have the rear plate visable right now it's in the back window. I'm going to actually rhino line the whole thing but I can't find the do it your self stuff *herculiner* There are going to be 2 reverse lights just to the outside of those schackles and the licance plate will go just to the left of the reciever hitch.

I also thought of the body lift.. the way we made it all I have to do is drill 3 more holes in the brackets for the bumper and I'm good to go. We left them big enough so that I can lift everything with out any problems :-)

Rhino liner should look pretty cool after seeing Dan's Dak done up with the stuff, maybe do the fender flares and front bumper chrome to match? Knobby, you think the bumper with raised brackets for body lift would be strong enough? When you do your lift, I'd like to hear how it worked out for ya.

The angle that the schacles will be pulled upon is going to be the same. Only differance is instead of drilling the holes in the top half of the bracket I'll be drilling them in the bottom half of it. *bracket is 6 1/2" tall.

$390 is not outlandish. Remember, this was a CUSTOM bumper. Unless a welding shop has already built one just like it, design time and fabrication will usually run a day (8 hrs) minimum @ $25-$50 per hour. Shops like Duffco, Trail Ready, and Hanson Ent. have the R&D all worked out, pre-cut material on hand, and a crew of welders. Cost it pretty minimal because fab time may only take a couple of hours. Ask those guys how much their first prototype cost, and I bet you it's in the thousands of $$$ -- even for the simple stuff.
