Yea well,
water is water, and coolant is coolant, easy to tell or rule out if it's coming from the closed systems of the motor/coolant.

ON my 01, I"ve had this problem, and I can tell you that with the sealed layer under the mat, any moisture under it will be trapped a LONG time.

It could conceiveably have been there for weeks, it doesn't dry out without pulling the carpet back and using a fan, etc.

basically, it SUCKS!

I just got a rebuilt (salvaged) 2001 4x4 quad cab. CAn you tell me how to check if I have this infamous problem? Where is this drain tube located. I'm not overly familiar with the truck yet since I've only had it about a week but if I have this problem, I'd like to nip it in the bud now.

If anyone can tell me how to check for this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

This is my first post to this group. After going through this problem with my 98 Dakota, I thought I'd share my experience. I noticed after heavy rains that my passenger-side floorboard was a puddle. So I tore out my plastic panels and pulled up the carpet trying to find the source. Couldn't find a leak anywhere.

After reading some posts, I tried looking for a leak near the firewall. I knew it couldn't be the AC since the puddle manifested itself only after rain showers. I spent a half hour trying to find a hole in my firewall and pulled the fender well out looking for a crack or mis-weld. I Found nothing.

After reading a couple more posts, I came across MikeC's post about the rear window leaking. Since I was out of ideas, i pulled up the passenger-side rear seat. I noticed a little bit of water on the floorboard beneath the plastic. To attempt to reproduce the probem, I poured a little bit of high-quality H2O on the back side of the roof and noticed how the water ran around the window. I got in the back of the truck and saw wetness all around the inside of the window and heard the water trickling down the inside of the truck. I spoke profanities and drove to Walmart to purchase silicon caulk. I'll be sealing it up tomorrow.

Applause to MikeC for the great pointer.

I too had heater core leaking fluid under carpet on driver's side. Anyone know how to get the narrow and long plastic trim off that holds the carpet down at the edge of the door? I tried only succeeding in breaking a tab.

When I took mine off today, I just pulled it straight up and it popped out of the tabs pretty easily. I hope it's as easy for you.

I have had this problem, my husband on the first go around took it to the dealer and had it fixed under warranty. He was told as he thought that it was the A/C drain. ONLY TIME I HAD THIS PROBLEM WAS ON SUMMER DAYS WITH HIGH HUMIDITY. It happened again this summer and this time my husband went under my truck and removed the metal piece on the firewall where the A/C drain is and did some mods to it and replaced it, I haven't had any further problem. I own a 2002 Dakota 4X4.

Sounds like what happened to me..The dodge dealer took the metal plate off the fire wall..where the drain comes out...and it turned out there is a factory seam in the firewall right behind this plate...they sealed the seam with some stuff..that was a few weeks ago and it hasnt leaked since...a factory oversight.

Thank the maker for this website. I just got a used 96 Dak extended cab.. Took the kid over to a friends house when it was just starting to rain. Dry floorboard. Poured the whole way to his house. When I got there, there was literally an inch of standing water on the passenger floorboard in front of the seat and in the rear pan in the extended cab section behind the seat. The carpet between the two areas along the lower molding was soaked as well. Thank God I had a bunch of my kids diapers with me.. Since I was stuck in a freakin monsoon away from my home resources, I put those diapers down quick and they soaked that water up really quick. Felt like at least a 5 pound diaper when I took it out! HA.. Thanks to this site I know where to start looking. Looks like me and David had the same problem with the door. The rear window was dry as a bone all around, but who knows, under the interior moldings it might have been wet.

This water thing really sucks! While I have not seen nor felt water in my 2003 R/T YET...I'll be keeping a good look-out. I did take a look at the firewall regarding the drain tube from the air-con, and with that hunkin' 360 block in front of it and actually hiding it from any wind...I'll hope that the reports of water being forced back up the tube by wind will not affect an R/T.

I hope....sheesh...

Colin,

If you never had a leak before, and it just happened now, I think I know what it is...In fact, I am 99% sure I know what it is, and its an easy fix (I just solved mine).

Step 1- look under your glove box, your heater box is there, and the neumatic actuator for the vent controls is there (squished tennis ball size). Right beside it is the vent for floor heat. Put your finger in there and I bet there is a puddle of water in it. Feel around.

Step 2 - if there is water there, you are all set. Water is coming down the windshield as it should. It then hits the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield. There is a thin foam gasket inside the edge of the cowl, and I am willing to bet with age, they start to really suck...and water is flowing right by it.

Step 3 - Remove the cowl. Not hard at all, just some clips and the wiper arms. Voila.

Step 4 - Look at the base of the windshield on the passenger side. There is a little plastic clip used to sit the lower edge of the windshield on. Reach in behind in (on the right side behind the sheet metal) and squeeze the tabs and remove the clip.

Step 5 - There is now a small hole where the clip was. Right below this hole is the intake for your heater/air box. Water is flowing past the cowl, and over/around this clip. It accumulates and drips off the bottom of the clip and drains right into the heater box, and proceeds to spill all over the floor (esp in heavy rain).

Step 6 - Clean the surface up, and the clip. Get some clear silicone, and seal up the base of the clip and all around that hole, and re-install the clip, ensuring the silicone has made a good seal all around it.

Step 7 - Reassemble cowl.

Step 8 - Drive with the floor heat on to dry the carpet for a day or two

Step 9 - Enjoy having a dry truck again, and the fact that it took me 6 hours and three other "I think I fixed its" to figure this out.

Cheers! Let us know if it worked.

I have an 02 Dakota 2Dr. club cab that has a factory installed swimming pool on the pass. floor. My very helpful local dealer has been unable to fix the leak - rain sensitive. 6 trys now. Dodge trucks is considering what to do for me since it is no longer under lemon law - in NY 18 mos 18K. Love my truck except for the swimming pool accessory - very annoying here when it is -10F. I am providing a copy of all these posts to the Dodge truck guy. We should all take them back to the dealers. My next Dodge truck will be a Harley - at least then I will expect to get wet in the rain!

I had to deal with three leaks on my 01 CC. All of them were on the passenger side. First one I fixed was the AC problem at the firewall. The next was a leak at the top of the windshield. The last one was a badly sealed lap joint on the floor pan just inboard of the door hinge area. The last one was the hardest to find.

Took my Dakota to the dealer with the lake on the passenger floor today. They said that they found that the seal between the housing and the bulkhead had worn out (not likly on 2002) but they said that they replaced it and sealed it up. I will keep an eye on it and see if the water comes back.

Had the truck dealt with by another dealer only after repeated emails and certified mail contact with Chrysler/Dodge, including rising to the point of threatening legal action. It was only then (after filing a claim for a new truck) that I received any contact from Chrysler. The new dealer appears to have remedied the problem, as the floor has remained dry through several rain storms, though I remain a skeptic. They replaced a drain tube and sealed it on installation (which I take to mean covered it and the whole general area with silicone. Now I need to have them replace all the seat mounting brackets as they are rusting from all the water that lived in the interior for so long. All in all it took too much constant and escalating complaining (cerified mail costs postage plus nearly $5.00 each time it is sent) for something that should have been resolved more quickly, easily and friendlier. In fairness though I should report that I recently had a nearly as negative experience with a representative of Jaguar Motor Cars concerning a car that sells for over $60K. Time Will Tell.

I got my truck back and on the ticket they said they performed TSB 24-65-24-92 and then later on the same ticket is gives the TSB 23-010-04. RESEAL A/C DRAIN AT COWL OUTLET. To me it does not look like they did anything but time will tell. I would like to get a copy of these tsb's to see how they addressed the issue in detail.
