Howdy,

This is Off Topic (or is it?). I am talking long drain. My mother just got a 2003 Land Rover Discovery 4.6L. The owners manual states to change the engine oil every 7,000 miles!

I plan on using Mobil-1. Is 7,000 miles insane?? I usually change M-1 at 4,000 max.

What makes this engine different from ones with 3,000 miles suggested changes??

Steven, my mother is a true off-roader (horses/hunting/farming/etc) If she's gonna push this off-roader to 7,000 miles should she use a better oil?

Thanks,
John

John,

Most cars today call for between 3k - 7k mile oil change intervals, which is still far shorter than recommendations in Europe. NOTE: ALL EUROPEAN OILS ARE CERTIFIED TO A HIGHER STANDARD THAN WHAT YOU FIND "on-the-shelf" IN AMERICA. In most cases, the recommended 3k mile oil change interval is if your driving is considered severe service and 7k mile oil change interval is normal service. For the record, I would never take any "dino" oil to 7k miles even thought many manufacturers state that it can be done. Mobil1 can easily handle 7k miles between changes. If you are concerned you should consider Amsoil. You can't go wrong with Amsoil, our oils are capable of much longer drain intervals than the 7k miles recommended in your owners manual. With oil analysis our best oil is capable of 2 - 3 times manufacturers recommendations.

John2, you asked:

Things are slowly changing with regard to the 3K interval, although the Jiffy Lube's of the World hope they won't.

Audi of America (wife's car) has gone to a 10,000 mile interval for severe service. Toyota/Lexus is using a 5,000 mile interval for severe service.

Let's hope the quality of the oils keeps up. I know the Mercedes engines were blowing up if they weren't using synthetics in America. Steven is correct in saying the oils in Europe are better. Now there is a yellow sticker in every Mercedes Owners Manual stating that synthetic is a requirement.

You're right GKillian! According to the Mobil 1 website, Mercedes fills up with Mobil 1. And Chrysler uses it in the VIPER!!

Read about it:

"Every car produced in the factory in Stuttgart gets its first oil from Mobil 1. And that means that all our cars and engines are developed with that product."
– Herbert Ampferer, Director,
Porsche Motorsports

"Mobil 1 is the only oil we use for our engines as the first filling. And then we put the sticker in the engine compartment just to make sure that people know what's in their engines."
– Domingos Piedade, Managing Director,
Mercedes-Benz AMG

"Based upon the results we saw several years ago in endurance racing with Team Shelby, we felt Mobil 1 could do the job in the Viper, Dodge's highest-performance sports car."
– Charlie Brown III, Viper Engine Supervisor,
DaimlerChrysler Corporation

I don't understand your point. So what if DC uses M1 from the factory. I was talking about the lies of 3k oil changes.

Dark Oil Answer - from the Amsoil Guy
IP: Logged

Message:

Well, I searched and searched for the Subject Line:

... Dark Oil, Dirty Oil, Etc., ...

(to make an addition) ... and found nothing, so I am posting on this old thread.

Someone asked the following via Email and I thought everyone would benefit from the information.
__________________________________________________

I was asked, "Shouldn't oil be changed when it is dirty. Doesn't Amsoil get dirty enough at 3000 miles to change it? Should dirty oil continue to be used even if it is Amsoil?"

Do you mean "dirty", "dark", or ... "depleted of it's additives package" and therefore rendering the oil uncapable of performing the job it was formulated to do.

Most oils have detergents and dispersants as part of their additives package. The darkening results from suspended particulates too fine to be trapped by the filter. This is good because it's visual evidence showing that the detergent/dispersant package is doing its job. If you were to use a non-detergent oil --- your oil would be almost as clean coming out as going in --- in a well maintained and trouble-free engine. HOWEVER, the visual look of "darkened" oil to the human eye is not always from suspended particles ( which is more common in diesels ) - it is usually from some soluble cleaning of left-over residuals as well as chemical changes to the oils additives package itself which render it less translucent, but don't immediately make the oil spent.

All oils will turn dark (black) given enough time. Thinner oils will turn black quicker than thicker ones.

Bottom Line --- DARK OIL IS NOT BAD OIL and THE COLOR IS NOT AN INDICATOR OF OIL CHANGE INTERVALS. And ... the 3k mile oil change is the industries (Quickie Lubes) way of getting more money out of your pocket. In Europe most cars have recommended oil change intervals of between 10k - 12k miles (or more). Here in America I am seeing manufacturers recommending 5k - 7.5k oil change intervals ---- soon to be extended --- WITH THE RECOMMENDATION IN THE OWNERS MANUAL TO ONLY USE SYNTHETIC OIL.

Thanks Steven,

Since synthetics only have about a 5%-7% market share right now, any additional advertising from big companies (Mobil1, etc) can only help the smaller companies like Redline, Amsoil, etc. that honestly do make a better product.

The better basestocks are more expensive, as are the better additives packages, so it's easy to understand why Redline and/or Amsoil isn't $4.00-$5.00/quart.

I expect to see drain intervals more like they are running in Europe as well --- of 10k-15k miles. I lived in Europe for a few years so I know. When I first took my car to the European dealer asking for an oil change at 3k miles they laughed their f-cking heads off.

I look foward to the next 10-15 years - I think you'll see tremendous growth in the synthetic lubricant market. We are at the end of the beginning for synthetics ... not the beginning of the end.

Good luck with your Amsoil business, they are certainly cutting edge and I am sure you feel good about selling the Amsoil products.

Amsoil Extended Drain is the Best In The Industry
IP: Logged

Message:

Well, it's Valentines Day --- and my wife is in Los Angeles for the premiere of a short film. What is a man to do if he is alone on Valentines Day but go hit a few golf balls and get on the computer when the sun goes down. So --- here I am.

I read this post on another forum (BITOG) that was posted from a fellow Amsoil Dealer with 25 Years In The Industry --- actually working as a Propulsion & Materials Engineer. Like him, I am asked the question many times per week ... Which Oil, For Which Engine, and What Drain Intervals?, so I thought I'd post his comments here. He likes to refer to his information as --- "Pre-Emptive Warfare", by answering questions of general interest, before they are asked. I think I will use this tag line in the future ; - )
_________________________________________________

These are not hard and fast rules, but have worked well for him over the past 25 years ...

Amsoil Series 2000, 0w-30 ... Very high performance 4/6/8, cylinder engines, particularly turbocharged four cylinder engines, with drain intervals of 10k-15k miles, depending on operating conditions. Also good for automotive diesels like the VW TDI that call for VW 505 or ACEA "B4" specifications ...

Amsoil 5w-30/10w-30 ... Domestic, non-turbocharged, 4/6/8 cylinder engines with drain intervals up to 20k/15k/12k respectively ...

Amsoil Series 3000, 5w-30 ... Domestic, non-turbocharged, 4/6/8 engines with drain intervals up to 25k/20k/15k miles, respectively. "Problem" engines like the 3.0L, Toyota V-6 and the 2.4L Nissan engine used in the Altima, or other engines that badly shear the oil. Marine Inboards and Motorcycle/ATV applications that call for JASO-MA, wet clutch performance.

Amsoil 10w-40/15w-40 ... high mileage, worn engines with drain intervals up to 15k miles; Marine inboards; motorcycles and all types of diesel engines.

Amsoil S2000, 20w-50 ... very high mileage, older European engines, most of which allow the use of 20w-50 down to -10C/+14F.
