My 4,7 engine sounds strange. From about 1600-1700 revs engine sound becomes I would say metallic and irritating. There is also slight vibration felt on the flooring.Any advice is welcome.

Is (matallic) a reasonable word to be using to discribe what you hear? Only thing coming to mind that is a metallic sound would be serious piston pinging. It would increase as you press on the gas. This sound correct? Is the engine idling rough or does this viberation start when the noise startes. It's really hard to nail down a noise by corespondance. Hard enough to do when looking at the engine lol . How about a better discription. Does it change with more revs? louder or quieter. Does it viberate at idle. Does viberation go away as you rev higher . How is your oil presure? Any changes? Is it a standard? Maybe making the noise only with cluch pedal pushed in? Anything you can think of that might help, throw it out there. Your discriing piston slap/pinging. how long has it been going on. Has it increased in loudness. Can you make it louder by working the gas. Does it go away when you take your foot off the gas say going down hill.

Dude, Mike, I have the same thing at the same rpms...

I first thought it was a horrible case of ping... but it goes away
above 2000 rpm... plus i know what ping sounds like and I kinda
knew it was not that anyways...

It sounds like some metal pieces.. like thin metal pieces are
vibrating between eachother.... meh, thats a horrible explanation
but... it is all i can think of.

But I dont know what the problem is either.

That's a good explanation . It sounds like a heat sheild some where under the hood or trany area. Good explanation . take a good look for missing bolts or cracked tin work somewhere

Seems that CJ has exactly the same problem.
My Dak is '04 and has 21 k.So,she is pretty young. At least to young for serious engine malfunction(?)Idling is OK.Over 2000revs it gets quieter. It is heard much better inside than outside at opened hood.To describe the sound, some could call it ricy It has very high frequency, resembles sport cars high revs engines like Formula 1 working at 15-19k revs.Definitelly this is not a clutch bearing-mine is auto.I'wondering if it is cat damaged.Crushed ceramic filling could sound like that, but due to the close location of cats and engine ,I'm not able to "isolate"this sound.

mikesz could it be the power steering pump or alternator whining?By your description thats what it could be. Never heard of a failed cat sounding like a high revving formula car. I get some whine at those rpm`s(waaa waaa)and some pedal vibration too.I`ve heard the pedal vibration is a real problem with the 70mm TB`s. It`s there to begin with a little and I think and the 70mm TB exaggerates it.

I have an 2002 with 62k, 4.7 manual trans with same sound in the same rpm range. This metalic ping is only heard in 1st and 2nd under acceleration. Change in fuel type has no affect, all temp ranges and oil psi ranges. I also get a squeeking sound during stop and go traffic that goes away when the clutch is depressed. Looks like clutch problems..warranty item??I'll just have to do it myself since dodge did such a great job with my ball joints lol

Stop using AGIP.

My high mileage engine recently developed a heat shield sounding noise that I couldn't find. I thought maybe it could be the catalyic converter or muffler.
You might check oil and brake lines near the engine.

ED.... long as it's under warrenty, let them do it. Free is free. These cluch things are inconsistant. They might fix it and it goes out again in 6 months and then again it may go for years. well worth trying.
MIKESZ....... Don't bank on low milage. chit happens. and adding to the list how about the water pump or fan cluch. I guess when it gets bad enough, you guys will find it pretty easy

Are you sure it's not something like a washer ringing on a bolt where the nut is backing off and comming loose? Some things vibrate at certain rpm's and may not at higher rpm's. I had one ring on a 92' chev. Couldn't find that sucker until I took it in and it was afront end componant that was loose. Threads got wiped out from being losses and it cost $75 for a new componant.

Strange things happen... Years ago I bought a 78 Chevy blazer . It had so many rattles in it all I could do was go front to back, back and forth till finally I had them all.........except one. New it was up front . I looked for this rattle daily for 3 weeks, driving me nuts. Very bad rattle. Finally I took the cowl apart and there it was. A 9/16 open/box end wrench laying under the wiper motor. you just never know what your going to come up with.

My 1999 Dakota has a ticking sound that I can only hear after it is warmed up and I've been driving for a while.

It is loudest on the passenger side by the door. I probed around with my mechanics stethoscope and found that it is somewhere in the exhaust before the catalytic converter.

The stethoscope came in real handy. If you don't have one, you can use a long wooden dowel and just hold it to the part to listen to and the other end to your ear. Just be careful not to get it near any moving parts!!!

One can also test the catalytic converter by lightly tapping on the bottom of it with the car off using a rubber mallet or something similar. If it rattles, it is time for a new one.

So, the list gets pretty long.
Luckilly have no clutch(auto)and fan clutch-removed some months ago.
What is left?
-cats
-shields
-washers & nuts
-alternator
-power steering pump
-water pump
-brake lines
Additionally, what I didn't mention before, this sound sometimes does not appear.Knowing my luck ,being to the shop it will be OK.
Wait till it will break?I wait 10 months allready!

See my post above yours.

Probing around with a dowel or mechanics stethoscope will help you to narrow down that sound to the noisy part with ease.

Good luck on it not being something really serious.

I've had a blast with my mechanics stethoscope. Listening to things like the valves, fuel injectors and even the oil flowing through the oil filter is really neat.

I'm betting on catcon heat shield. They're aluminum, with steel fasteners. Galvanic corrosion causes the aluminum to disintegrate first, so the shield rots around the bolts and flutters or falls off.

There is actually a cable that runs from the gearshift to the transmission. Maybe the linkage is loose at the transmission.
Does the noise happen when you are stopped? Coasting down a hill?
I warned you to stop terrorizing VW's.
