Subject: Best brand of oil?
IP: Logged

Message:
What brand/viscosity motor oil would you folks recommend for a 1999 5.2 liter?
Just trying to find out which brand seems to be performing the best for you other Dakota owners.
I USED to use Penzoil in my other cars, but would like to get away from it after seeing posts from folks that shy'd away from it.
My Dakota is due for its 11,000 mile oil change and whats in it now is what it had in it when I bought it (used) last May.
Im thinking about Mobil-1, or should I use a synthetic blend first?

thanks

use a semi-synthetic first, and at the oil change after that switch to a full synthetic. I personally use either Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 (whatever is cheaper when I go to buy oil)

I would have to say that Neo-Synthetic, Amsoil and Redline would have to be the best. Then you have all of the other Synthetics which are also excellent like Mobile1, Penzoil Synthetic, Havoline Synthetic, Exxon Synthetic...... I am partial to 15W50, 20W50, and 10W40 in synthetic weights. I will admitt that I am useing Mobile1 10W30 synthetic in my 4.7 liter right now. Once the warranty is up I will be useing a synthetic 10W40. The clearance on the 4.7 are awful close to the same as the other older engines. The only significant difference I could find was in tolerances not clearances. The most over looked device on your engine is the oil filter. You should consider useing hastings, baldwin,Purlator Pure One, Mobile one premium filters. If you chose to use a non-premium filter stay away from Fram,Mopar and Penzoil oil fiters. If cost is an issue then look at the AC/Delco filters. They are an excellent value and do a good job.

Stay with Synthetic! Personally I prefer Castrol 5w50 , but it's up to you.I've got a "93" Lebaron convertible that has had nothing but Castrol Syntech 5w50 in it since new (now has 102000 miles on it ) and absolutely no problems. Just make sure you use a good filter.I like the new Fram XG series, seems to hold oil pressure up even at idle. Plus it uses the new Triad type filter.
It does cost about $9 though. BUT again it's up to you.

Any of the oils mentioned so far are all great,I personnally use Valvoline semi-syn in 5w-30 and a K&N Gold filter. I was one of the group that used the "thicker weights" are better. But with the clearances in any of the new engines it is awfully tight. In my 4.7 I installed a 'real' oil pressure gauge and at start-up(cold) the oil pressure is 85psi. When I drive off easy it pegs it at 100psi+ . When it is fully warmed up,idle is 35psi,cruising at 55mph is 80psi and 'playing' it varies between 85 to 100psi. My friends wife drives a new Honda and it calls for 5w-20!

There is nothing at all wrong with Pennzoil. It's the best selling motor oil in the country and has been so for quite a while. Syntec is a decent oil but why pay almost $5.00 per quart for something that is basically high grade mineral oil? If you want to use a synthetic then use something that is a true synthetic.

I have actually seen a good increase in highway driving gas mileage.....an inprovement of about 1 mpg on basic highway and for long haul highway up to 2.2 mpg increase!!! i also used a basic purolater oil filter with each change. Something to add....

Demon-Xanth, All organic oil has parafin in it. If you change your oil ever 3000 or SOONER you will not see any sludge in your engine in non raceing aplications. Before I made the switch to synthetic oil I ran castrol GTX 20W50 and never had any sludge in any of my engines. When I was driveing on the autobahn I used to change it every 2000 miles. I was driveing an 86 toyota 4runner with a 4 cylinder at 105MPH an hour and a half each way. I put 80,000 miles on this truck with this combination. When I returned to the US I decided to blue print the engine and use it as a test mule for off road mods. When I tore the engine down it had no sludge anywhere, light coating of carbon so thin that a scotch bright pad and some solvent wiped it right off. The oil pan had a slight honey coloured varnish to it. The light varnish wiped off the pan with a shop towel. WhenI took it to the machine shop they asked me if this was a new block. THe cross hatching was perfect and all parts specked out as new. They ballanced my rotateing assembly includeding the High Compression pistons for me. They had ahard time beliveing that all I did was wipe the parts off with shop rags and gasoline. So even with organic oil and the horrable Fram PH8A filter if you stay ahead of oxidation then you can have excellent life expentacy from modern engines. Synthetic oils just make this process a little more idiot proof. If this level of protection is available with Dino juice then imagine how much better synthetics are. I went over to synthetics because I am fundementaly lazy and hate to have to do maintence more often. I also like to keep vechiles at least 10 years. Synthetics make this an easier task. Do not let anyone kid you if it is organic oil it has parifin in it as a viscosity improver.

The whole issue with Pennzoil was back a few years. TRhere was an issue with their additive package that led top some sludging. These days I would say there is insignificant difference between any given brand of oil for the same type (ex 10W-30 Dino)

It's not really parrifin as in wax but the oil is a parrifinic oil. You can extract and make parrifin wax from it.

I want to say again stay away from Fram, Quaker State and Penzoil oil filters. They are all made by Fram. Fram makes the worst oil filter that I am aware of. Even the best Fram is junk compared to most other brands. If you want a decent cheap filter then get an AC/Delco filter. They are alot better then Fram and are avalable at Walmart.

Yeah, The Pennzoil issue was back in the 70's. They had to pay money either in fines or a class action lawsuit or something. All I know is I used to use it back then because you could get it on sale for cheap. There was even an article in Consumers Reports about it but it was a long time ago. Switched to other brands after that. BTW, A long time ago many oils were parrifin based. These were the old "non-detergent" oils. We used to use them in old cars cause it would plug em up enough to reun okay.
Oh, another BTW, Pennzoil and Quaker State are now the same company and headquartered in Texas! Penn no more.

First, I've always used the cheapest Havoline non synthetic motor oil and Fram filters, and changed my oil every 3000 to 3200 miles and i've had 3 vehicles last over 20 years. I don't know why you all don't like Fram filters. I do know that organic oil does break down on the molecular level after about 3000 miles... That is why regular oil changes are so important.

Synthetics are way too expensive for me. I'd rather buy organic and change more often, but maybe i'm just a little old fashioned.

I will say, not that this has anything to do with a Dakota, but i use CAstrol Syntec in my Tractor and that is the smoothest running one i have and uses almost no oil.

As for the weight of oil, i would use what the book calls for in the first 50,000 to 80,000 miles, then after that, or when you notice the engine using more oil, switch to the next highest weight. Like start for 10W30 then eventually go to 10w40, especially in summer when oil is at its thinest. Actually in the winter, I still use 10W30, but the summer's heat can really thin the oil, so i use the 40 in the summer.

Have any of you uses K&N OIL filters? Just curious...

Donald I used fram most of my life. Then I started working with some of the people from AC/Delco. They showed me idependant study after study about the high failure rate of Fram filters. Then i spoke with the some GM product specialists about oil's and filters. Then I cam e across the mini-mopar oil filter study site. Al of them had but one thing to say. Fram Bad!!! I switched to AC/Delco which is alot better and cost less. When I bought my new truck I went with premium synthetic filter to match with the synthetic oil. I have been useing mobile one oil filter and can say that my oil is alot cleaner. I am going to try try AC/Delco UPF13 it is identical to the mobile one synthetic filter but it is $3 cheaper for me to buy.

I just installed a new fram "tough guard" filter. I guess i'll try another brand next time and see if there is any visable difference in the "dirtyness" of the oil. I have noticed that the oil does get "dirty" very quickly.

Since it's starting to get cold here, I put 10w30 oil in. It is supposed to protect better in winter. I would use synthetic but i would have to take a loan just to buy the oil.

Try Walmarts Synthetic. It is half the cost of the other brand. I have a friend that works at walmart stocking the shelfs. For the longest time walmart listed the refinery that botteled the oil for them. One day he noticed that it was the same refinery that bottled the Quaker State Synthetic. It stayed that way for about a year. Then he noticed that they quit puting the refinery that bottled their synthetic on the bottle. I am sure that they use the lowest bideing large refinery. Give it a try.

Ande, The best oil for your truck is the Lubrication Engineers (LE) #8130 10w-30. I've been in the oil industry for over 22 years and have seen and tested many oils over those years. I'm a Certified Lubrication Specialist by the STLE (Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers). I'm also a regular member of the STLE and have access to many other members and their testing of oils. The LE 8130 is the best! No other oil has the additive package that LE does. For instance they use a chemical called MONOLEC. This chemical does two things over and above the regular additives that are used in other oils. First it is an anti-wear additive and second it has a self regenerating anti-oxitant. I've seen tests that show less than 1/2 the wear of the great Mobil-1 and superior oxidation resistance.

As one guy that posted above said you can get it at Mag-hytec on the web or call them at 1-818-786-8325. They also have a great rear end cover that holds more oil and has two magnets (one on the dipstick and one on the drain plug). It has cooling fins and they say that it can cool as much as 50 deg F. over the stock cover when pulling or when you've got your foot in it or when you're driving fast fwy speeds. It's already plumbed for a temp guage.

I hope this info helps

Sincerely, Kevin

The Fram made me almost sick. The others seal so much better inside. The Fram pressure regulator has a poor sealing surface. I found other differences but that one was enough for me to take Frams off of my car, truck, and tractor that day.

Depending on your application I would have to say hands down it would have to be a toss up between Redline Oil and Amsoil. From what I have read the Redline Raceing Line of oil is the ultimate for a raceing vechile!! It appears that Amsoil has a slight edge in dail drivers. Their has been some debate about Redlines claim for extended drain intervals because of additive package problems.AMsoil on the otherhand has a 25 year history of extened drain intervals and supports a national oil testing program. Redlines base stock is definately the best their is.You should check out Amsoil and Redlines web sites!!! P.S. Redline makes a race oil that has very few additives and is not for street use and they make an SAE line of oils with an additive package for daily driveing.

I read where DAK2 uses 5w50 (and maybe some others do to). I prefer to stay away from oils with a wide spread. Some oils use modifiers that don't lubricate very well to get that spread. More modifiers means less lubrication. That is why auto companies don't like 10w40 but want you to use 10w30 instead I have heard. The weather conditions where you live/drive and the usage of the vehicle determine the proper range. For instance: If I raced a lot or pulled heavy loads, I would use 20w50. Since I live in the south (usually warm) and race seldomly, I use 10w30 Mobil one. If you are real particular about oils, you should look into the LE oils that were mentioned earlier. No FRAM, Pennzoil, or Quaker State filters will ever go on any of my vehicles.
