How long will gas stay "fresh" without stabilizers? Does it lose its octane with age or its burnability?

When I took small engines in High School, my shop teacher told me gas was only good for about a week, but I'm sure it can go at least a month before you need to start adding stabilizers into it.

Depends. Store it in a cool, dry, dark place in an air-tight container such as the corner of the garage in a fuel type container with a good lid, and it will probably last a month or so without degradation beyond usefullness.
Back in the day, gasoline used to last a whole lot longer, months even, without stabilizing additives, the powers that be must think no one needs to store gas...this way you can't risk-manage a price spike with a couple of gerry cans.

So you're saying that when I can make a tank last for a month on my QC the gas is no good when I finally burn it all? This doesn't sound right...

i've had gas in the tank of my Buick sitting in my drivweway for over a year and it will start and run without missing. no stabilizers added.

if anything i think they way gas is formulated these days it will probably store longer than say 20-30 yrs ago.

Since your driving it, it is mixing itself around, and it's a well sealed container of sorts, the degradation should not be noticable. If you run it right down, you're probably risking mixing condensate in, too. What I'm saying is more like it's not as good as when you pumped it by the end of that month, or so.
Anyone who has a bike knows what I mean. Let it sit for a few weeks with a half tank and if it starts and runs, you're lucky.

LOL. Good luck with that.
Gas companies want nothing more than to sell you more gas. There is no logical reason to make it last more than the shortest reasonable amount of time.

well gas has changed in the past 20-30 years
not becuase of the4 gas companies but federal mandates
which prolly dont really affect the stabilty any

Are you asking because you want to store your vehicle? If so, i'd be more concerned about the oil draining down and causing hard starting. metal on metal is not good. Also becareful of gaskets, seals, etc. they will dry out and become brittle.

Gas will start to lose ignition Quality after 3 months.(motorcycles and lawnmowers over winter) After 6 months you will be lucky get it to ignite in anything. After a year you will be lucky if it will burn in a brushfire and it will stink to high heaven(varnish). Use the fuel stab. any time you store a unit. It saves alot of trouble.

ever wonder how an ounce of this stuff (Sta-bil, etc)in 128 oz (less than 0.8% concentration) does ANYTHING?

if it really was that helpful, you'd think it would be put in in the refinery and all gas would be stabilized.. it would stave off all sorts of problems, warranty/damage claims etc

The Costco where I gas up sells 4 to 6 double tanker truck loads a day, around 10,000 gallons a load. The refinery sells it pretty much right after it is produced.
Others don't use as much as me, but I'd think it only lasts two weeks at most for the average bear. So, why would they need stabilizers?
I think you should spring for a bottle of the stuff as cheap insurance. Way cheaper than cleaning if you're wrong. Cause you never know what the crap the govermnent has put into the gas will do.

Your best bet would be to do some research on this from any motorcyclist/biker site. This is a real issue with carbed vehicles, and the bikes seem to exhibit old gas problems the worst.

From the research that I've seen, 3 months is about as far as you'd want to push it. I suspect that a fuel-injected motor could handle older gas a bit better then carbed, since once the float bowls and jets gum up from it varnishing, you're toast.

The rule of thumb I learned when I was rebuilding motors, was that you
lose 1 octane per month. Having left a 1/2 tank of 87 in my impala,
fired it up 16 months later, ran like crap - threw several codes at me.
After filling it up at the local chevron, it got better several miles
later. Reset codes, & no problems since. YMMV.

On our farm we have a bulk tank that holds regular gas, which we fill up about once a year. It gets run in my parents 99 Caravan with no problems at all. Maybe our Canadian gas is better than American, just like our beer....hehe

I agree with trevor, our gas up here must be better, just like our beer! i took out our roto-tiller and started it after 3 years of sitting, now mind you i had added the stablizer like 2 months after the gas had been put in it.

Who cares where they are manufactured. Some Chrysler cars are manufactured in Ontario. Even some of the full size Rams (the SRT-10 and the 5.7 Hemi) are built in Mexico.

Actually I dodn't buy my truck from the U.S., it came from a private sale here in Canada. There is such a thing as DaimlerChrysler Canada.

PS. Please, Canada has an uppercase letter at the beginning.
