Subject: Front Rotors Warped @ 12K on 04 QC AWD
IP: Logged

Message:
Took the Dakota in for an oil change today and
reported brake vibrations for last 200 miles as
well squeel from right rear brake for last 1500
miles.

Dealer cleaned all rotors and calipers as well as
turning front rotors at their cost based on the
front rotors being warped.

I am surprised at the early warping, even my
track car can not destroy rotors that quickly.

What do you guys recommend? Should they be ok
after turning? Should I push for replacement by
Dodge or is it better to cut my losses and move
on to aftermarket?

I have about 20K on my 03 and all four rotors are shot. Anyone know where I can get quality rotors and pads? I had Brembo's on my Mustang and they took a lot of abuse without any problems.

I ahev 70K on my '01 QC. Front rotors are still well within specs.

Read this: http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm

The *only* way to tell if a rotor is warped is to put a dial indicater on it; the old school feel it with your foot deal just doesn't work any more. If you didn't do that, then they may have been perfectly straight. The dealer just cuts them because it's easier than arguing with you.

doncha want to find out what warped them? did the dealer tell you what warped em? too long in the sun caused it or what?

if your finger falls off and the doc puts it back on, doncha usually ask what caused teh finger to fall off?

noone ever says in these warped rotor posts what caused the warping in their particular case.
tell us!!

personally, i wouldn't take my truck back from the dealer unless they could fix whatever warped the rotors first. rotors dont just warp themselves.

I guess I'm lucky so far. 30K and no warping yet.
Some of them miles even towing.

Sounds like I need to check for pad wear (Squeelers).

I did however hate the rear disk drone when backing up. I've had to pull my wheels and calipers in the rear to touch them with the dremel and some fine grit paper to remove the glaze. This stops the dreaden drone for a while.

I bought my 2002 dakota with just about 40k miles on it
and i put about 500 miles on it and the right brake caliper locked up on me
and it caused the rotor to warp
seems as tho that is a problem with these trucks
that the front end isnt made of the greatest parts.
I dont know
had the caliper replaced and both front rotors shaved and no problems yet
but i dont drive it much anyway
ive only put about 3k miles on it since i bought it in april
i got my escort for commuting and the truck for a toy

I have a 2000 dakota 4.7 4x4
My rotors were shot early(like maybe 15,000). My brakes faded a couple times and I ended up asking a different dealer around 20,000 miles and the brake guy told me to get new rotors. The Dodge and Ford rotors are junk.
North East snow/salt eats lots of things but when I took them off there were spots as big as quarters that fell off in flakes!
NAPA rotors and pads and now I have 87,000 on the same rotors. My only problem with the brakes seems to be mine only. When it's cold out over night , first drive in the morning the front discs fail and the rears lock up until I've hit the brakes a few times. Bled everything numerous times and a dealer now in Charlotte actually paid for the ABS unit ($2000) after I showed them my paperwork that previous dealer didn't do anything. They pressure bled too.
Still have the same problem though. No one has an answer. Acts like something mechanical is failing, when I hit the brakes something under the hood bangs and the pedal sinks and the rears lock up. Only thing left to replace is the master cylinder and proportioning valve. Totally lost on it. I want a schematic now to look at. Funny thing though, my Dad has a 2001 and his does the same thing and he only has 6000 miles on his!

Warped rotors are very common on genIII Dakotas.
Mine went after my first panic stop from highway speeds. Around 12000 mi.
Replaced with Raybestos and have had no problems since. About 55,000 mi.
I've heard the stock rotors are the same as those on the Caravan.Could be B.S. though.
Either way, why replace crappy Mopar rotors with new crappy Mopar rotors.
Next to go will be the sway bar bushings , ball joints or power windows if your truck keeps up with the average.
After that you will have a reliable truck on your hands...from my experience.

My 01 4WD Quad gets about 16K between turning and replacing rotors. And, in response to the last post, I just spent $400 to replace the window motor on the driver's side. The recall covered my upper ball joints (of course they charged me for the alignment afterward). Maybe I'll get rid of it before the sway bar bushings go.

D-C cut costs by using OEM cheap metal for their rotors (from a D-C mechanic). If they've got them for your year/model, take a look at Raybestos PG-Plus rotors and pads. Reasonably priced, works great and durable. I bracket race with my 4x2 Dak and have had to hit and hold the brakes hard from 100 mph many times. Slowed me down without a wiggle or lock up :-) Off the strip, they are quiet, pads give off little dust and rotors have shown no wear.

I have a 97 cc, 3.9 and my rotors need replacing too. I've heard that the lugs get torqued down to tight at most shops, so it's always good to take a torque wrench to them after you get it back from the shop. I'm going through O'Rielly's though whenever I get them. They have a lifetime warranty. They might not last longer but atleast I'll be able to get another pair if they warp.

The stock rotors are poor quality from the factory. The Autozone replacement is better. Many have just used those and reported no problems.

I just replaced my stock rotors and pads on my 2000, they had a little over 65k miles on them and the rotors had started vibrating about 1k miles earlier.

I had always been told that one of the reasons for the Dodge rotors going so fast were the stock pads being hard on them.

I ended up replacing with Raybestos and so far so good.

I got 161,000 miles out of my original rotors. They were fine when I took them off I just felt that they were wearing thin. I never had any warping. I replaced them with "street Heat" rotors from Pep boys. I found out later that I could get Brembo rotors from "Tirerack" a little cheaper. I have always used Raybestos premium pads.

I just replaced the front pads and rotors on my 99 about 500 miles ago. Although I used Raybestos rotors (not the cheap ones) and ceramic pads, I still have this squal from he@@ form the left side.

I have tried the grease thing on the back of the pads to no avail. I can not seam to get this thing to stop screaming when I tap the breaks. Everything else though is good for now (no shaking).

And you paid them for the alignment???? The alignment is covered under the warranty for the ball joints. You wouldn't need the alignment if they didn't have to replace the ball joints. Go get your money back. Had my ball joints replaced last month and even though the alignment was outsourced, I wasn't charged. You need to change dealers if that is the way they treat you.

Squealing in the brakes is generally caused by the pad vibrating in the caliper. That's why you use grease or anti-squeal gunk on the back of the pads. But you knew that.

The only advantage to using ceramic pads is that they don't make an audible squeal when they vibrate. The frequency is too high for humans to hear.

With those two points in mind, you need to look elsewhere for your noise.

My brakes are squeeling like stuck pigs right after I hit 21,000 miles. 500 more miles I'm starting to feel pulsations in the front.
Since I've gone through this with my previous Dak I'm replacing all 4 rotors with Power Slots and upgrading to ceramic pads.
I buy the parts dealer installs under warranty replacement :-)
