Subject: Car & Driver rates Dak 2nd to Colorado!?
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently saw an episode of Car and Driver Television in which they tested the new Tacoma, new Frontier, new Ridgeline, new Colorado and new Dakota. It seems the V8 Dakota was the second SLOWEST after the Chevy Colorado!

In a test group full of v6 trucks, the v8 Dakota only managed to outrun the 5 cylinder!?!? That's pathetic!

the v8 dakota has alot more potential for mods than the others.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Didn't the ridgeline win? HAHAHAHAHAHA. I saw one of those driving down the road the other day, i was not impressed.

One cool thing I learned was that the toyota has an option long bed on the quad cab. I hope dodge follows.

What I love about the Ridgeline comparo's is that so far all the camparisons I've seen are to small/mid sized trucks. Not full sized as it's advertised to be.

Even the trade rags see where it doesn't fit.

Trucks are designed for towing and hauling, not drag racing. By the way, how did the Colorado do in the towing part of this truck evaluation?

I'd like to see the mentioned trucks tested doing what trucks are made for - hauling and towing.

I'd bet my 02 4.7 Dak with 3.92's will out pull any of them. I'd like to see any of those V6's pull my heavy ass old camper through the mountains of PA in the summer like my V-8 dak.

I've heard you need to rev the hell out of that Honda to make any power with it, kinda like a civic...lol.

That and I bet the so called testers never thought of other real world aspects of the Ridgeline, like that stupid compartment built into the bed floor. Yeah that'd really be cool the first time you leave your jumper cables in there in the winter only to have the door freeze shut. Not to mention dirt getting in around the door when you haul something.

Those auto rags usally drool over stupid things like cup holders and compartments. I'm sure it will get "truck of the year" also.

'Course it'd probably make my wife a good "truck".

Did anyone realize you have to unload the Ridgeline's pickup bed to open the compartment in the bed floor? Not a lot of fun if you haul heavy equipment.

it's car and driver, do you actually think any of those pansies know how to drive? besides, the dakota would drag the rest around by the bumper all day long. not to mention those kinds of magazines are biased towards creature comforts. yep, it's starting to look sad for all trucks nowadays, compare a new one with one from the 70's through the mid 90's and you'll see they make em more and more suited for blending in with newer cars and suv's, and nowhere near as tough as they used to be.

Most people don't have trailers/payloads that run away from them.

Well of course the new Dakotas sucks!! This is DC's way of making are once loved Dakotas in the so called mainstream. And before you know it then next modle will be a unibody like that of the Ridgeline.

I have to say, if I was in the market for another midsized trucks then it would have to be a Toyota Tacoma. I'm very impressed with the power out put of there new 4 litre and off-road performance.

Uh, Joe C., I happened to be out on my yearly forestry road romp today. There was a section of road, probably 4 feet long by about 12 feet wide that was partially washed out by a downpour we had Thursday.
There was a guy in a brand new Taco just sitting on the other side of this sorta washout.
I stopped, grabbed a 5 ft tree branch from the roadside, walked over, measured the depth, maybe 14 inches, tossed the branch aside and walked back to my Dak and got in.
I waited to see what the Taco dude was gonna do when he backed up and motioned me forward.
I thought, great nice guy hope he backs up a full 10 feet 'cause I ain't brakin'...
I stuck my Dak in 4 Lo and breezed through at a lowly 3 mph.
I get stopped and I see a Cat D-9 parked up the hill about 100 ft.
The Taco dude comes over and says, damn good you got through I got stuck and had to go get a pull from up the road....
There's nothing special about my '04 Quad it's comletely stock with no special development pieces on it like his Taco.
You may be impressed with Taco's now but after my experiences with towing them out of ditches and snowbanks around here it's the LAST truck I'd buy.
They aren't even on my test drive list when I consider a truck.

It seems to me that one of the major purposes of this website is to make our trucks faster. Towing and hauling are a couple of our primary concerns but there are vehicles much more capable in that department.
Seems that people are drawn to the smaller trucks (especially the 4x4s) to have a sporty vehicle that can do some light hauling, a some off-roading.
The new Dakota has lost its sporty appearance, apparently the performance is below average, lowest ground clearance, and not to mention, two of its competitors have optional rear lockers!
I'll stick with my '02 for now.

If I wanted to go fast I wouldn't have bought a truck.

The primary purpose of this site is to share common experiences with our trucks and to avoid giving the stealership more money than we have to.

Going fast in a truck is just dumb. I have a locker in my Dak. BFD. It's not worth paying $1800-2000 in option pricing.
