The reason I picked on it is because of them BIG POSTERS all over town from Honda saying "the truck, reinvented".

And a few months ago some honda lover came in here all "watch out. honda's making a TRUCK. It will be better than yours..." etc etc etc.
So I see them now and looked into them.

It just makes me laugh.

They should have said "the Suburu Brat, reinvented." or "The El Camino, reinvented"!!!

I loaded 25+ bags of 80Lb concrete in the back of my Dak without thinking once. I got it home ok.

If I did that to a Ridgeline (that's just one palette) it would brake the rear half OFF of it's uni body design!

Just don't call it a TRUCK.

BTW, I think Avelanche's are not a truck either.

You say why buy a Dak when you can buy a full sized?
Well I bought mine because it just fit in my garage where a RAM was barely too big. And like someone said... At least they put a 1/2 ton REAL TRUCK suspension UNDER a Dakota. It's just slightly smaller and performs a little better on the road (unloaded). But unlike the S10/Colorado/Ranger/tacoma mid sized trucks, we can get away with REAL TRUCK duties when we need to. i.e. towing something fairly large over and through the mountains. Not just across the city.

I took a look at a few Ridgelines at the Fargo Dodge/Honda dealer today (weird combo eh?) It seems more an SUV than a pickup. It was after closing time so I didn't get to check under the hood or sit inside, but the interior looked comfortable, about as roomy as a full-size crew cab. I think the extra few inches of width over a Dak is helping them there. The transverse engine/tranny layout scares me a bit. From underneath it looked like standard issue large FWD car stuff with an extension housing out the back end for the rear driveshaft. The "trunk lid" looked like about half the box floor so don't stick anything in there you can't afford to lose access to when hauling anything. Overall it's an interesting vehicle and I'm sure there are plenty of people for whom this thing would work just fine. They can have it, I'll keep my Dakota.

well I got my dak not because I couldnt affored a full size truck. they had a ram QC 4x4 right next to mine for the same price. but becuase I didnt need nothign that big. after all my wife would have a time getting in the truck and trying to put my 17M old kid in the car seat would be pure murder. not to mention its huge. the dak suted all my needs and havent had a problem hauling anything I wanted to haul. its a good all around truck. as far as the ridgeline. honda may make nice handling cars but they never made a supension for heavy hauling or towing. sorry to say I think the ridgeline will fall short for a few years and the ricer kids will be getting them because they are hondas. if I had a choice between a bedliner and a dak. I will still take the dak.

Let's look at #'s alone for the ridgeline

06 ridgeline RTS (V6)
curb weight 4498
towing capacity 5000
payload capacity 1558
EPA 16/21
hp @ RPM (SAE NET) 255 @ 5750(max rpm 6300)
torque 252 @ 4500
displacement (ltrs/cc) 3.5/3471

#'s from http://www.4x4review.com/vehicles/honda/06-Ridgeline-specs.asp

So these are the specs of a "real truck"??? My 95 CC V6 can tow/haul that! So how is this the truck re-invented?? :D

Man, are you guys insecure or what.? I check out six different car/truck sites on a regular basis and I have never seen anything like this place.
What is the hangup.? It is just another vehicle on the market, I don't see them attacking the Dakota with their advertising.

Honda and Toyota are going to do well against the new style Dakota. Most people I talk to, just do not like the new Dakota style. Japan products are excellent for resale, dependability. They are not heavy work trucks, but face it 90% of us drive around with our empty dakotas, on city streets. So until they re-style the Dakota, I will be looking at Honda,Toyota.

Brad: That's funny, most people I've talked to about the 05 or who have seen my pickup like it just fine, including 3rd-gen owners! Pretty much all the anti sentiment I've seen is online (and mostly right here.)

Re the "real truck" thing: here's max towing capacities from brochures and makers' websites. I made it as fair as possible to the Ridgeline by just going with crew cab type, 4x4 trucks with automatics, but allowed optional engines to try to even up available horsepower as much as possible.

GM Colorado/Canyon: 4000 - all I-5 automatics
Dakota: 6850 - 05 QC 4x4, presumably V8 automatic with 3.92's (equally equipped 4x4 club cab: 6950, best is 4x2 club with 7150)
Explorer Sport Trac: 5080 - 4x4
(Honda Ridgeline: 5000)
Nissan Frontier: 6100 - V6 4x4 Crew Cab
Tacoma: 6500 - Double Cab V6 4x4

Or how about payload:
GM: 1338 - Z85 4x4 crew cab Colorado (I-4?) (1190 Z71)
Dakota: 1460 - QC 4x4, may be V6? (1560 for CC 4x4)
Explorer Sport Trac: 1480
(Honda Ridgeline: 1558)
Frontier: 1495 - as above
Tacoma: 1485 - as above

Does the Ridgeline look so bad now if you ignore the oversize cute-ute layout and just look at numbers? It's actually pretty well in the hunt!

Actually I have been seeing new 05 Dakota's driving around on a daily basis now. They are selling, but probably not as well to some of us who have a relatively new Gen III who haven't got used to the changes in looks to our beloved trucks.

It seems that they are selling fine.
I'll keep mine and modify it to my liking and some day have this thing paid off so mods will come more often :-)

As for the ridgeline, I don't think it's a truck. So I guess it shouldn't even be compared to a truck. It's a SUV if anything. It will be fine for the soccer moms who don't want an Odyssey. As for towing on a REGULAR basis (which I do!) I think I'll stick to a truck, and a truck with a V8 that can grunt thank you.

Actually, my 03 RC dak has a payload of 1850#. Non of the others are close. Alot of the full size 1500's aren't that high either. The heavy duty package actually gets you something on the Dak. I haul 12 to 1500# of feed weekly. I couldn't do that with any of the other mid size trucks without overloading. The Ridgeline will make a nice little town truck/SUV. Just another city toy.

By the way, I replaced a 92 Silverado 1500 4x4 5.7 HD 5spd with my Dak. The Dak tows better and has alot higher payload.
