'01 Dak QC here. After reading through these posts, I found similar probs to the one I have. Left turn signal does a quicktime, everything else works fine. This seems to be an intermittent problem too. Would a faulty relay be the culprit? Those of you who've had the same problem, what was your final solution?

Thanks for the help...

Hey Dodgeman...

I just fixed my truck yesterday, Finally decieded to just go to a scrap yard and pick up a new parking light socket, since you cannot find them anywhere new...I popped the old one out, new one in, and sure enough it worked...No wire cutting or anything...I hope this helps you

PS...if you get a new socket, make sure u have it exactly like the other one...i had to pull the top part off the old one and fit it into the one i got because it was missing...good luck!

There is a lot of misinformation about this relatively simple problem. Enough that I disasembled my steering column unecesarily. You could spend a lot of money on this, but the actual fix should be only $5.99 under many circumstances:

If your issue on the '02 Dakota is that when you turn l or r you get the emergency flashers coming on in error, this is due to a sticky relay in the flasher command module under the dash. This unit is NOT in the steering wheel turn signal unit as some insisted, that's why many here complain that they replace that unit and the problem persists.

The module in question is also NOT in the fuse box. I don't know why someones above insists that it is. It is however, fairly near the fuse box, nested under the dash and attached to a thick harness. It is easy to ID this module because with the r or l turn signal going, you will hear and feel the clicking it makes.

Disconnect this unit from the harness. Open the unit by gently peeling back the tabs. Check that all the relays spring back equally. There are three metal relays...they all must spring back to the open position. On mine, one was sticky so I GENTLY manipulated it at the same time as cleaning it with electrical cleaner from Autozone ( spray can ). Spray the heck out of it leaving a thin film of lubricant.
Replace.

If you can't get the relays all working, buy a new module. However, I was able to free mine up.

Savings: Up to $150 or more for uneeded parts.

If this helps anyone please respond to this post.

Good luck, Mike

I want to join into the discussion. My left turn signal works but the right turn signal and flashers don't work. I pulled the flasher module and I could see where it had shorted out. Bought a new one for an easy $85 and plugged it in, expecting everything to be fine. Nothing changed... still have left turn signal but no right turn signal or flashers. Any hints?

Hey guys, I just came back home from a hell of a night so excuse me if my text might be hard to understand. Here is what happened tonight, I went to my friend's house to move an old 240sx s13 we just sold out but we needed to deliver the car 2 hours away. Short story, everything was fine untill we connect the trailer lights. When we connected the trailer lights and the fuse for the cluster (and day light I think) burned right away. We change the fuse for an other 20amp just like the one that was there and it burned again right when we connected it again.

After cheking the trailer's connector on my truck we decided to cut it and use some butt connector I had for this right gauge of wire. It's minus 30 celcius outside and I skinning wires and put the crimp connector one by one. Connect them one by one and it worked ! (Well this is what I was thinking) Stop light, both flasher, day light and the 4 flashers. So we moved the trailer near the garage to put the car on it and we let the truck on the 4 flasher or hazzard light for like 15 to 20 minutes since it was blocking one way of the street. Just the time to strap the car on the trailer for the trip. After the car straped, one of my friends told me: Hey your flasher are fu***ng slow on your truck !? So I stated my truck and the flasher came back to normal speed. I moved it away from the street and parked it ready to leave ...

This is where it all started: My friend enter in the passenger side and I told him: Man don't you smell it, it's like plastic burning !!!??? So I looked around get out of the truck, check the wires for the trailer and one of the wires "The big green one" out of 4 was hot and burning the shrink and tape on it ! Then I saw smoke coming out of the driver window, so I disconnected the trailer' connector ASAP and run near the dash. A lot of smoke was coming out of the cluster then I heard a loud "WOUSHH" and saw a small fire-ball on the engine harness near the fuse box so I put my hand right on the harness stop the fire ! The crazyest thing is that it worked I actually stopped the fire with my hand ! Grabed some snow in the street because now I'm burn and I have cut my hand by slidind it too fast behing the dash ...

The place I've seen fire is like on our car, just like after the sub fuse box before it became one big harness in some loom.

Now the truck still start but the left flasher is not working anymore and the hazzar one either ... I think it might be the flasher relay that have burned or stick at on position ? If one of the wire for the trailer would have been mix up I don't think all the lights would have worked when we tested them ? If you have on idea please feel free to post it !

Truck is a Dodge Dakota 2001 V8 4.7L that has been in a crash in the past, maybe it could be a short in my truck on on the trailer ?

My turn signals didn't work on either side, inside indicators didn't blink. I would get one click out of the relay. The emergency flashers worked just fine. Pulled the relay and opened it up, moved the switch back and forth a few times, reconnected the relay, and now the turn signals work fine. 2000 Dakota SLT Quad Cab 4x4 Auto.

2000 Dakota SLT 4X4. Turn signal/emergency signals flash fine for about 15 flashes when it is cold outside. If it is warm, they may flash once and then stay on until turned off. When they don't flash, the outside lights and instrument panel lights stay on. Also, can't find the relay around the fuses or steering column even when removing the panel under the steering column. Any suggestions?

I don't have a reply; just a question. Actually my problem is very like many posts here. however, the issues began with the headlight switch-which I replaced-twice! Finally, I had a friend istall a toggle switch to turn headlights on and off; I still have to pull out the knob for use of parking, brake, etc. lights. He discovered that the piece of copper in the dimmer-knob part was VERY warped and burnt, so I just don't use the dimmer.

Recently, now, my turn signals only make a click and never come on-inside and out of truck. I bought the truck--95 v8 2.5litre quad-cab--used 2 years+ ago, and I had to be careful how 'gently' I hit the lever for turning because my wipers would come on. That problem went away by itself long ago. Now I fear THAT is where my turn signal problem lies.

P.S. I have not yet checked my relays or anything, (like if I even have any other lights out), but I will do before work today.

Thanx for letting me share and I will always consider suggestions.

Well I just replaced my relay on my 2000 Dakota.
The thing I found confusing was where the hell was this thing.
Its not just left of the steering column and tada its there...its more like left of the steering column up against the west wall. You might be able to take it out {original relay is light green}, but putting it back in is a different story. It is way to cramped to achieve this. My suggestion is to pull back or unclip the plastic molding west wall that is just above yor floor and runs flush with your door-opening. There you will see a bolt thats holds a brace that interferes with you getting your hand in there to insert the relay.
Take that bolt out, swing that brace towards yourself. Its still a fight but you should now have enough room to get that friggin' relay in already.

All the best.

My issues on my 94 Dakota are the hazard & turn signals turn the wipers on. This has happened before & I moved the tilt up & down & it was fine. Now it is back again. Now the dash lights are out & the blue high beam indicator on the dash is on when the low beam head lights are on. When high beams are on blue indicator is off. This truck had a bad seal on the windshield & when ever it rained it poured inside the truck, flooding the floor. I think too much moisture got into many of the electronics.
