scott, is it a 04 or 05? I have a 02 4x4 with the
4.7 V8 and auto. I test drove a 04 3.7 V6 stick
and was impressed with the power it had over a
3.9 V6 I had in a 90 Dakota.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the new truck. Read
the different posts and you'll learn the faults
of the Dakotas. Like all of the big three, they
all have their problems. This site makes it
easier to fix them yourself.

thanks guys. i came from a 2000 frontier that gave me 95k miles of trouble free service, i hope the dodge is up to the same task. and by the wat it is v-6, with auto, 4x4, alum rims, extended cab with bucked seats and power convienece package. it is an 04, to be honest the styling of the 05 turned me off. i am not yet sure of my rear axle ratio as i wont take delivery till friday, but i will let yall know then what it is. what are some of the consistent problems with these trucks? once i know what words to search for i can read all the previously posted information. thanks guys for the welcome, i look foward to learning alot about my baby.

your gear is probably 3.55 unless you got the towing pack, then it would be 3.92. The 5 speeds (like mine which is a base truck) came with 3.31 or 3.55's)

hey guys i am a starting to get a little worried. i have been searching these forums and see post about changing timing chains at 80k and ball joint failure before 36k. are these flukes or something that will probably happen to me. overall how reliable is this truck and at what intervals should i perform maintnece. and i know RTFM but i dont even have the manual yet and i dont know what can be put off a bit or what needs to be done sooner to prevent wear. a general rundown would be fine. i was hoping for a vehicle that can go 100k with just fluid changes, belts, breaks and tires. am i SOL?

No need to freak - just because you see a problem here doesn't mean most have it. All brands have all kinds of problems; and all are known to have a few common problems. I wouldn't worry about the timing chain on your new style 6. Many of the older motors have gone well over 100,000 on original timing chains. Ball joints are one problem Mopars are known for, but it seems to be hit or miss. My 5 year old ball joints just passed safety inspection yesterday and they're probably abused almost as much as anybody's - pot holed New England roads, extra stress from a 2" torsion bar lift and sometimes carrying the extra weight of a regular duty plow. Relax, your new truck is about as rugged as anything else out there and I'd say better than the other domestic brands.

Are the v6 now mated to the 5 speed auto are only optional with the 45REF?

I've yet to test drive a new V6 Dakota with the 225 under the hood; but I'm thinking about the Dodge Magnum. Form what I here it like the American Muscle car came back. To bad Chrysler sold themself out uh?

I'm getting 16.5 Avg with my 318 powerd Dakota. What do you get with the new v6?

ok i got it!! what a sweet ride, well worth the wait. i actually did get the tow package along with the 4x4 so i have 3.92 gears. the 3.7 still provides great pulling power even with the auto i am very pleased with its get up and go. also it has a very commanding view of the road, i swear i am as tall as some fullsize trucks. now i just need to get it dirty. thanks again for everyones help and replies

yeah i actually pulled those numbers off the inside of my glovebox. they have a sticker that list all the specs. it sure feels like it too, lots of low end grunt and torque. i guess the sticker could be wrong, but it says 3.92

Did you get LSD (limited slip) rear end too? i have 3:55 LSD. its cool to be able to leave 2 BLACK marks when I mash it!
It's scary in the rain sometimes though. if your not careful, the rear end will get away from you in a hurry. winter should be fun though! I can just pop her into 4HI and drive :-P

Anyways, enjoy your new dak! I havent rode in a 3.7 daota, but I have rode in a liberty. that lil v6 can cook pretty good :-)

Keep Truckin!

so the 3.7 is actually the same as in the liberty?
They gave me a liberty while i was waiting for my dak and that thing really did have some get up and go. it was def geared higher in that lib tho, mine doesnt move near as fast but you can really feel it pulling. and i tend to think my diff is open, as i havent seen anywhere about it having a lsd. where would be the best place to look for that info?

Would probably be on the same sticker that lists your gear ratio. You most likely do have 3.92 gears, but will probably find them listed seperately on the window sticker from the tow package. What I think is wrong is for people to assume the tow package includes 3.92 gears.
