Subject: Anyone tried lower than 3:55 in a Dak?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just curious if anyone has lowered their rear ratio. I now have a full size for heavy work, and the wife is keeping the QC, so I was considering trying a much lower rear gear to improve economy and powertrain life.

Has anyone put anything in the realm of 3:20's in their truck?

The highest available road gears for the Corporate Rear is 3.23's. They would probly get you some good fuel milage highway, but city would suck real bad. If I was you and trying to get better fuel milage, then go Lower like 3.92's. I get excelent fuel milage with the lower gears 'cause the truck doesn't have to strain itself to get started. I generally take off in second gear with my tire set up. It is equal to 4.13's very low gear(295/50-16's = 27.4" tall compared to 255/65-16's Stock 29.1" tall). I get 17.5 sometimes 18 City and 23+ Highway Cruise set on 84 mph.

You have to remember that a swap will cost you money too.
Let's say you see a 4 mpg improvement (that's hoping).
Now you're getting , at 20 mpg, a 20% improvement.
Estimate a $40.00 / fill and you save $8.00 every 300 miles (the range/tank)
Now say you drive 20,000 mi/year. That's about 65 tanks a year or a $520.00 savings.
(real world savings are probably a lot less)
A swap will cost you in the range of , I'm guessing, 3 to 4 years of driving savings.
You could figure out exact costs and mileage savings and miles per year etc......but this gives you an idea of how little the difference actually is when hunting for better mileage in a give vehicle.

my Dak came stock with 3.21's with my 5 speed. I get phenomenal mileage and can still squawk the tires going into 2nd (sometimes chirp into 3rd). I have a 98 3.9l 2wd standar cab, short box. I was actually thinking of going to 3.93's just to shred more rubber.

Yeah I know what you mean, I get side ways going into 2nd if I have it mashed hard, and it lays 2 each 5 foot or better marks banging 3rd. That is with the 295/50-16 BFGs (10.5" wide on the ground) I have on it now. If I had those tires you have on the '98 I would turn around and go the other way when I hit 3rd, I'de hate to think what would happen in 2nd. And mine is a Club Cab with power everything 4.7L 5 Speed.

Nope No BullSh!t at all. My wife is sitting here and seen your Post No Way, and just started laughing at you. Ha Ha!. When she drives it she sets the cruise at 70 to 73 and gets 25 mpg steady. First time she used it to take a road trip she was simply amazed. And the final ratio with the 295/50-16s is 4.13s by the way with that fuel milage. Now I have a 5% variance in speedo to actual milage so I subtract 5% off my total milage from the odometer before I do my Calculations. Or it would be better than that, but not the whole truth. I bet you would even say that I'm lying that I get 17.5 to 18.25 in the City, but I'm not. But then again I don't really care if you believe me, consider the source. Mr. No Name Frady Cat.

why cant we all just get along? On my Dak I average about 27 mpg in the city, with the 5 speed and the 3.21 gears. I am not a wild driver, and it shows on the mileage. On the highway, doing about 55 - 60 mph I can approach 30. My wife's Hondont doesnt even come close!. My Dak is a 3.9l shortbox, standard cab, no air (this summer has been pretty cold in my area so the air isnt a problem).
Of course I will gladly give up a wee bit to get some more punch off the line.

You must be right, you even have the wife to back you up. HA HA! This gets even better now it is a 4.13 with tire size factored, you must be subtracting 5% of the gas you add also. But then again from your other post you must have one of the Special 4.7's.
BTY, I wish my wife was home so we could both have a good laugh.

Nothing real special just some bolt ons here and there. I'm sorry that you have to slam me even though it is the truth, but at least you are giving some other bloke a break for a while. It doesn't bother me at all.

Old Fool, your tires are 295/50-16: is that front and rear? and if on the front like that, is there a clearance problem (rubbing etc?)

greydak,

when you measured your gas mileage, did you measure it by adding how much you filled in the tank by how many miles you got from a full tank or did you look at your gas gauge and your odometer?

i thought i remember somewhere you saying you did that... which would not be anywhere near the correct way to do that.

My bone stock.. nothing added .. durango gets 20 mpg on the highway with the 5.2. Now it will hit 175 mile in the first 1/4 tank. It has a 25 gallon tank so by that method, i would be getting 28 mpg on the highway.

I am just saying i do believe 27 mpg AVERAGE is not likely. The best i got with my V6 was 20 city and 26-27 highway... but i had a lot of stuff done to it to get good mileage.

Old Fool,
23-24 mpg wouldnt seem that hard to me to get in a V8 on the highway... but i am just wondering if you are taking in consideration that you have smaller diameter tires than stock and your odometer says you are traveling further than you really are?

now looking to start an arguement fellers.. just trying to figure out your methods.

watch this:

Intense, you are probably right, and the method I am using isnt very scientific - mostly seat of the pants stuff. I do know that I am getting some pretty good mileage, but its probably closer to what you are saying. No big deal though, I am still very happy with what I got.

Now, see everybody, it is possible to be nice on this board.

Of course, I am never happy with the performance as some of you will no doubt agree with me. I will sacrifice mileage for the next mod on the truck - I havnt given up on an engine swap - a 400 b block would be soo nice, screw the mileage....HA!
