I am a sad owner of a 2000 Dakota. At 56,000 miles the problems hit. First my evaporator core went out at the cost of almost $800.00. Within 2 weeks the fuel pump went out at the cost of $775.00. Just today the keyless entry is getting ready to go. When I press the unlock button the relay/motor grinds. I contacted Customer Service through their web page and their response was " well sorry for your bad luck but we have made great advances in our quality. Can't prove it by me. This is my first and last Dodge truck.....

I can't believe some of the whining pussies on this board.

Do you think Dodge, or any company, should maintain your sh!t forever and you should expect that it will never break down.

Shut up and grow a pair FFS.

As long as we keep buying the JUNK Detroit
keeps building, it will not get any better. All
the makers are screwing us big time!

There is only one way to fix the problem.
STOP BUYING ANYTHING! Keep your old ones for a
few more years and I'm 100% sure Detroit will get
the message.

Dude, when a car has 50-60K moiles on it it should not have the problems that its having. My truck had some problems also. the latest being a so called need of a 1700$ wiring harness. I said F that. Looked at it myself found the problem bought the 125$ in parts ( one O2 sensor and a Power steering pressure switch) and fixed it myself. My truck is paid off. Im basically gonna run it into the ground as far as mileage goes then give it away when Im done with it. my old GMC had no problems until 130 000 miles ( but it was trouble free so I expected soem things to give up) When I had my truck at the dealer they said the same thing. Weve made great progress in our quality. I thought well back when you made my truck your Quality control guy was sleeping
I dont think the guy is whining. hes just pissed for spending a ton of $$ on a still fairly new truck.
I guess you never bitched when your truck broke down and it had to be repaired and it cost you a ton of $$.

Wow, what an interesting array of opinions.
Let me add my $.02 worth. I work in a manufacturing environement. There's an old saying
that you have to build quality into a product. You dont test for quality after the product is built. You only test to screen out the failures
so they dont reach the customer.

good design trumps a good warranty or great customer service every time. What do I mean by that? Well, it I buy a crappy product, and it is covered by a warranty, I return it, and a smiling
helpful person takes care of my problem on the first visit. I have solved my problem, so am I happy? Sort of. I would rather buy a product that is designed right, most likely will never fail, and who cares if the warranty coverage is
minimal. I hate breakdowns.

So, all the banter about the poor quality ball joints, junk rotors, surging idle problems, etc
all point back to the DC corporate philosophy that
it is easier/cheaper to deal with the customers who return to the dealer and complain about myraid
problems than to do the 'right thing' and design
quality into the vehicle. Choose a robust rotor,
a greasable ball joint, and test your engine software for a million miles instead of using
a magazine tester style "coast-to-coast" shakedown
cruise during Xmas holidays. Someone else in this
post said it best. Detroit doesnt care and they dont care as long as we keep buying their low quality products. GM finally 'fessed up a few months ago in some magazine ads. "Yes, we scrimped on Quality in the 1980's" I think some
car companys are still doing business this same way. Thanks for letting me vent!

all cars have problems...period.

my parents Lexus LS400 has been kept up just like the manual says...even taken to the dealer for all work. and it has problems...why? because it's 14 years old! my point is all things break...it just depends on when. a LS400 cost's $45,000. a dakota costs $20,000. which do you think will break first?

Thanks for your insiteful post. I purchased a 2000 SLT for my husband. It has about 42,000 miles and acts like he takes it to the mountains. All the usual symptoms noises in the rear during turning, door lock noises, door lock and automatic window phantoms, and occasionally stalling on decel. I also work in an R&D/manufacturing environment. The problem is we continue to buy products that are not finished, they are pushed to market either before they are ready or cost down until they lose their customer base. We dumped Ford vehicles for the same issue, prior to buying my hyundai. I have had no problems with my little cheap import. We might buy a foreign truck next time. Why.... because we can no longer afford to bleed money on vehicles...Detroit needs to wake up.

I work for a supplier to Chrysler and I can say the reason way have crap quality is because the big 3 force the supplier to make the parts cheaper every year even though we never see the savings in the sticker price. Good example. We made a keyless entry for GM and it worked great. Then the next year Gm told us if we want to keep the bussiness we would have to sell it to them for 10% so we re-engineered the thing and it was CRAP. It never worked right and then GM told us to fix it. As a supplier we still have to make money too, raises and so forth. This is why we have crap quality on our cars/trucks. I own a Dakota and like it I knew going in it was going to have problems but I like the styling and I get the discount.

Don't pick on Detroit.... pick on the UAW for not giving a crap about the shoddy workers they force upon the big 3. I've never met a UAW work under the age of 40 that gave two hoots about the crappy work they do. Ever buy a car or truck that was made on a Friday or Saturday? I have, and it was in great shape because it pratically never left the dealership service bay.

Shout all you want about toyota quality, but they have problems with their trucks too. A Toyota's quality image is built on their Camry, not their pickups. The sad fact is that as cars and trucks become increasingly more complex, so will their problems.
