Subject: Faulty tranny on new 4.7's
IP: Logged

Message:
I just recently went in for an oil change for my 2001 4.7 auto, the dealership said my transmission fluid was leaking and they needed to seal the leak. A couple days later I called and I was told they needed to put in a brand new tranny, Chrysler might have to recall this new multi-speed tranny in the 4.7's. Whoever has a 4.7, I would get this checked out, make sure it doesn't happen after warranty expires.

Yes, I have this problem also. The front pump seal started leaking at 5000 mi. I now have 7k. And the dealer still has not fixed it.No parts in yet. An inconvenience indeed. Chrysler should just recall the whole truck. Mine is white '01 QC SLT 4x4 Auto w/ new Leer SUV style top. Nice truck with lot's of mechanical problems!

I had mine in at 8000 miles for a trans leak. Turned out to be a front pump gone bad. Took the dealer 8 days to get it in. 8 DAYS!!! I was furious!!! They called me on the 9th day to say it was ready, when I went to get it, the service writer said it wasn't ready!!! They got to hear me rant, rave, cuss, and carry on in the middle of the service lane with about 5 or 6 other customers waiting in the lounge.. I got some free stuff for it. Lesson learned? 1. Fix problems under warranty. 2.Throw a fit whenever possible. 3.Always ask for "just in time" delivery 4.Cops aren't nice when you go sideways out of a dealer parking lot in a rental.

Well, dunno about the front pump seal, I'll have to watch for that, but I just had to have the transfer case output seal replaced.
Took the beast in for an oil change and to have the bed aligned and the tech found the seal leaking like a sieve and no fluid in the TC at all.
Gotta love the build quality on these Dodges...

Yup I have problems with the t-case as well. My first one cracked. Fought for a week for them to do it. They said it was my fault. Anyhow got them to replace it. Then at 25000 the t-case was leaking. I had to wait cus my dogde dealer was booked. 7000 miles later finally got it in. Replaced 2 seals on the t-case. Not a week later leaking really bad. What is up with this dodge runnng gear. I guess I have to wait. This time it will be off the warrenty fix. They better fix it if it goes off cuz I repoted it before the warrenty ended.

Had nothing but trouble with the man. tranny and t-case.

Hers one for ya.

2000 QC 4.7 - 45,000 Miles. Tranny just failed. won't shift out of first gear.

Had it to the the dealer in April due to harsh shifting between fisrst & second gear. They updated the "software"..seemed to help. Six months later ...truck is dead.

Dealer won't cover under warrantee.

I have a 2001 QC 2WD with the 4.7 and the multispeed tranny. Around 2000 miles the truck would sometimes jerk and downshift roughly from 1st to 2nd. I took it to the dealership and they told me they couldn't find anything. What a suprise. I now have about 16000 on it and it still jerks. Anybody else have this problem?

Has anyone had, or heard of, problems with the Manual transmission "popping" out of 1st gear? This started with my 2000 Dakota 4x4, 4.7 quadcab within a month of purchase. The dealer fixed it under warranty and six months later it happened again, but not as frequently. This lower frequency was do to driving style: rolling while shifting into 1st rather than at stop. If you are having this problem (truck shutters and sounds like someone hits you from behind) the way to reproduce it is to shift from 2nd or neutral to 1st at a complete stop. Took me 4 visists with the dealer the first time to figure this out. My t-case also cracked within 2 weeks of ownership. I baby this truck - it is not a case of abuse - my past toyotas have stood up to harsher offroad use with no problems like this.

I have a 2001 QC 4.7 with the multi-speed. The only I have noticed is that over the last 9 months I have owned the truck, I've had a problem with what could best be described as a "slipping ?" tranny. Each and everytime, the truck had been sitting overnight or during the day at work. I start it, put it in DRIVE, depress the gas and all I get is a little creep, more revs just gives a little more creep. If I creep all the way down the block of my neighborhood, it eventually hooks up and begins to run normally. I checked the fluid level and it looks right. I'll be taking it into the dealer next week. Has anyone else seen this behavior ?

Yes...I experieneced the same problem for about 6-months with my 2000 QC 4X4, just prior to the transmission going completely. I just had the Transmission re-built by Chrysler and seems to be good as new. The technician said some pin had broken.

I had the "slipping" problem when the truck was cold and I put it into reverse. The truck just wouldn't move until it reached about 2500 RPM. When it warmed up it it ran fine until one day at a stop sign on a hill it revved up to about 4000 rpm and would only creep forward. I took it to the dealer and they rebuilt the Tranny.

Given that the Truck had 46,000 miles and was out of warrantee the dealer refused to cover it under warrantee. I did eventually get chrysler to cover all but $100.00 under their "goodwill" program.

Good Luck

Dodge replaced my 5speed tranny under warrantee with a new unit. The new tranny shifts more precisely with no problems yet. I don't know anything about newer models. If you are set on buying a new dakota, get the extended warrantee. If you want reliability, look elsewhere. I have now had the transfercase rebuilt (cracked rear housing when bought), the tranny rebuilt, then replaced (problem popping out of first gear from time of purchase), clutch master cylinder replaced (squeaked, bad seal). To dodge's credit they replaced all under warrantee, this truck has not been abused by any stretch. It is my second go with a dakota, the first 2000 QC I ordered rolled off the truck and the brakes didn't work AT ALL, I was told it took 1/4 mile to stop it, Dodge bought it back when the problem couldn't be ID'ed. My current 4.7 QC 4x4 looks perfect, and with exception of gas mileage (best is 15 on highway at 70 mph), the above exceptions and too high of gearing (392:1), performs as it should.

Well i think i might be one of the next guys on here here to have a fauly auto 4.7L tranny. Yesterday i heard a weird rattling sound coming from under the truck. I first investigated the cats...but they are fine. When you rev the truck up to about 1000-2000 rpms, you hear this rattle...but in park only when you let off the gas. But as you drive you hear it anytime it runs in teh 1-2k roms range. I am not sure if the problem is a valve problem or the tranny. But i have to take it the shop once again to find out what is wrong. THis is the 3 month in a row for repairs!!! i think i got a lemon but i know i won't be able to do anything about it!!!! oh well. Live and learn and buy something else than dodge next time!!!

blueangel I just had the same thing on my brand truck. third day starting a noise like the faulty catback will do. Thats what I though too. The dealer fixed saying it was the inspection cover on the torque convertor on the bell housing.Moved out of place ,readjust everything is fine... Fine for a day although there has been a high pitched whistle noise. Next morning same rattle...Bringing it it tomorrow and believe me I'm not a comsumer who likes games. After reading all these tranny probs and finding you've had /have the same issue. Heads will roll tomorrow.

hey joedak, yeah i also forgot to mention i have also had a hard time with this tranny not shifting at high rpms, like when you get on it goign out of a parking lot or esp on the highway on a ramp. LAstly i have also had it where i went to put it into reverse or drive and i sit there hitting the gas and no go!! i have to dump it into park or neutral and then into reverse or drive to get to go anywhere. I truely think its a solonoid problem its something i have had since i first got the truck but they never believe me bc it is not a constant problem. well hope they get your's fixed and same with mine. i have to go to lancaster today which is 250-300 miles from home and i am goign to use my parents ford truck which has 99,600 miles on it. and it makes me sad that a truck like that can last so long without any problems and my dak has had nothing but problems in the firs 30 k of its little life!!!!!!!

John Murphy,

What was the cost to have your tranny overhauled? I am starting to experience the same problems. I have 40k miles on my truck (out of warranty) and am having a tough time deciding what I want to do. I am reluctant to take it in to the dealer because that will document a problem... which could cause me problems in getting rid of it (if I choose to). If an overhaul is in the thousands, I am thinking about trading it in. Give Dodge their junk back to them!

anyone ever have a problem with the trans starting off in second gear and only shifting to third. had the problem 3 times. it took the dealer all three times to figure it out. first guess was to clear the trouble code that had been set the second try they changed out the trans control module it was a nice try but the last time the dealer said it was caused by a faulty camshaft position sensor? what gives new truck with more problems then a beater tempo with 100k on it. also had an engine failure at 7000k miles . quick truck but im afraid to keep it due to these kinda of problems. just my o2 on the situation.

Cost for re-built tranny would be about $2,700.00. Chrysler covered all but $100.00 under their "goodwill" Program. Their regional service manager said that they only were covering it because the truck is only 1.5 years old (45,000 miles).

Well, it looks like I'm starting to have problems with my tranny too. The tranny is begining to slip. So far, it has slipped only in the mornings when i'm leaving for work. It has happened four times, and the truck has only 6k miles. I have an appointment with the dealer next tuesday for them to take a look. Has anyone else had there's looked at or fixed? Any direction I can lead the service dept in would be helpful.

6,400 miles and my tranny is popping out of gear every once in a while. I never notice it going out, just when the shift lever pops back in. Dealer is going to check it out this week when it goes in for another round of "whats wrong with this transfer case seal" investigation.
I posted earlier about the Front TC seal leaking, it was replaced under warranty and now it's leaking again. This truck hardly gets any 4x4 use and even though the front shaft always rotates I cannot believe the seal is gone already. Dealer thinks something is actually cracked...sheesh!

I have 02 QC, 3200 miles. Started off with bad paint that the dealer fixed. Then noticed transmission fluid leaking. I took the truck to the dealer, they figured out that the front pump seal was leaking. 8 days later I finally got it back from the dealer. About 500 miles later noticed a hard down shift when coming to a stop light and then the truck would not move for a couple of seconds when I tried to accelerate away from the light. Has happened twice so far. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem. So yes, sounds like 02's have the same problems. Called D-C to let them know my concerns with the quality of their product.

My Transmission sucks. I bought a 2001 Motorsports Edition Dakota in Sept. of 2001, 4.7 auto. It was fine for a while, and then I noticed that when I went to shift from drive to reverse, or reverse to drive, or reverse to park, the thing sounds like its grinding like a mother. So I ask the dealership at my first oil change, they had the service tech give a listen when he drove it into the bay to do the change, but, he never changed gears except from drive to park. So, they told me the noise I was hearing was the ticking of the transmission changing gears. I was like.. umm.. o.k. Then recently I have noticed sluggish shifting between first and second gears while driving, and the other day, I was at a red light, and the light change, I went to go, and the transmission sounded like it was going to fall out. I called the dealer about these problems, as well as the foamy oil. I have an appoitment thursday to see what it is. Reading about all these problems with peoples transmissions, im kinda pissed!

It always shifted funny, thought it was the break in period, but when the check engine light comes on and you have power loss, something is up! Why spend the money on aftermarket parts to boost power when you have nothing to convert it the wheels? I have the extended 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, so I don't feel too bad. I initially had some problems (see 11/15/2001 entry) but since then have not had those problems...no visit to the dealer either. The only thing I've noticed is that you can occasionally catch the trans off-guard and the shift is abrupt. I still wonder about the longevity of the box though (my FIRST American vehicle in 25 years of driving, keeping my fingers crossed cause I REALLY like the looks of the upcoming Chyrsler Pacifica http://www.chrysler.com/inside/autoshow/news_2.html?tsrc=home&tgrp=promo5&tname=pacifica_home).
