Subject: Auto trans shift clunk
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 Dakota Club Cab, 5.2L, 4x4 with a std 4 spd Auto, and a HD 231 transfer case. I get the wildest clunk when shifting from D to R and a still noticeable but less harsh clunk from R to D. I have 80K miles on the beauty and have had the problem for some time. Lately it is getting a little worrysome. I changed the U-joints as we did years ago, with no benefit. SOme tell me it is a common trait, don't worry. Others tell me it may be the transfer case and perhaps either a bad chain or bad gears. Any thoughts?

I have a 93 LE and it does the same thing, I have replaced u-joints...no change. I'm going to try packing the front yoke with grease and see if that improves it. if not then I guess it's just slop in the rear-end.

I have a 2000 CC 4x2 that clunks from park to reverse (worse on slopes), the trucks comming up on 50k mi. now. Personally I'm used to it and it doesn't seem to cause any problems of any kind aside from being a little annoying every now and then.

My '98 RC does the same thing. Shifting out of park was also one that would cause the clunk until I started parking (I have an auto tranny) by using my parking break, shifting to neutral and releasing the standard breaks, THEN shifting to park. Seems to have helped the D to R clunk some as well.

My '96 3.9 Sport does this on hills too. I baby my trannies, wether auto or standard, so I park as DakotaRebel does. Neutral, parking brake, release the pedal, shift to park. I shift to neutral when I park, then release the brakes on flattish terrain, and if it rolls at all, even if it stops on it's own, I engage the parking brake.
I cringe every time my dad drives the truck and forgets to engage the parking brake on a hill (or engages it after putting it in Park and releasing the brakes, which is just as bad for the tranny)
I don't know... much of what's "good or bad" for many parts on vehicles is people's opinion. I also shift manual trannies to neutral at a stop and let the clutch out. That's simply my opinion/style.
Later,
Jon

How to Fix...

Change the tranny fluid using mopar filter and mopar atf+3. Be sure to drain torque converter and radiator ( trans fluid only :). While you have the pan off to replace the filter, adjust the bands on the transmission itself, this re-calibrates the shifts and will certainly resolve the clunk.

the dealer the said it was a cable tensioner in

happenes from P to R. N to R. those two are
the worst especially in an incline. also in N to
D but not as bad. the truck only has 400 miles

I had the same problem and the dealer told me it was the rear spring loading and unloading, they threw some white grease in there, and it still did it, but I said whatever. Coming up on 15,000. Depending on how much money I have, I might have them change the tranny fluid along with the oil change. How much is a tranny flush anyhow?

I was just quoted $310 for a tranny flush and filter. Two filters and 13 quarts of ATF+4 for my 45RFE. The auto tranny had been getting worse since day one. I want to roll this thing off of a cliff.

$310?? wow.. called my dealer the other day about.. Flush was like $160, Service was $170, which included dropping the pan, flushing the whole system, new filter, and tightening of the bands. Check around, cause $310's alot, esspecially just for a flush and ilfter.

I've been having the same problem with my 98 V6 auto trans. When I took the truck in while it was still under warrentee, the dealership said that "that's just the way they are made" and to just "get used to it". I just took it in for servicing (no longer under warrentee) with the same complaints, and the dealership said that for $79 per hour labor plus parts, they can fix the problem. Crooks !!!!!

I have noticed that when I shift from Park to Neutral, the truck is stuck in park and won't roll untill I shift into R. Sometimes when I try this, it will pop out of P into Neutral.

What's keeping it stuck in Park ?

Thanks

Ah my truck does it from time to time but mainly on a hill. It's not just a problem with Dodge's either... lots of auto transmissions do this. Not a big problem, doesn't do any harm. Fixing it can be very expensive and it will only end up happening again.

98SLT, 4spd auto w/ 45k miles, w/ same clunk. Dealer performed trans filter swap & fluid flush for $80. I've not noticed much of a difference. The parking break thing works 95% of the time, but I believe the trans-band adj. is the ticket. Of course my dealer did not notice a clunk.???

Auto transmissions can clunk for a number of
reasons. Some noise is normal since it is the
loading and unloading of the drivetrain. i.e.
"freeplay" between components. Some of
what you are describing is noise from the
parking sprag which, if I recall correctly, is part
of the valve body. More noticeable on hills.
Does it HARM anything? No, I don't think it
does. I would be more concerned with a
WEAK engagement of the driveline than a
hard one. i.e., slipping than banging into gear
or just plain slipping. Oh and be sure to have
a tranny cooler if you haul ANYTHING. Cook
the fluid and your gearbox won't be far behind.

'94 Dakota Clubcab 4x4, 3.9L V6, 42RH 4sp Auto, bought used at 52k, original owner always had the severe clunk into R, dealers always said that's how they are. I've always had it, two dealers told me the same. Common sense said this severe clunk, over time, just had to be taking it's toll. I babied the tranny, no hauling, etc., drove it 'easy', changed fluid and filter each 20-25K with the good chrysler fluid, no dexron junk. At 110K during servicing, broken piece of a snap ring or retainer ring found in pan. Then 2 wks ago...136k miles...I go to put it into Reverse...and zip...nada...no Reverse. The clunk had been worse the previous few days with more of a 'steel' clanging/banging sound. I'm referred to a good shop, says a re-build, $1,650 dollars. I mention I think there is a TSB about a clunking sound during a coast-down downshift, and I do have that problem besides the clunk into R. I'm told they will do the latest improvements and changes during the rebuild. I still have the same clunk into Reverse, probably even worse, and still have the clunk during the downshift. Now also have a harsh upshift, slamming into gear on an upshift at 20mph. I then found the TSB that addressed the downshift clunk, it involved a differrent overdrive unit part number and spacer. I dont know if that would have fixed the clunking into R also or just the downshift clunk. But, seems like it was built same way...so, as time goes on, and it keeps getting slammed, the tranny will let go again. Who knows how long it will last this time. What a hit, $$$, very depressing, to say the least.

I had an 83 Plymouth Gran Fury that did this for 80,000 miles that I had it (from 60,000 to 140,000) never hurt a thing. Now my 99' Dak CC SLT does the same thing, (sounds exactly the same). Shift in to reverse, WHAM. If you're full of money, fix it. Then send some to the rest of us so we can fix ours. ;)

02 Dakota, V8, auto 4x4, limit slip rear. When shifting out of drive truck will lurch a little and make at times a harsh clunk noise in the rear of truck and in the transfer case. This is intermittent, does it mostly when it has been driven for an hour, but not all the time. Weird thing is when it is raining and cool out, it does not do it. Same for shifting from reverse to drive. Chrysler says it is characteristic of dakotas. Been to dealer 3 times, they say the same thing as Chrysler. If that is a characteristic, then it is poor quality. This will eventually hurt something in the drive train. It is too harsh at times and a metal to metal clunk sound. Anybody else have this problem on a 02 Dakota. Any ideas of how to correct this, before I write my letter to Chrysler and seek legal advice. Thanx in advance for any info.

Does yours lurch forward when shifting out of drive and clank so loud that it echoes under the awning at a gas station? Mine does, it is not a normal clunk or lite noise. It is very harsh. If it is it may make me feel better, but it is embarrasing at the gas station to have people look to see what that noise was.

That is the same problem I am having. Still clunks going into nuetral, but not quite as bad. Worse on warm days. If it is as bad next summer as it was last summer I am writing my letter to Chrysler. I have 18 months for a final repair in this state. Have been told by service department here my town that the trans is controlled by the computer because it is fully electronic. They can not make any adjustments for the harsh out of gear shift, because there is no info from Chrysler on how to do this. So the impression I get is if you get a quirky 45RFE trans there is not much they can do for it, or they are afraid to try because they do not understand the computer to trans functions very well.
