If you want more bang for your buck, have work done to the heads, intake. Ofcourse there are things that go along with that like, cams, injection,TB's and so on. If you do your homework you'll find out that a set of really good heads will work wonders for making power. If your on a budget, have your old heads ported and polished also do the same to the intake. Make the motor breath better and you'll make better power. The key is to do the reaserch.

The "secret" is in the cam. The factory cam is far too mild. It doesn't take much to produce more torque to go along with the changes truck guy mentioned.

For torque production, I've found that a simple chamber polish and port clean up is really all you need. Hogging out the ports and bigger valves are needed for high rpm hp, but may actually decrease torque production. At the same time, I like to port match the intake and exhaust manifolds. These are things you can do at home, almost for free.

You should also consider increasing the compression ratio. Since you're replacing the pistons, it doesn't cost you anything. I wouldn't waste money on forged pistons unless you're going with a power adder.
