Subject: buying at R/T

Hey guys, ive been looking at R/T's for a while now and have finally stopped delaying and put my current truck up for sale...as you all know the last model year of the R/T was '03, so low mileage is kind of out of the question...then again a lot of trucks ive found are around 60 000 miles, i found one with only 30000, and hope to get that one but if it doesnt work out im just wondering how the trannys, rear end, other parts hold up..any input is greatly appreciated

i have had two friends with R/Ts one heavily modified and the other stock.

the stock one had 135k mile on when my friend sold it with no major problems.

the modified one had 80k and had to have the trans rebuilt and the motor replaced.

the trans is the weakest link and some go at around 80k miles.

the rear end can have problems with the clutch packs in the LSD but thats not real common unless they're very abuse to it.

the 5.9 cracks heads easier than most motors and around 130k+ Miles they tend to crack even when your easy on the motor.

that is about it, that i know of.

have you looked at the 4.7L motor? those come with a better trans and almost or match the performance of the R/Ts 5.9.

i own a 98 5.2 and it will take R/Ts to 70mph when evenly matched.

thats good info to know about...i have heard about transmission issues in the R/T's, and also how close the 4.7 matches the performance of the 5.9.
The main reason i would go with the 5.9 is because of
1) R/T model...sure others look the same, but theres only one true dak rt
2)older design technology, from what ive heard, mods are a lot simpler to do on the 5.9 then on the 4.7 because of all the electrical and computers that control it (please correct me if im wrong on that!)
3)if the tranny goes...then replacement will suck but i love the r/t model enough to make it worthwhile, and if the engine goes...overhaul and $5 grand later no 4.7 will come close to it, right?
Thanks a lot for your answer, and i would appreciate any feedback if anything i said sounds wrong, im just going off from what ive heard...im sure you know more about it then me!!

If you do decide on buying either, it would be a good idea to buy an extended warranty from a warranty company. I have been glad I got one on both my Dak R/T and my Durango R/T. Mine cost like $995 on my 99' Dak when I bought it. I have saved way more than that on repairs. And by the way, my dak only has 41,000 miles and not mistreated. but it has had the A/C go out, rear end gears break, and an intake manifold that needed to be replaced among a few of the things covered. just one of those things. The warranty on my used 2001 Durango was $1,300, but the tranny had to be rebuilt after only 75 miles ( don't go to Armstrong Buick in Gladstone, OR! lol ) to the tune of $1950 so I saved some money there. But the Dodge dealer wanted 3 times that amount. Damn dealers! So went to Aamco. It's a crap shoot as to whether your vehicle will be trouble free or just plain trouble. An extended warranty will take the pain away and keep your wallet in your pocket.

you are right that there is only one R/T and that was what i figure was one of your reasons for getting it.

the 5.9 motor has been around since the 70s so there are much more in the aftermarket that is cheaper and you can make more power with the 360c.i(5.9) than the 4.7 with much less money. the 46re trans that comes with the 5.9 has a lot out there you can do for it as while so if it does go you can get it built up well to handle a high amount of power.

what you have been told has been accurate and you sound like you know enough to understand the ups and downs with getting a R/T

like Jerry said its a crap shoot, i hope you're accurate...

both of my friends sold there R/Ts
the one with 135K+ miles sold for $5800
the other sold for $6500 and was back to stock with rebuilt tran with shift kit and a new 360 motor and hotchkis lowering kit for the front end.

both were black and both in great condition, so hopeful you can find a low mileage well maintain one for cheap...

good luck!

Check e-bay. There are always several for sale - some with low miles. You just have to be lucky that one is in your area. I bought my 2000 R/T off e-bay a couple of years ago with 9,200 miles on it. Only had to drive 3 hours to get it. By the way, you're right. The R/T just looks good and is a blast to drive - even for a 55 year old 'kid'. Good luck

I agree with ov, bought my 99 off e-bay only had 26K on it, immaculate condition, body and mechanically, so their out there, just have to keep looking. There is nothing like the look and feel of an R/T, even for another above 50-year-old kid. Best of luck

Mostly good info on this thread; but I can't agree with the extended warranty recomendation. The companies selling these aren't in business to loose money on them - they know most vehicles will not need that much work. Many are hard to get to cover your problem - they'll balk at paying if you don't have all service records; or if they can claim you abused the vehicle. I'm many thousands of dollars ahead of where I'd be if I bought one of these plans for every vehicle I've owned. You'll hear from the occasional guy who made out, but if that was to be expected, these warranty outfits would be loosing $$$ - rest assured they are not...

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Ive found a black club cab with 55000 miles on it, looks like brand new it has leather and all options, seems to be in really good shape, 55k shouldnt be anything to worry about, right? its from a 5 star dealership, passed all the tests, looks to be the one, test drive is tomorrow!!! i plan on looking on shape of tires (see how much they've been burned), shift gears like mad to see how the tranny responds, check oil condition under the valve cover, anything else to look for? thanks for all the input, i think my 55 000 mile question is already answered...as in GO FOR IT!!!

punch it from a stop with it in "D" and make sure it shifts to 2nd before hitting the rev limiter. you have to have traction to do this.

lets us know how it goes...

i gave'r from a stop in D, and it shifted through the gears flawlessly, and i ended up making a deal that day, the only thing i now noticed is when i shift to gear one (you can hear it shift down properly so you know it is in gear one), but the little box around the gears on the dash doesnt light up around the 1...nothing major probably just something electronic, or is this normal? tranny fluid in it is clean as anything as well, couldnt be happier after my first night with it, however the blown starter fuse was a bad surprise when the truck wouldnt start!!!

They're making an R/T again!!

There is one on the showroom floor right now on the south loop of 610, in Houston!

It's a late model 06, r/t, w/ 4.7 HO engine.

I didn't ask if you could get a manual or not, I'm still in love with my 01, QC!

I wish I had seen this thread earlier - I have an 03 White RC R/T for sale in Las Vegas, 25900 miles on it, great shape. Too late for Jared, but maybe someone else might be interested.
