Subject: Clear Coat Problems?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone else have problems with the finish clearcoat over the paint? I have a 99 Dakota Sport Club Cab 5.2L that started losing the clearcoat at approx. 40000 miles.

Chrysler wouldn't do anything about it.

And is there anything I can do to make it look better other than getting it professionally done?

Thanx

I've seen some Daks that are chipping real bad where the clearcoat has run off. Same problem I see quite often with Toyota Tacomas as well. I haven't heard of many people complaining about it though. I just do my best to put a high-grade polish on every month or so to make sure it doesn't fade. Luckily, my truck is white so you probably wouldn't notice much anyways.

i have the "paint cancer" issue on the roof of my black, 99 Dakota sport. it pisses me off as it's only on the roof like many other Dakotas. i contacted dc about this and they accused me of using inferior waxes that promote the clear coat degradation. we got phucked at the drive thru with this one boyz and girlz.

wel of course they will blame you. they will say. you use poor waxes, you left it out in the sun too long. so on and so on. they will never admit fault. they are like all other company. they are in it to make money. to admit they screwed up would cost them money. rather stick you with the problem to pay to have it re painted and they hope by them. atleast ford did do something about their paint issues in the late 80's early 90's. for paint fading. my 89 mustang had it but they said it was past the cut off date. so after I got hit in the stang. the body shop I took it too. repainted my hood and roof. for no extra charge. thats rare for a body shop to do.

so in closing you really think DCX will do anything about the paint problem. when they have more major issues with their heater core springing a leak.

IF someone figures out how to get a paint job from DC, let me know. They would'nt fix the obvious fish eyes, and spot where the hauler dropped the chain on this less than paper thin black paint. 0.4 miles on truck, so they could'nt blame me.
And I said I'd never own another black vehicle!

Common problem with Dakotas here in Nevada. Especially evident on dark colors. My black '97 is getting the same problem. It just started a few months ago on the top of the cab and now it's spreading to the hood. DC uses inferior clear coat, and theres not much you can do about it I guess. Since I like the truck so much, I'm getting it repainted professionally. This time it will last much longer!

My 1999 Sport has the same problem in a few places.

What I did to stop the clearcoat peeling from spreading in those places was to buy some brush on clear touch up paint. I then paint that around the edges of the clearcoat in those spots where it has peeled away.

On mine, I actually had to scratch away the loose clearcoat from those spots that would've peeled away anyway in order to get to a solid part of the clearcoat to brush on the touch up paint.

It has effectively stopped the clearcoat from peeling any further on my truck. I do keep an eye on the spots when I wash it and stuff though; in some spots I had to put extra layers of the touch up paint on.

Good idea. I thought about trying something like that myself. Just repairing the clear coat. Since you did it and it actually works, I think I'll go ahead and try the same. Other than the clear coat, the paint is still in perfect condition. What a shame that Chrysler is too cheap to use quality clear coat on their vehicles.
