I have a 99 5.2 Dak, My temp gauge spikes every now and then while driving, then as soon as its at its max for a few seconds, the temp goes back down. The interesting part being that when the gauge starts to rise, the heater stops working and blows cold air, then, when it goes back down again, the heater works again.

Any thoughts?

sounds like air bubbles in the system. believe it or not, if the system is near empty, and the temp gauge is almost maxed out, the heater will blow cold air because there isn't hot coolant in the heater core.

with the motor almost cold, take off the radiator cap and start the motor. let the motor build heat till you feel hot water flowing through the top radiator hose. that way you'll know the t-stat is open and coolant is flowing through the system. check the coolant level in the radiator. if it's low, top it off and put the radiator cap on. also, double check the overflow yank and fill accordingly.

Mine does the same thing. Fluid levels are normal. Have changed the thermostat 3 times, water pump, fan clutch and radiator and it still does it. It doesn't over heat when it stays parked. Could it be the auxillary transmission cooler is plugged?

could it be that your coolant has something in it?? (maybe stop leak, rust or scale) Cause if it does, it maybe a blockage floating through your coolant and catching in various places throughout your engine or heater core causing the fluid to stop flowing. once enough pressure builds up behind the blockage then it could move it. which would explain the temperature spikes and no heat. just a suggestion, maybe try a flush and fill.

I'd think a blockage might blow a cooling hose - Have you guys tried to purge air out of the system ?
