Im looking at a 91 dakota 2wd ext cab with the 318 auto, its got 176k on it and on cold start up it puffs just a bit of smoke. is this the begining of the end for this engine. the rest of the truck is in incredible shape and it looks great. whats and low milage 318 cost anyways. he only wants about $2500 for it so is it a good deal?

any advice would be great

thanks

joe

That means she's burning some oil. It could be the seats for the valves are worn out and when you shut the motor off, the oil seeps into the compustion chamber. Does it make blue smoke when you restart it after it had just ran?

All depends on how the engine was maintained- I had leaking valve guides like yours for 5 years before the engine finally got too loose at 350KM. Compression test.

I would suspect valve SEALS first. Run the engine till warm. Shut it down and let it sit for an hour. Restart while watching the evhaust so you don't miss nothing. You get a puff of blue at stsrtup you can be reasonable sure it is your valve seals.

So many problems .... So little time

Yeah easy way to tell the diff of piston ring wear from valve guides.

Valve guides only smoke on first start up, when you let OFF of the gas to come to a stop (when manifold vacuum is highest) and when you go again from a stop it may puff briefly and go away once on the throttle.

Worn rings will smoke when you are ON the throttle and less when you are off of the throttle.

Worn valve guides is no big deal. About the worst is you live with the slight smoke at start up and when you let off the throttle, etc.

Worn rings is when it goes downhill faster.

The bottom end of a 318 will last a long time.
I doubt it is the end of it.
