I use the BlackMagic150. It has the thermostat control (option) and does the job in Michigan.

I got a Taurus fan out of a junkyard for 25 bucks, bought a 4x4 sheet of Alum. 35 bucks. had top and bottom bent and cut at a sheetmetal shop 25 bucks. I got the adjustable stat from Checker auto.12 bucks.
I made my own mounts for the rad. and the fan. The fan is a 2 speed fan out of a dorf taurus I only use the low speed side of the fan and it cools great on a hot summer day in colorado..
goodluck.

I had a lot of trouble with my truck overheating and was asking the same questions. I was hearing my fan roar and everything, but oped instead to replace the original Fan Clutch Unit, $67. Even with the fan roaring, it may not be operating the way it should. Haven't had any trouble with it since....

Dont cheap out......anything with 17" and under WILL NOT cool the engine. I live in North Carolina. I used the Flex-a-lite 27" dual fan. It's a bit expensive, but it comes with the fancy controller for the A/C and everything including manual shutoff and others.

I agree, don't cheap out. You may live in a cold climate and think you can get away with a smaller/cheaper fan. But I bet you can remember some days in the recent past that were pretty darn hot. Add A/C, hot weather, and a load, and now you're in trouble.

Measure the opening of the stock factory shroud. Look in a magazine like Street Rodder for suppliers of rod parts, or do a google search. Find a fan that fills up that hole. Get a fan that has the blades connected at the tip, they last longer. Spiral blades are supposed to be quieter. I'v used Spal and Black Magic in the past with good results.

Go to Summit or Jegs and get a control harness.

I would also suggest an over ride switch so you can turn it off at speeds over 45mph or so.
