Subject: Buying a Durango (kinda long)

Hi, I'm in the market for a Durango 4x4 to pull ATV's with. Need a back seat, don't know anything about the QC Dak's.
I drove a couple of '03's both with the 4.7. The first one is an SLT and had 70K mi on it and had a funny erratic cold idle, price $12,500. It felt a bit sluggish once warmed up, too.
The other '03 is an SLT and had 29K mi on it and ran fine and was snappy, it had tire chirp on the 1-2 upshift, I'd say it was making about 25 more hp than the other '03. Price is $11,300 w/ a prior salvage title history.
I also drove an '02 SLT+ w/ the 360, $11,900. It felt the strongest but makes a noise whenever I put it into reverse, it had 81K miles on it.
I'm trying to get ahold of the owner of a '99 SLT w/ the 360, priced at $7,300 w/ 83K mi on it.
Just trying to get opinions & feedback from knowledgeable Mopar folks who've owned these trucks...:) Hmmm I called the 5.9 a 360, must be missing my old '79 Newport ex-cop cruiser, fun times I had in high school racing stock 350 Camaros & 6.6 T/A's and keeping up with and eventually passing them. :)

Well I drove the '99 today, and it was pretty smooth, but seemed no more powerfull than that one '03 w/ the 4.7. I wonder why the '99 5.9 felt weaker than the '02 5.9? Was there a change in them?

Forget the salvage title jobber. You can really get hurt on those. Lots of them showing up now days fron Katrena???? and others. Was a tough year on autos. Even If a car/truck shows a clean tittle do a car fax and also check it out very carefully yourself. Guys do buy these for pennies and make them look ok themselfs with no salvage title to give it away.

So many problems .... So little time

Well I found a 2nd owner '00 Durango R/T for $9,350. It is drk. blue, leather & has 75K miles. It is not local to me and I would have to travel. Do you think it'll be only as fast as the '99 SLT I drove? That '02 SLT+ seemed very quick-I wonder if this '00 R/T will still be slower? Should I go for the R/T?

if the 99 was a SLT it had the 5.2 and that would explain the difference in power. the R/T durango should be noticeable faster than the 99 SLT. if the 99 was indeed the 318 but a flowmaster muffler and a home made cold air intake will give you the same performance as the R/T durango with just about the same towing capacity. the trans are the weakest links on these trucks. good luck with your pick and i think the trans that comes behind the 4.7 is the tougher of the two.

My 99 has the 318. As long as I been driving every once in a while a new auto is made that is a dog. On the other hand every once in a while one slips by that runs like there was no tomorrow. My SLT 99 318 easily out runs my friends 360 durango. Don't figure but it does. Also out runs his 360 94 Ram but that truck is heavier then mine. All are automatics. My 99 can lay a patch of rubber that is out of sight. Does this taking off from a standstill and engine idling. I well never stage an auto. They self distruct in a short life .when you do this. My truck is stock and staying that way.It will live a lot longer this way.

OBIO3 does your truck have a LSD? i can lay rubber down through 1st and 2nd just by nailing it. the auto in my truck shifts real solid for having 155k miles on it. but when i got my truck and it was stock it was pretty darn slow. o-60mph in 8.6secs, never rode in a 360 durango but i think there 0-60mph times are the same as my truck with the few mods i have.

I have an 01 Durango R/T and can pull my 4 spot trailer and my two Suzuki Z400s and my buddies 660 Raptor and I have no problem because of the All Wheel drive and the torque from the 5.9, it can take hills no problems at all, it's a great SUV plus the three rows of seating let everyone feel comfortable.

i have a 98 durango slt. It has the 5.2 (318) I think it is a dog and it's hard on gas. I'd say around 9-10 mpg. But I like it anyway. Don't drive it all that much. Just wish it ran better.
