Subject: 2001 Quad Cab 4.7L oil changes.

I am so sick of getting oil all over the place when removing the filter. I have tried wraping newspaper around it and even tried the "Plastic Coke bottle" method and I still drool oil all over the cross member.

What were the engineers thinking when they designed the 4.7L engine? Do they understand how "Gravity" works. Listen up engineers!!!! When a liquid flows out of a hole, IT FALLS STRAIGHT DOWN!!!!! Remember Isaac Newton and the apple? It was directly over his head. THAT'S WHY IT HIT HIM YOU MORONS!!! IT DIDN'T TRY TO FIND AN ACCESS HOLE TO FALL THROUGH. When your boss told you to design the engine on CADD did you think he said "BAD", and thats why you put the oil filter where it is? DUHHHHH!!!!
What you should have done is designed the whole truck to tilt forward 45 degrees so the oil will flow out of that stupid access hole instead of running down the side of the engine block and all over the place.

Oil changes can be expensive if you do it every 3000 miles like I do, that's why I do it myself, but I'm getting pretty sick of the mess.

I could use a few suggestions.

Check into oil kits. I know you can add filters, so maybe you can just change the location of the current filter.

I've never changed the oil on your truck, but I have changed oil many a time at the Dealership I once worked for.... I most alway used the filter box as a sheild. Take the oil filter out of the box, fold open the box and place it in a manner where the oil drains down the filter box instead of all over the cross member!
**It works!**

Do what I do. Take a screwdriver and hammer and punch a hole at the end of the oil filter. Let it drain out and then remove it. It makes the whole process less of mess. If you want to make the oil change go even faster, get the Fram Sure Drain system. It works great!

Same as QUADMAN, coke bottle, not a drip. I do put the front end up on ramps so the oil runs to the back of the engine where the plug is. Got the fumoto valve on mine, oil change is like a pitstop, quick, LOL.

First of all the 4.7 wasn't designed specifcally fit into the Dakota. It was just designed. The Dakota engineer who picked the 4.7 as an engine is more to blame than the engine designer.

Second of all 1/2 the fun of changing your own oil is the mess. If you don't enjoy getting dirty when you work on your truck find a cleaner hobby.

Anyway, here's what I do. After I drain the crankcase I put the drain plug back in hand tight. Then I start the engine for a few seconds let it idle (until the low oil pressusre light comes on), then shut it off. That draws the oil out of the filter. Then I take out the drain plug. Another pint of oil drains out. And not so much from the filter when removed.

I'm sorry, but I don't think I would ever reccomend anyone ever trying that method -- just my 2 cents.

I don't know about you, but I would rather not have many of those materials the oil traps put on my skin. I mean, I love getting dirty and all, but not when it comes to petroleum distillates and combustion byproducts, yuk.

Like some of the others said, get a sure drain or a relocation kit.

Why not just rev it up until the oil blows out all the gaskets.

Don't you realize that your running your oil pump dry everytime you do that? Sucking air in it can cause your pump to loose it's ability to properly pump oil to the rest of the engine and can cause it to never start pumping. In that case you will sieze up your engine and have a major expense on your hands ($thousands)

Please man, stop doing that! Unless you really hate your truck.

I used a 2-liter coke bottle and spilled some oil, then I switched to a 2-liter 7-up bottle and removed the filter without spilling a drop.

Ok, I'm gonna get hammered for this but What is the "coke bottle method" I usually just unscrew the filter until the oil trickles out and runs down the side of the filter into the pan, after setting for a couple of minutes I remove the filter the rest of the way and only spill a little oil. But I would like to try the coke bottle.

This is what I did once and it worked fine,
Get a 2 liter bottle and cut it in half, then get a pointed center punch and punch a hole in the filter and catch all the oil with that, but I dont have a 4.7, Now most of the time im in a rush and just clean up my mess afterward.

If engineiers had to work on their designs as a finished product for about 6 months alot things would change. Right know an enginier designs it and a tech. has to install it and work on it. If an engineier gets his hands dirty it is by acident. It is even worse at Diamler Chrysler. Chrysler is big on designing everthing on PC with out building any mok-ups or any parts ever touching one another in the real world. The Viper was designed and built entirely on computer. Not one single part was ever built as a model and tested in the real world. I want to know who bright idea that splash shield was with that little tiny acess hole. I have a heck of a time breaking that filter loose. If you reach up from behind the rack you can get both hands on it. I am considering Amsoil dual bypass kit just to relocate that filter some place easier to reach.

I tried the Coke bottle thing the other day. Everything was fine until the oil filter dropped into the bottle. I wasn't expecting it to fall so hard and it scared the $h_t out of me. I dropped the bottle and got oil all over the place anyway. Oh well, I guess you need nerves of steel, too. LOL.
Next time I'll be ready for it.
