Subject: 4.7 sounds like stickin valves?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have the 4.7...108k miles on her and lately I've noticed a clicking sound from what seems like both cylinder banks. It's hard to pinpoint it with the fan, exhaust, and other ambient noise in the engine bay but if I put my ears in the wheel wells it's noticable. Any ideas? Any recomended treatments? Also, if I shut the interior fan off I can hear some kind of clicking inside the cab. It doesn't speed up or slow down with the throttle...just a faint, annoying, worriesome noise. She's getting old and I'm getting nervous...

Thanks,
jc

Well if it isn't changing speed with the engine speed, then it most likely is not lifters/rod noise etc. So that may be GOOD news.

Maybe it's some weird electrical problem, causing a relay to chatter???

Does it do it if you turn the key on, but don't start the engine?

no, i was just down in the garage doing some work on it, turned the ignition key and no clicking. the sound inside the truck doesn't vary in speed and i believe it's something different than the clicking from the engine bay. sounds like it's in the dash...but, the clicking i can hear through the wheel wells...not sure if that increases with engine idle. i'll have to check but it's hard when the clutch fan is engaged to hear anything. i'll let you guys know..thanks for posting.

Does it click continuously?

Our transmissions (auto tranny) does have selenoid packs that click when going into gear. But not continuously as you drive. It last a few seconds though when you put it into gear.

And it's not very loud at all. But noticeable.

I have that same ticking sould on the driver side. I can hear it when stopped against a wall. but if I increase the throttle I cant hear it. the dealership said they didnt hear nothing but we all know how dealerships are. I just think its an exhaust leak or domething liek that.

yeah, it's def. not the auto trans solenoid...i know that sound for sure. well, i've got a fuel additive i'll run for a tank or two and see what happens. if nothing, i'll run an oil additive (chemtool brand for both).

DARK JEDI...... You never mentioned your truck year but reguardless I'd bet your click is the purge valve. Mine is a 99 and located on the firewall drivers side about straight up from the valve cover. I think in 2000 and for sure newer, this valve is located behind the battery. Crysler moved it so you could no longer hear it in the cab. Purge valve clicking is considered normal. To replace it you have about a 50/50 chance the click will go away. If it does then you have about a 50/50 chance it will stay gone. They cost about 50 bucks.

So many problems .... So little time

sorry, it's a 2000 4.7...i'll have to look at the purge valve. I actually think I looked at it today...on the 2000 does anyone know if it's between the battery and the fender? Still, I don't think it's that because I can hear it in each wheel well. I'm going to a 4wd shop to get my new rims installed tomorrow...I'll ask them what they think.

Hey cyrjm: does the noise go away once the engine has warmed up? My 2001 4.7 has a similar problem, but the clicking noise seems to go away once it's warmed up. Dealer replaced all of the valve lifters(lash adjusters) and the noise is still there. I took it back and they can't "hear anything abnormal". WTF is that supposed to mean!? Another dealership, same answer; "nothing abnormal". WTF are Dodge mechanics deaf!? ARRRGH!!! (sorry for the rant) Check the thread Noisy 4.7

Yes. It's between the battery and the fender, and has some hoses attached. The hose that connects to your intake manifold by the throttle position sensor is one of them.

It goes away a little when warmed up but yeah, I'm sure I'll get a dif. response from the dealer since mine's out of warranty. Weird thing though, my girlfriends '05 Tacoma has loud ticking and I think that's normal for the Toyota v-6...I don't know? I just know it's not normal for my Dak.

I had a tick noise coming from my 04 4.7. At first it sounded like it was from the left bank and then shortly after the right side started. all mine was , was the exhaust manifold bolts being loose.

Here's a thought; low oil pressure. Check V6 Dakotas- Amsoil at 10 pounds.
