My 2001 Club Cab Dakota 2wd with the 4.7,auto trans. has been knocking when the engine is cold. The noise basically goes away once it's warmed up. The dealership replaced all of the valve lifters(lash adjusters?), but it still knocks. I insisted they check out the bottom end. They can't hear anything abnormal with the engine and refuse to look at it any longer. The truck only has 80140 kilometers with a bit of powertrain warranty left (thank god). I have installed a K&N drop in filter and MBRP cat back exhaust. Has anyone experienced this problem? or have found an answer? Any info would be great. Thanks.

Used to have that problem with a Neon I owned. Sounded like the lifters but when I switched to SynBlend oil, it went away. If you are running regular dino oil, make a switch and see what happens. Sounds crazy, but it might work.

Can you physically feel it shaking? What RPMs is your Dak idling at when it cranks? I recently had a situation where almost immediately after I turned on the motor, the engine RPMS would drop low and the engine would shake for about 3 to 5 seconds then the RPMS would kick up and be fine. It was also starting to have spats of rough idling sitting at red-lights. Turns out my throttle body was full of nasty gunk and my IAC (Idle Air Control) couldn't adjust because it was about stuck. You may want to consider cleaning your throttle body. It is very easy to do and can't hurt to try. Took me about two hours and seems to of solved my problem with the "big cam" feel as daffydak had put it. About the hardest thing to do is getting that stupid air resonator back on for the intake. Here is a site with some good instructions. They are for a Jeep WJ, but the engine/throttle body is the same:

Just kinda throwing this idea out there to you. Your situation sounds somewhat similar to my own, and the cleaning procedure is fast, painless, and fun (if you like tinkering on your Dak). Cotton Gauss filters like K&Ns tend to let a lot more dirt particles through and, as with mine, tended to gum up the works a bit. Goodluck, Jason!

What are you using for an oil filter? Even if it's a good brand it could be defective causing starvation when the oil is cold (thicker). Sludge buildup on the pickup screen causing lack of oil when cold. Just a couple of thoughts.

So many problems .... So little time

Since you brought up the oil filter, wasn't it known that some filters drain back when the engine is off and cause low oil pressure until it filled up again?

Get Amsoil or something good, wix, etc... NOT fram from what I have read.

Thanks for the info:

Dan: You got that right! It's never going back to that stealership again!

ObieWon: Good idea. It's due for a change anyway.

jpkomm: At start-up it revs to about 1000 rpms then drops down to 600-700 rpms depending if the heater fan is on (engine runs faster with heat set to defrost and fan on?!) With the fan off engine does run rough idling at traffic lights. I will try your suggestion of cleaning the throttle body.

how did the dealership bump up your idle. I was told beings the computer controls the idle. you cant adjust it unless doing the TPS mod. and I was told by them they cant do that as its modding the emmissions stuff on the engine. I woulds like to know how they did it so I can do it on mine. my idle is low also and would like to know how this was done

I'm not sure the TPS mod would do that, but I know another way. The blade on the TB is controled by a security head torx set screw, similar to the throttle blade stop on a carb. It can be adjusted with the proper tool; or just turn it by grabbing the threads on the back side with a pair of needlenose pliers like I did. I'm surprised a dealership admitted to doing that. They usually advise not to adjust this as the problem can typically be traced to a bad or dirty IAC. I had to do it to make a ported 68mm TB from a manual truck work with my automatic. Been that way for years now with no problems.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
