Well,
well I am finally bringing someone home to meet the parents who wont take all the money disappear... Ok, they might... haha I'm picking up a 360 tomorrow and I want to know what to look for? I mean, obviously a 360 lol. I plan on building it up to a 408 but it's just a little project so its not a rush or anything.
I know to look for a vehicle with low miles and try to avoid vehicles with a lot of front-end damage.... Anything else or tips on picking a block? When I get it home, the only other checking I will have to do will be to magnaflux it, correct? I plan on replacing all other parts because I just want the big hunk of metal right now lol.
Anyways, maybe give me a few pointers before I go out!

mileage won,t matter since your going to have it bored and the higher mileage will mean more heat cycles which means less chance of core shift,this is a good thing for building a motor and more mileage less cost to buy

Vern is correct. I had my own shop for over 40 years. I built a lot of junkyard blocks. I would not touch one with less then 100,000 on the clock. things as they were, the engine had to be sitting in a car/truck so I could read the mileage. Just got to remember. your striping it to just a block and doing a total rebuild. Use the best parts available. You will never regret doing so.

i got my hands on a complete 360 out of a 02 Ram .... they couldnt tell me how many miles it had on it ... but when i pulled the pistons out .... it still had the crosshatch in the cylinder walls :) .. i only paid $600 for it :) ... it much have been VERY low in miles

Sounds like you got a killer deal.. I was offered a complete 360 from a 99 Ram today for $350 but thats more than I want... i just want the block... But honestly, I would have taken the deal but they were 3 hours away... I dont know, I'll check on it in a few weeks.. need to think about it lol

That's a great buy that just doesn't happen every day. What's wrong with having a few extra parts in your shop/garage/basement... One day you will wish you had a starter or alternater. Or one of many other things. How about an extra intake to play around with one day .
Your building an intire engine. what's wrong with a short cruise

hehe I know.. but like I said, I havnt seen it and seen all what is there and i dont want to drive all the way out there and it not really be COMPLETE.... I called back and told them I was interested and they said they'd call ME back when they got it into their shop... So we'll see... I didnt say it wasnt a great deal but its more than I intended to pay this month... ya im kinda on a fixed budget with school and all lol... Who needs an Education when you have a 360!! (just a joke.. i'm well aware of the importance of education :-p )

Hey im seriously looking into doing the same thing....but i need a sh#t load of education before i start. Ive seen some videos for sale on how to rebuild. Are these crap or worth checking out? Also besides just searching the entire web, has anyone found a site for recommendations on what to use to rebuild with? Also thanks for the info on higher mileage blocks... Without experience i would have never thought of that.

Jason52, if you just want the block, buy the whole engine for 350 and whatever you don't want put on e-vil bay and recoup some of your money for other parts you want or need.
