Subject: stalls, but has interior lights

i have just bought 95 w/ 318/auto 187000 mi. it stalls at will on longer trips (100+ mi). otherwise fine. Still has juice to run lights, but is it electrical or what. also gets fuel. sometimes i wait 5 minutes and it runs 5 more. any help?

I'm not sure if our dakotas have one but my other car did the same thing and it ended up being the stator coil inside the distributor(under the cap). It can overheat and act like a fuse and break the electrical current going to your plugs. After it cools off it will start again. I would think that maybe it is the same as a camshaft position sensor (I just looked in the haynes manual) but I'm not sure. It could also be your PCM.

Could also be ignition coil - a break in the winding can separate when it gets hot and you'll lose spark.

It could also be the 3-wire splice in the wiring harness near the underhood fuse/relay box. You'll have to unwrap the wiring harness and check to see if the 3-wire splice is corroded. If so, you have to clean it up and solder the connection then reinsulate it. Good luck!
