Hey guys new to this forum, so i thought i would start off with some good news. I just beat my buddies 5.3 chevy 1500,he has exhaust,intake,throtle body and computer. I have a 93 5.2 with intake and exhaust. it wasnt by much but i still got him. anyways had a question about the mopar computers,do they improve performance or economy enough to justify running premium gas. any thoughts would be appreciated.

good kill! i have raced to chevys with the 5.3 and only lost to one. fast trucks! the chevy doesnt out weigh my gen3 dakota by much and i was still able to take it down. doing power to weight shows the chevy at a advantage.
mopar pcm should help with performance a little. i think it just advance the timing and thats why you have to run premium.

thanks for the input, yea i think those chevys make 285hp stock so his is probably over 300, which should make up for some of the weight. it is still fun to see the look on peoples faces when they get beat by a little old truck, they have no idea what is under the hood.

The new 5.3 for 07 now makes 320hp so depending on year the hp numbers are diffrent 270-290-310-320.

if his truck is a 2003+ than he has the ls2 which puts out 295hp, if its older its the ls1 285hp.
the truck i beat, was the ls2 with intake exhaust 4x4 with 4.10s posi. the truck that beats me but only by about .2secs down the 1/4 is a ls1 in a 2wd 3.73s posi dual exhaust.
i can jump the ls1 to 60mph but once that 285+hp kicks in, he gets me down the 1/4.

I had a MP computer in my '94 Dak 5.2L 4x4 club cab w/ auto & 3.90 gearing. There was some improvement in acceleration probably around 0.3 sec. in 0-60, but my gas mileage on highway trips DROPPED! I went from 16.2 to 15.5 mpg. I didn't notice much of a change in city mileage which stayed around 11 mpg. I would say my truck ran richer w/ the MP computer.

The 5.3 is a LS series motor but not an LS1 or LS2 the LS1 is the 5.7 Camaro motor and the LS2 is the 6.0 GTO/SS Trailblazer motor.

LS1 = '97-end of c5 bodystyle corvettes, and firebirds and camaro's and GTO's of similar years.
LS2 = current corvette, GTO/SS trailblazer, cadillac cts-v, and chevy ssr's.
LS4 = 5.3 version (not for trucks) of the ls series, made for impala's, monte carlo ss's, and grand prix gsx's
LS6 = 97-04 corvette zo6
LS7 = 05-present corvette zo6
Vortech truck motors (5.3, etc.), while similar to the ls series motors, have completely different bore and stroke dimensions.
(I collect corvette's and used to own an r/t, that's why i still lurk these boards)

you guys are right about the motors i meant that there were based of the LS's designs. sorry!
gonna race another 5.3 chevy tonight. now three of my friends have these chevy trucks. i think one is a 03 one is a 01 one is a 00. i'm racing the 00 and should win. if the guy driven the chevy doesn't know how to launch it then its a easy win.

My friend has a new Tahoe 5.3 2WD
We are dead even from start to 90MPH
Just found out tonite.
I would assume they weight about the same (5,000 Lbs??? Mine has added weight to stock) but mine is also a 4WD.
Stock to stock he probably would have just beat me by close to a 1/2 second. When I had 3.55 open diff that is.
The 6.0 seems to have quite a bit more grunt then the 5.3/5.7 trucks. I've been driving a lot of Chevy 1 ton vans. The 6.0 one I have been driving is the first one that had any initial grunt from a dead stop. Actually, it's quicker form the hole than the 1/2 ton 4.8 Chevy I drove for a while. That's pretty sad!

you can tell when i floor it in my truck and the tires break loses a little than i pull a led.
the funny thing my friends stock 00 5.3 chevy is like a factor freak. the guy he races thinks his truck is unbeatable and then he doubts the mopar what a douche bag!
removing the third cat helps in power!

yeah! i should have stayed on it a little longer. we stop at 95mph he would have hit the limiter at 98mph lol
