Subject: broken axle??
IP: Logged

Message:
I was driving my quad cab 4x4 the other day and stopped to put it in 4 hi to go up my drive way. There was a loud poppoing and the car would hardly move. The dealer told me i would need a new front end because my axle had broke. This is a 2001 mind you.
they told me that the right and left front 1/2 axle needed to be replaced as well as the front end assembly.
I am not a mechanic, but I was told by a friend that this is ridiculous and overkill...typical of dealer repair shops.
anyone have any advice or similar experience?
any help would be appreciated.

It's possible that the axle is broken. That's not a difficult thing to check. But go and find a good local independant shop and get them to fix it. It will be a lot cheaper.

With that discription of how and what happened, I'm more inclined to think something went wrong with the slide actuater and it only ingaged the splines a tiny bit. The pop was it letting go. Just my thought.

I don't know about your axle, but I'd have the metal checked out. My 2003 Dakota 4x4 just broke the rear driver's side by just bumping the curb in a slight spin on ice. The inside of the axle looks like large curd cottage cheese and it sheared off at approx. 5 mph. Anybody know about this?

While you were only going 5mph, the spinning wheel could have been going much faster. I saw a Chevy snap an axle like that, doing doughnuts in the snow in a parking lot and hitting the curb. A lot of stress there when a spinning wheel suddenly comes to a dead stop.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Actually the truck had to turn to avoid being hit by another vehicle during the ice storm. Police est. beginning of turn to be no more than 24 mph with the truck sliding and wheels (front and rear) were not turning because brake was being pumped and abs was working. This caused the truck to be at between 3-5 mph with a slow spin and then a slide over the curb in a half a block area. Rear wheel went over first then front wheel. This was very low, ice covered curb and about 1/4 inch of ice covering street.
I am now having trouble with the dealership because they have supposedly fixed the truck but are not giving it back. They are also refusing to give me my broken rotor, broken hub, axle, inner axle tube and housing so that I can take this to be tested. I've owned well over 500+ Dodge vehicles over past 30 years and owned my own business dealing with cars and trucks and have never seen anything like this until now. Seems like somthings up.

Have you seen these parts sitting there ? All of them? Might be there doing a parts/labor over charge and do not have all the parts that thay claim to have changed. If under warrenty, it really doesn't matter to me anyway. If not, you should be intitled to your old parts. Never seen an honest shop that wouldn't do this.
