Subject: HO cams or 206's?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys how invasive is a cam up grade (ie waranty), and does it make the truck louder?? I don't know much about them I've seen lots of posts and understand it's my next best mod. As I can't do it myself am I best to ask the dealer to do the HO upgrade or get a truck shop/ mechanic to put in the 206's.

Thx steve o 03 4.7 cc auto4x4, airaid intake and tb spacer, Dynomax Ultra flow, Superchips 3715>

I've read on this site that others have had a dealer (Jeep or Dodge) install the Jeep H.O. cams for the 4.7L, and not altered the warranty. The dealer has all the right tools and can verify proper operation.
Aftermarket cams, though.... Not sure.

doing a cam swap wont make your truck louder. now changing the exhaust will make it louder. I would go to a dodge dealership and ask them if putting the HO cams in will void my warranty. or call customer service and ask them. dont go by people on here saying. well I heard somewhere that it wont. things liek this I would get it from the horses mouth. also how will they know you have the HO cams in there. most techs couldnt tell a reg 4.7 cam from a HO cam lol. most of them just know how to plug the vehicle in to the computer and do what the computer tells them.

I don't understand why you'd have the dealer install the HO's, but a different mechanic for the 206's ? I did mine myself, but if you had the other mechanic install the HO's, the dealer would never know they're in there like Dark Jedi says. What they don't know about won't affect your warranty...

Exactly. Its one of those don't ask, don't tell things.

ONLY way they could tell would be to have a spec sheet, degree wheel and indicator...which they wouldn't do.

Pretty much everybody has the H.O. cams or have at one time now. Not a big deal, or gain without other mods. And with the price on them now it isn't worth it. You would be better off with the 206's for sure. You will just have to ask around till you find a shop you trust the work to.

HO's are a waste of time, if you're in there put in the 206's or 212's. I have run just about all of them and am currently on the 218's with HO valve springs.
Most shops will charge a good bit. One option is a Mustang place and give them the chain wedge tool instead of how they remove theirs. They (4.6SOHC) have to pull the tensioner and all the alternator/PS pump crap. A shop would charge at least $400 I'm sure. Best bet is to try and find the closet person that has done it before. I'd recommend the valve springs for 212's and up. They are a real beotch to install so keep that in mind for your cam purchase. Spring tool is hard to find.

If I knew how to do it myself I would!. Right now I'm a little hesitant, cost vs labour vs power. I'm still lovin the boost of the superchips 3715 but I want more. And I think the 206's would be the perfect addition. Right now at full throttle I'll sit and spin almost till second, when second hits I rocket. And I'm auto with LSD. The 206's would be awesome. The truck would almost have a muscle car feel. I need to find someone that has worked on dakota's. Will I need other mods to support the extra power? I know I'll want them anyway but will I "need" them? Thx guys> Those who take the greatest risk reap the greatest reward>

Hah, you haven't ridden in my 440 Belvedere. That torque shames my 4.7. I didn't see that you were 4x4, you will be in the lower revs more so 206's would be good, and you don't really need the valve springs for those, a big benefit of not going to the bigger cams. If I had to pay for labor on my rides, they would all be stock, sux.

Am I better off to wait and do heads, headers, and rocker rollers at the same time as the cams concidering I'm paying labour. Do these benifit the performance of the 206 cams or what is their purpose> I just like the performance, I have know Idea what the parts do. I'm a total novice. And will I need a "flash" even though I have the superchips tuner 3715??

Thx guys for helping a dumb brother out.

Steve O,

Where u live? If in Fla then get Marty at KRC to do it.

Y not stop at your local stealership and ask one of the mechs if he is interested in some side work, that way you get it done by someone with the right tools and familiar with your motor.

Ya I'm in ontario canada. A long way's away from KRC. Good idea though. If I was in fla or at least closer I'd take it there in a heartbeat> Should I just have the cam's installed or should I save and get the extra's while their in there. I'm sure their going to tell me to get rocker rollers etc cause they want the coin> I was just wondering about the importance of these parts for power and for longevity of the engine?

I doubt they'll tell you to get roller rockers for a 4.7 - if they do, don't do business with them. No need for special rockers with the 4.7.

I've just done some shopping and no one around here deals with KRC.I might have to look at some other options. Are there any other names out there that you guys would recomend for cams? Or is KRC the only way to go.??

Why would you go with a middle man who'd mark up KRC's prices instead of just ordering direct ? If you want to limit yourself to local, shouldn't you be asking them who they use ?

tell him jason from here sent you.
i just ordered ho cams from him.
206 cams from him are now $750. i think if you order them from krc at least you get ho springs. might want to weigh options if that's the case. last week i was gonna buy 206 and they were $650 but he was losing money at that price cause of having crane grind the cams and buying lash caps. n-e-way, ho cams are a nice gain for the money. i figure 206 is almost three times the gain from dyno charts i've seen but can't justify the money or understand the lash caps thing very well and how it relates to reliability. anyone else on that?

Thx for the advice. I'm going to bite the bullet and order the 206's myself from KRC.Does 4x4 make a difference in ordering or instalation> I think I've heard aprox 4-5hrs labour Yes? No? I've got a guy who will put them in. And I know everybody always asks but any idea what kind of numbers I'll be putting out with the cams??I could add up the numbers on the box's but I know they'd be BS I'm looking for actual numbers or guesses anyway, hp, tq, 1/4.>Thx again guys "this site" has been a great help.

well if your already changing the cams couldn't you just go ahead and change the springs if your already in there. I wouldnt think it would take much longer. I am not sure if they are included with the kits from krc. But if not you could always get the HO valvesprings
