Subject: Oil Pressure warning on 5.2liter motor
IP: Logged

Message:
While out driving the other day I accelerated to get out of the way of an on coming car. Afterward I realized the pressure had dropped and the check gage light came on.

Pulled over right away and I checked oil level and wiring leading to oil pressure sensor. Disconnected sensor and reconnected. Must have reset it cause truck ran good afterward.

I replaced sensor thinking it's faulty but light came back on after minute drive. Seems like acceleration triggers the error once the engine is hot.

Brought car to dealer and they diagnosed the problem to the engine block. The truck has 90000 miles and runs strong, no knocking, idles perfect, no smoke coming out the engine.

Is it possible that I need a new engine when the truck is running good? They suggested I replace upper plenum gasket and the oil pump.

I feel like the dealer is trying to rip me off at 6000.00 dollars to replace block alone. Is there anything else I could look into checking out.

90,000 on the engine should be a good clue the engine was/is a good one. If you have pinging and using oil in any amount then yes do the plenum gasket. The pump/oil screan is a no brainer. I have a question though. Where does the 6,000 dollor new engine come into play unless the dealer stated a new engine was a posibility after disasembled inspection. What you need to realize is this is an on going problem that just now became visible through your guage/warning light. What I'm saying is the oil preasure has been flucuating for some time untill it became bad enough to throw a code. untill you remove the pan and inspect the rods/mains, you actually do not know if engine damage was done or not. Also it is possible to have slight gulling to the babit on bearings with no damage as yet to the crank. Not likey but possible. Close inspection and a mike will tell the story. THe IMPORTANT THINK RIGHT NOW IS DO NOT DRIVE IT another inch till you resolve this problem.I truely hope you get lucky.

so many problems .... so little time

my check gages light has been coming on for along time now. when the light comes on the engine oil pressure gage drops to 0. my engine works fine and has a 154k on it. burns less than a q/t between oil changes and i redline shift the thing daily. i think your fine Anthony just make sure there is oil in the engine and that there is oil pressure and you'll be good to go. its just a idiot light!

My light came on a few times a couple weeks ago. I changed the oil and it hasn't happened again. That might just be coincidence, but you should at least try it. The only thing i could think of that would make changing your oil fix it, is if your oil filter has some blockage in it.

Hate to say it toolfan but were going to be reading about your truck in the obituaries sooner rather then later. Have to agree with you on one issue. It's just an idiot light. Also wishing you good luck. Thinking your going to need it

If it were mine I would check the oil pressure with a good mechanical gauge.

Wouldn't it clean any sludge off the oil pickup screen if he ran some engine cleaner through the engine. I'm talking about running it through with the oil in the crankcase.

I bet Anthony could get his dealer to do it for a reasonable price. Well, a lot cheaper than pulling the oil pan anyway!!!

Would pouring some Sea Foam in the oil dipstick clean out a clogged pick up screen?

I have realized a similar phenomenon recently, except mine occurs when I brake hard at speeds over 60 MPH. The light comes on before the gauage moves, and if you let off the brakes right away, it pops right back up. Where is the pickup at on the 318's? I was thinking that if it was in the rear of the pan, and without baffles, enough could have slid forward during braking to allow it to suck some air - dropping pressure.

Anyone else had the problem when stopping?

Yes it has happened to me while stopping a few times but it was a little low on oil. ilrocketboy has a good theory because i filled it back up and it hasn't happened since.
