Guys, I've got a 2000 QC 5.9 4x4. The temp get up to 260 or so before it seems the thermostat opens and goes back to 210 or so. I figured bad thermostat so replaced it but still acting the same. Thinking now it's the switch for the electric fan maybe? what do you guys think? I've never seen a vehicle with both an electric and a belt driven fan before.

I don't think your electric fan turns on for anything but the a/c. Since you replaced thermostat your problem is most likely the clutch fan not engaging when its hot, or a blocked/clogged radiator. Oh one more thing, did you leave the radiator cap off long enough to let all the air escape from the cooling system? You could have air in it.

yup, there was an air pocket in there, after a pressure test saw no trbl tried another test drive and the problem's gone. I didn't leave the cap off, didn't think about it. I'll be sure to do it next time I fill the radiator. It was weird, the air pocket made it act the exact same way as it did w/the bad thermostat in it.

glad it was an easy fix for you.
ucimaplaya2, the electric fan comes on with either the a/c(engine temp above 130 F) or when engine temp reaches 210F. it's not just for the a/c.

Good to hear it didn't cost you anymore than a tstat.
Dadddio, I didn't know that. But I guess it make sense since there are people running without the clutch fan at all. Maybe I will take my clutch fan off since I already have a 180 degree thermostat in it and give it a try. Im just a little concerned because FL summers get pretty hot.

i took my clutch fan about a year ago and run just the electric on my '00 QC 3.9. i live in south louisiana and i haven't had any problems at all and it gets plenty hot here in the summers. i also have a 195 tstat. just make sure your cooling system is up to snuff and i wouldn't tow anythinig without putting that clutch fan back on.
