Subject: Am I gettin reamed at the tranny shop?

I'm near KC, MO with major tranny problems, started slippin and whining all of a sudden. Found a tranny shop willing to talk over the phone, said it could be around $700 if it's what he thinks it is. Get it there and sure enough, twas a bad pump. Now I get to thinking about puttin in a better Torque converter and maybe even just doing a full rebuild for another $800-$900 (120K miles on the truck). Hell, it included a new converter, shift kit, and lubrication upgrades. So I ask about a rebuild and he said he will see if it NEEDS one, the rest of the parts may still be good in there. I call back later on and he found some of the gears are "melted" (probably warped), which aren't included in a normal rebuild. So now I am up to $1800 and he's almost got it all torn apart. Call back a few hours later, and he says the radiator failed the flow test (clogged), which could be why the pump went bad, so now I need a new radiator ($300 + giving me a break at $150 labor). So now I am up to $2400 or so. I really wanted to put in amsoil, so being an authorized dealer, I got it at wholesale $6/qt. He's also gonna change the diffs and transaxle at cost with no labor (decent benefit there), so I am leaning toward the gettin screwed and free labor on the diffs and transaxle even things out a LITTLE. Total thus far is around $2700 with Amsoil in the whole driveline. What has been your tranny shop experiences?

Thanks, 2000DakQC

Sounds like you should look around for a good trans. out of another dakota/durango with less miles on it. just sawp it out and be done, thats what i did with mine. change the fluid in your diffs. yourself, not too hard of a job.
