About 3 days ago, I noticed a real quiet ticking noise when I was pulling out of my driveway in the morning. It seemed to go away after I drove for about a mile or so. It did the same thing for about three days and I thought it did it because it was cold outside...

Yesterday I started it up and the ticking is so loud now it almost sounds like a cracking noise that is directly related to how fast or slow the engine is going. It runs normal, but there is a loud noise. It is coming from the drivers side of the engine compartment. It gets louder as I listen near my wheel well.

Could it be a hole in my exhaust somewhere that is getting larger as the days go on, or could it be my fuel injectors? The exhaust smelled really bad (i think i could smell it near the engine) and there was a lot of water coming out of my exhaust (because of the cold??)

I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7 liter with full time 4WD...

Smell the water coming out of your tailpipe .... if it smells sweet .. that would be rad fluid....check for a blown exhaust gasket at the head and also check the y-pipe connection... there is no gasket there.. its a flared fitting but I have seen them come loose before

While you're at it, check your oil. My son ran the oil low on his car, then suddenly it was too late.

Hmmmm,

I will go check the oil right now. I know the pressure looks fine, but that isn't really an indicator of oil being present.

After crawling under my truck just now, I noticed that my entire exhaust system is completely rotted out. I have 5 years and 140,000 miles on it. I also just noticed that there is a hole in my muffler!

Could a hole in the muffler be causing a noise up in the engine compartment (back pressure)??

After inspecting it, and seeing how rusted out it is, I see that I have to replace the whole exhuast system.

Any recommendations as to whether I should replace it with factory, replace it with aftermarket, or replace it with somethinng that sounds a "little meaner". I really like the way the exhaust sounds on the new Dodge Charger...

Definitly has oil! LOL

I have been getting crappier gas mileage lately too I think.

I cannot find a schematic of my exhaust system any where. Nearest as I can figure, there is the exhaust manifold, then a y pipe, then another pipe, then the cat, then another pipe, then the muffler???

For the life of me, I cannot find anyting other than a replacement "cat back exhaust system".

I only see Borla and Dynamax. Then I see a replacement muffler from Flomaster, but I don't see anyone that sells the y pipe or the cat or heat shields or anything for the 4.7 liter. I wanted to replace everything (except the manifold) since the whole system is all rusted to heck.

What would you guys do? I mean it seems like a "cat back exhaust system" is about $500. That probably wont fix my problem though, since the noise is coming from the front left side of the engine.

If it's louder on one side, it could either be the y-pipe or the manifold gasket right?

It could be something besides the exhaust system as well making this noise. A few days ago, it would go away as the truck warmed up, which makes me think it could be part of the exhaust that is loose when it's cold, but it has become so loud, I'm actually afraid to drive it. When I step on the gas (in park) the clicking noise gets pretty loud. I don't really have enough money to take it to Dodge right now. I would rather try and fix it myself with aftermarket parts...

:(

A cracked manifold will make a ticking sound and eventually sound more like a clacking noise. Myself, I work on my own truck, with the exception of exhaust systems. I've had the experiance of busting bolts, and putting them together correctly and if it's not done right, it could cost you air leaks, gas milage and performance. What would it cost to have an estimate done on it by a muffler and exhaust place?

Well, I'm taking it to Dodge on Wednesday. I'm hoping like hell that it's an exhaust problem :)

I am also considering adding on a Borla exhaust setup after I get this noise straightened out. I can't figure out which one I need though. For some reason they have the exhausts listed as 14871 "4 door quad cab" and 14900 as "4 door extended cab". I have the "2 door club cab". I also notice that all of their descriptions are "short bed". To my knowledge, the quad cab was the only one that came with the short bed "63 incher". I'm not sure which borlad I'd need.

I beleive I need the 14900 model for my 4.7 liter 2 door, AT, full time 4wd, normal sized bed, but that is a problem for me to worry about another day.

If anyone is interested, I'll post what the problem was with my truck on Wednesday night after the dealer gives me the news...

U R Probably right. The 2005 was the 1st one that came out with the Dakota using the Suicide doors that I know of. It would have been nice to have suicide doors on my 99R/T CC. I do, however, recommend that you get yourself a Haynes book for your Dakota. They have a nice trouble shooting section in there.
