Subject: 5.9 or 4.7?

I dont quite know yet but I'm toying with the idea of buying a new Dakota. Now I have a 2000 QC 4x4 with a V6. I want one with a V8 but I dont know which one. Either one would be automatic because I hate manuals on long trips and traffic. Which would be able to tow more, do better off road and give some satisfaction of accelaration cuz my V6 doesn't make the cut in accelaration? As I understand it there is only 1mpg difference, but I'm not too concerned about that. So, 5.9L or 4.7L?

Well that's an easy one 5.9L, more power, and better for towing. I plan on getting the 4.7L only cuz you cant get a 5.9L in a cc. 4.7L people I'm not meaning to sound like I'm dogging the 4.7L because I know it'll hold it's own. but I'm just being with the guy.

Good luck Bryan

5.9L lots of low rpm power, don't need to wind it up to go fast

4.7L lots of high rpm power, likes a certain rpm level for speed

I bet the would both tow about the same, unless you wanted speed while towing.

If you were getting a lighter truck I would say go for the 4.7, but the truck you want would probably run better with the 5.9. There is also more aftermarket parts for the 5.9.

Good Luck

I'll say this again the only way a 4.7 is even equal to the 5.9 is with the 5-speed. If you are getting an automatic and don't care about gas mileage then the 5.9 is better. It would be more then a 1 mpg difference I bet, but who knows, it may depend a lot on how you drive it. Just go drive both, the dealer should have both available to test drive, QC 4x4's are probably the best selling Dakotas out there right now and 80% of them have a V-8 and automatic. Just make sure both have the same final gearing or you could get a false impression.

I have the 5.9 in a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab. It is excellent. I have the 5.2 in a '99 Club Cab. The 5.9 gets better gas mileage than the 5.2. And has gobs of power. I don't know much about the 4.7. Lots of people say it is underpowered by I can't say.

I have a 4.7L 3.92 geared 5spd LS CC 4x2 and it'll pull a 20ft aquasport off the ramp without spinning the tires. Out on the highway I can cruise comfortably at 70 mph if i want to (though I usually go slower for safety reasons). I live in Florida though so the biggest hills I have to travel are the boat ramp and the on ramps to the interstate. The gas mileage doesn't drop all to radically either. At 55 it drops to about 14. Which isn't that bad considering whats behind it.

look @ the specs of the 2 i'm sorry an add'l 10-15 hp and 20-30ftlb of torque isn't going 2 create a huge difference in power or performance numbers. anybody object 2 that? please drop me a line.

But do you need the torque if you have the right gears? With 3.92's, all I have to do is put the trany in 1st, let the clutch out slow and almost let the truck idle the boat up the ramp. 1st gear with 3.92's is super low.

I have a 2000 QC with 5.9 and 3.92s. Recently drove from Nebraska to New York. Averaged 14.5 mpg. Having the extra torque was great in the Adirondacks, there was never a loss of power. I'd never go back to 4.7

The 4.7 is a good engine, but does lack the low end torque for towing. I drove a 5.9 Durango R/T and it towed excelllent. When accelerating it didn't feel as if the trailer was even behind it. Going up steep hills it rarely shifted. The gas milage wasn't very good compared to the 4.7. My Dakota 4.7 gets around 18avg, with about 21mpg @ 70mph.

I have a 2000 Club Cab 4X4 with the 4.7. I like it a lot and have no reason to believe I'd be better off with the 5.9. I get about 18 mpg on the highway and maybe 12 in town (with automatic). Lots of power IMO. I'd probably suggest driving both and see what fits your needs. No wrong decision here.
