Subject: 03 4.7 Dakota ?'s

My company truck is an 03 Dakota CC, 2wd, 4.7 w/auto and around 89k miles. I've got a couple questions. I heard at the time I ordered this truck that the trans tends to "go out" between 88-92k miles. Has anyone heard/experienced this first hand? And second, I might be interested in buying this truck from the leasing company when it's time is up. I am the only driver of it and have been since I took delivery in January of 03 and have been "anal" regarding the scheduled maintenance. Unfortunately, they don't tend to get rid of them until they've hit around 120k miles. I've done some minimal searching for parts, mods, info, etc for the Dakota w/4.7L. I don't see a whole lot of performance oriented parts/subject material regarding the 4.7L. WTF? Am I looking in the wrong places or is there just no aftermarket support for this engine. I'm not looking for 600rwhp here (although, that would be nice!) just something I might be able to go out and play with once in a while and keep the ricers with their fart tubes and horsepower adding sticker kits at bay with. Mabye dust off a lightning or two with??? I am an experienced wrench I'm just not willing to spend thousands for bolt-ons and only pick up 30 hp. Any guidance would be appreciated

the 4.7 has only been out for 5 to 6 years. yo uhave to give it time. the 318 and 360 has been out sense the dawn of time so these will have the most aftermarket parts for it. they are starting to come out with them but its slow and can cost some serious coin. I would do cams, gears superchip programer and should yeild some decent numbers. I would watch nitros as a guy I saw blew his intake manifold from too big of a shot. those plastic intakes makes nice lil peices lol.

look at www.krcpreformance.com they have some aftermarket 4.7 parts. I think they just got done with a 4.7 that pushes 500HP. also try http://www.socaldakotas.com/cgi-bin/storefront.cgi

another store I heard of.

I haven't heard of the tranny's going out like routinely. But I'm sure you WILL find someone who has had one die. Anything will have failures. Other than that, take it from me. The electronic tranny just BLOWS AWAY the 46RE.

I know I may be flamed, but I like it and so do MOST people who actual HAVE that tranny themselves.

the 4.7 automatic is a very good transmission. I test drove 4-5 w/ that auto and they all shifted excellent. The cool thing is w/ a superchips tuner you can change your shift points because it is controlled by the PCM. Even though it's not as "strong" as the 46RE, I like my 44RE because it has a good first gear ratio for the jump off the line. I also have the 3.91 LSD which helps especially in 4wd. BTW I have the 5.2 but would have gotten the 4.7 but the dealer wouldn't budge on the price. I got a great deal on mine and am very happy.

What kind of parts are you looking for ? You won't see ignition upgrades as our coil on plug ignition is already superior. There are some cam upgrades out there (many of us swapped in the cams from the Jeep HO motor) and the 4.7 responds well to more ignition advance (many of the guys like the superchips). Lower gears help too.
I haven't heard what you say about the tranny - only about 50,000 miles here, but that includes towing and plowing - and it still shifts like new.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
