Subject: ? on starter on older 360
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 360 biult and stroked to a 408. I have a pair of flowtechs shorty headers and i'm having problems with the aftermarket mini starters bigger silanoid(can't spell that). Anyways, I could only find 1 starter besides the standard 1. The one I have has 4 different places to turn it so it can clear the headers and block but no matter what way its turned it hits. I need a little help from you guys that know a more than me. I was going to put the standard 1 on but i'm afraid it won't last 1 startup but i could very well be wrong. The motor is around 550hp.

Standard for a 1976 360, or standard for a 1999 360? There are differences in the starters used over the 3 decades the 360 was produced. When you say "older 360" I'm thinkin' of the LA variety, or do you mean older Magnum? If a Magnum, or even a late 80's LA, the starter is smaller, and has a built-in heat shield. You can also get a thermal wrap for the starter if needed. Are you concerned about heat damage, or killing the starter with the larger engine?

Sorry for not explaining better. The motor is a 76 year model 360. I'm a little worried about the heat knowing that the starter is touching the headers so i think that the standard one should still be pretty close. Like you said though they do have the heat wrap for the starters. That would solve my problems on the starter overheating. The reason i'm really worried about though is the compression of the bigger motor and if it was to kick back on the starter it would break it everytime. I've never had a mopar before i've just had alot of GM and i know there huge standard starters are crap. They are like $35 and everytime a good amount of compression in the motor and everytime they kick back they break of shread the gears. I have broke the gear, and gear housing, and even broke the 2 gears inside the starter. Thanx for the help so far, and anymore help would be great. Maybe i have explained it a little better...lol.

get a Magnum starter from a late model dakota or ram. It's a strong mini-starter right from the factory and will bolt to all LA-B-R/B motors.

i'm currently using the factory starter from my 1998 V6, on my big block that's in the truck now.

Even my '89 Dak came with the smaller, more powerful starter not unlike the newer units.

1) Take a hammer to the headers :)

and/or

2) Wrap the headers with header wrap. That will also help retain the heat in the headers for better flow and protecty the starter and other nearby components like spark plug wires...

If the headers where the cheaper black pair i would just beat them back a little bit and be done with it. I will have the truck in shows and i don't really want to cut up the headers or beat them up. I don't really want to wrap them up either. Thats a good ideal though GRAPHITE on the header wrap but because the headers are coated i can really only go with the wrap for the starter.

Does anyone know what the torque specs are on the 4.7 starter. Intense was right...it fits fine but i'm still unsure about the starters foot lbs of torque. The one i had that wouldn't fit was 240 foot lbs.

Why is the engine kicking back this hard anyway > Really heavy compression can actually stop a starter from sending a piston to full compression but each and every pistin would be the same > Basicly all you would sort of hear is a grunt, then nothing > actual kick back is a timing problem > Can be in the cam setup or distributer > or both > myself I would try retarding the spark some > If it starts then you need a timing retarder for starting providing you really do need all that advance > Reguardless of what ends up causing your problem I would be looking for a gear reduction starter for that beast > AND > Rather then doing a mickey mouse repair on an auto you intend to show , mark that header and get some professional help to change the design to work as intended on your show car > A job done right is the only one you can be really proud of > Good luck

Thanks for the help. The motor is on the run stand but not running yet and i need a good starter that if we get a little off time while doing this that it will not kick back and break. The 4.7 starter is some kind of gear reduction starter. The motor is being done by a professional but i have a $500 set of headers that i don't really want to cut. He did mention that it probably would not be seen and if this 4.7 starter doesn't turn this high compression motor over very good i will end up doing some cutting.

Sounds like to much total advance timing on a locked out distributor system. Need to put the coil on a momentary switch to get the motor spinning then release to crank. I have seen MOPAR stock starters spin 16:1 motors with out any problem with the addition of a momentary switch on the coil. And you say it is 550 hp, so you are more in the low compression end like 11:1, so a stock starter will do the trick.

Later,

Thanx for the help guys. OLD FOOL... I'm only 10:1 maybe a little more with my heads. I'll go with the 4.7 mopar starter.
