I have a 98 Dakota with a 318 and it seems to be burning oil. I've talked to several people and some (dealers/mechanics) say it's a quirk of the 318's and they do that, not to worry while others say get rid of it while you can. It goes through maybe a quart in 700 miles of hard driving. Any thoughts about this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Russ

That's rediculous. I've owned two trucks wqith the 318 in them, a 92 and a 95. My 01 has a 5.9, so basically the same design as the 318. None of them ever burned that much oil. In the summer if I was working it hard the '95 would burn a quart every 3500-4000 miles. The rest of the time I changed oil every 5000 miles and never added any.

My '01 5.9 (360) has almost 75K miles on it. It burns about 1/3-1/2 qt every 5,000 miles.

Russ don't worry i burn the same if really hard on it. i have 153k and the truck runs great. who is telling you to sell it while you can? the 318 is a great motor. i did go 3,500m with only checking it twice and had less than 2qts in it when i change the oil. i just check the oil 5 or 6 times in between oil changes and poor in what it needs. if the oil pick up is still sucking oil than stuff is being oiled.

and some mods to slow it down!

Yep, likely a leak. My 318s used 1 quart every 3000 miles regular. Did have a slant six blow a rear crank seal, but then it used a quart every 100 miles until I had it repaired.

If it is burning the oil you should notice BLUE smoke from the tailpipe and smell it too. For hard work in warm temps I would try bumping up the oil viscosity to a 15W40.

quig, check the belly pan gasket. With the engine off, remove the airhat from the throttle body, open the throttle and look down into the manifold with a flaslight. If you see any oil puddling in there change the belly pan gasket.
