I have never used Amsoil in my truck but I can tell you they make fantastic products. Back when I raced motocross, I was sponsored by Amsoil for a season. They were cheap jerks about giving me free product, but the stuff I got was great. I was able to almost double the top end life on my engines (2 stroke of course) and their gear case oil gave me way better clutch performance and life. I continued to use their oils on my bikes even after the sponsorship fell apart.

Come to think of it, I should start using it in my truck.

I also heard they make a great product. only prob I have is. its hard to find a dealer. when you do find one they charge an arm and a leg for a qt. I will just use either M-1 5w-30 or German castrol 0w30 (even though its harder to find the green colored one)but when amsoil becomes more common and pick it up at a store. I will buy some. untill them. dont want to mess with the hassle of ordering it on line and wait for it to come in.

It's good stuff of course...they invented synthetics. Too much of a pain though to get..seems somewhat like a multi-level/Amway/marketing gimmick. I like things simple..I go to Wally World and pick up some Mobil 1 and I'm good to go. No waiting and it's less expensive. 1 gallon for $20.

I'd say that AMSOIL was probably the first to enter into the market with syn oil for commercial/civilian use. Anyways, after stalking around these boards for a month since buying my 4.7L 2000 Dak, I think I have been convinced to swap out my oil, rear diff, and ATF fluid with AMS. This truck has to last me for well over 5 years, and I think AMSOIL is the way to help ensure that. That.. and I am probably one of the most paranoid people in the world about my vehicles.

Steven, do we put you as a dealer reference anywhere when we place our order on the AMSOIL website? To all you current Dak owners, roughly how many quarts of transmission fluid would it take to do a total flush of a 45rfe transmission? How many quarts to swap out the 3.55 rear differential fluid? Thanks!

HISTORY OF SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS and AMSOIL

AMSOIL developed the first synthetic motor oil to pass American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements in 1972, and the first company to market synthetic oils for passenger vehicles.

AMSOIL FOUNDER --- A.J. Amatuzio coined the phrase "extended oil drain intervals" back in 1972 with the introduction of AMSOIL 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil, formulated for 25,000-mile/one-year drain intervals.

Not only was AMSOIL motor oil the first synthetic oil to pass American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements, AMSOIL INC. was the only motor oil company promoting oil drains beyond 3,000 miles.

__________________________________________________

One of the transforming developments of the last century was the discovery of the process of organic synthesis, the combining of the raw materials of production into a nearly limitless array of plastics, films, fabrics and fluids. By understanding the geometry of organic compounds, chemists could create customized molecular designs to achieve preconceived objectives. Scientists realized that they could actually improve the characteristics of items found in nature.

One by-product of this process has been the development of synthetic motor oil. It is believed that the first synthesized hydrocarbons were created by Friedel & Crafts in 1877 using Aluminum TriChrloride as the catalyst. Yet it wasn't until 1929 that the commercial development of synthesized hydrocarbons was undertaken by Standard Oil of Indiana. Not surprisingly there was a lack of demand for the new product and this first marketplace introduction of synthetic lubricants was commercially unsuccessful.

Eight years later the first PAO, a synthetic product using olefin polymerization, was manufactured. 1937 was also year that the Zurich Aviation Congress became interested in ester based lubricant technology. From 1938 to 1944 thousands of esters were evaluated in Germany with excellent results. In our own country ester basestocks were also being developed by the United States Naval Research Laboratory and introduced into military aviation applications during the 1940's.

During this period scientists were well funded, and the new processes of synthetic creation had some great success. But as is so often the case, the existence of a "better mousetrap" does not always result in its commercial survival.

It was the space age that helped create a greater appreciation for the benefits of synthetic lubricants. Jet engines raised the bar on what was required of a lubricant. The high speed, high heat and cold temperature performance requirements of modern jets created a demand for a new kind of lubricant.

Just after the war we saw the first use of diesters by the British in turboprop engines for high temperature performance. And from the late forties to the early seventies various synthetic fluids were developed to meet the demands of new and more efficient high performance engines and machines.

Because of the self-evident cold weather benefits of synthetic jet engine oil, it would not have been difficult to find a few maverick pilots experimenting with this oil in their cars. The military paid thirty-five dollars a quart for synthetic oil in those days and even the used jet engine oil seemed clean enough for some pilots in Alaska and elsewhere to mix with their motor oil to assist cold winter starts.

One such experimenter took a more systematic approach. In the mid-1960's, Lt. Col. Albert J. Amatuzio (the Founder of Amsoil), jet fighter squadron commander at a northern Minnesota airbase, likewise had become familiar with these "extra ordinary" lubricants that protected the engines of the jets he flew. He began a research project that eventually became his life work and second career.

At first, Amatuzio's efforts were aimed at improving the performance of petroleum oil.
Eventually, Amatuzio realized the need to begin with a synthetic basetock and build his ideal lubricant from the ground up. His search led him to Monsanto, Drew Chemical Corporation and Hatco. It was Drew Chemical Corporation in Boonton, New Jersey, where the first polyol esters had been developed and patented in conjunction with Mobil Chemical in 1958. Mobil Oil's Jet Engine Oil II was based on the fluids produced at Drew Chemical.

The truth is, automobiles put even more stress on a lubricant than jet engines because air aspirated car engines must deal with dirt and the messy by-products of combustion. The problem was how to bring the expanded temperature range performance, wear protection and service life of a synthetic into an automotive setting. Amatuzio believed he had found a way.

After several more years of fine tuning his formulation, AMZOIL (Amatuzio's-oil) was created and became the first 100% synthetic diester based engine oil to pass the API sequence tests and receive API qualification in 1972.

By the mid-nineties nearly every oil company carried a high end synthetic motor oil in its product line, though only a few companies seem truly dedicated to promoting them. Nevertheless, synthetic lubricants are currently the fastest growing segment of the oil industry.

If you'd rather email the info to me then that is fine, or you can feel free to post it here as a reference to others doing the same thing I am. For anyone thinking of changing their own fluids (DIY) ...

Helpful Differential Fluid Recommendations:

-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives.

-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.
__________________________________________________

Changing Your Transmission Fluid in 12 EASY Steps:

1. Make sure the fluid is warm. Warm up your Dakota so the transmission is at normal operating temperature. Pull the transmission dipstick. Fresh fluid is translucent and cherry red. Some darkening is normal, but if it is reddish brown or mustard color and smells like burnt varnish, it is worn out.

2. Drain the fluid by loosening the pan. Select the correct filter replacement based on pan shape and prepare a large pan to catch the fluid. Then loosen each pan bolt a turn or two and loosen one corner more than rest. Drain mostly from this corner.

3. Finish removing the pan and any gasket material from the pan or case. Avoid scratching the metal and make sure the pan’s gasket surface isn’t bent or distorted.

4. Remove the old filter. Most transmission filters are held in place with a bolt or two, but some are held by a clip. Be careful to include O-Rings or other seals.

5. Install a new filter. Use the clips or bolts from the old filter. Be sure O-Rings, etc. are in place. If the filter has a long intake neck, gently push the neck into place without unseating the O-Ring.

6. Clean the pan thoroughly. Inspect the pan before cleaning. A small amount of fine grey clutch dust is normal. However, if you find metal shavings, there has been transmission damage. Clean the pan with solvent and wipe dry so there is no harmful residue.

7. Position gasket on pan. Some gaskets have four holes slightly smaller than the rest to allow four bolts through the pan and through these smaller holes to hold the gasket in place.

8. Hand tighten pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern. After that, use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to proper ft-lbs as per manufacturer.

9. Refill the transmission using only the amount shown as “refill capacity” in the owners manual or "AMSOIL Product Selection Guide,” using the type of fluid specified for the vehicle.

10. If doing only a partial fluid replacement, skip to instruction 12 below. If doing a complete fluid replacement, follow the steps in instruction 11.

11. You now have replaced the fluid in the pan. To replace the fluid in the torque converter and oil cooler also, follow these steps.

-- Step 1. Obtain the total system capacity of the vehicle from the manufacturer or AMSOIL. Have this amount readily available.

-- Step 2. Disconnect the oil cooler line from the oil cooler. As you may not know which is the pressure side and which is the return side, have both directed so the stream of fluid will be directed toward a receptacle.

-- Step 3. With another person, be prepared to add ATF to the fill area as it is being pumped out of the oil cooler line.

-- Step 4. Start the engine, and as the old fluid is pumped out, add fresh fluid to the pan.

-- Step 5. When either the fluid color brightens or the total capacity has been replaced, shut the engine off and re-attach the oil cooler line. All fluids has now been changed.

12. Recheck the fluid level. With the truck on level ground, set the parking brake and the transmission in “Park” or “Neutral.” Let the engine idle for a few minutes. Shift the transmission into different positions before returning the lever to “Park” or “Neutral.” Check the fluid level again and check for leaks.
