the check engine light came on the other day. Did the key thing and came back with P0440. Did some research and it's the Emission Evac System. Anyone else encounter this one and if so what do you do? Just check the whole system? Could it be PCV?

check your gas cap. a loose or faulty gas cap will throw this code.

I checked the cap and it's on tight. how can you clear the code? Will it take time to correct if it's the gas cap?

Paul,

Just because the gas cap feels tight, it can still have a bad seal. It is the cheapest way to troubleshoot this code. Buy an aftermarket gas cap, not one from the dealer. Disconnect the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes. Put the new gas cap on and reconnect the battery cable. The code should be gone. If it does come back, go to Autozone as was stated in the above post. They will check the codes for free and let you know what is wrong. Depending on how many miles you have on the truck, it could be O2 sensor. They normally go about 80K, but can go sooner.

Rico,

After turning your vehicle off, turn the key to the on position three times without actually starting the vehicle. On the third turn, keep it in the on (aux) position. If there is a problem, a code or codes of PXXXX will flash by your odometer. When it is complete, the word DONE will appear. These codes can be cross referenced to tell what is the problem with the vehicle.

Alright, bought Fram gas cap at Kragen for $5.89. Istalled, cleared code, started truck and ran for 15 minutes. No code yet. We'll see. If I wasn't so lazy I'd put the old gas cap back on and see if it throws a code again, maybe some day.

Well Paul, if it doesn't come back, consider it the cheapest repair for a code you'll ever make to your Dak.

If it wasn't for this site, a lot of people would be making their local Dodge dealer rich.

I was thinking the same thing. Someone who doesn't have the resources or know how would bring the truck into the dealer for a MIL. the dealer would charge you out the @$$ to replace a gas cap and some "other stuff" pertaining to the "Emissions Evac System". BS!

My MIL lit up lsat Friday, I got the same code. The code is "Evac leak detected - Smoke Sys". I have no idea what the "smoke" part means but I started nosing around under the hood and found a tear in a vacuum hose right at the canister. I replaced it but still had to pull the battery cable to clear it.

Paul.
Depending on your fuel system configuration, there might be a vapor recovery canister just in front of your gas tank. Check those hoses as well.
