Subject: Can't find transm for '90 Dak in Atlanta
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wondering if another vehicle used the same transmission as the 90 dakota. Does anyone know? If so, would anyone recommend getting one from any other vehicle than a dakota or is it too different?

Also, plan B, if I have to have mine rebuilt, how much should I expect to pay? ball park? It's out, already, sitting next to the truck, now can't find one to put in.

Thanks!
U

So, hey, is the same tranny and the same engine in each 10 years or so of dakota's ? And does any other model of dodge use the same eng & trns.
I remember back when I was into datsun z cars that the same engine in the z was used in the maxima. The same engine in the truck was used in 3 other nissans and they made those same engines for 50 years, I think. Is dodge the same way? Does it not matter if I don't find a 1990 Dakota part because the same part was used for 50 years??
Sorry I don't know much about Dodge. Just bought a work truck with a bad transmission ;(
Thanks for your help!

Hay Vern, Thanks for the info. What is the o/d?
And also, do you how I can find out for sure what year? If the 90 doesn't had the computer controls, I'm sure it'd be messed up too.
I'm glad to see that you guys seem to really like the Dakota. It's a good truck, huh? Good! Now if I can just get it fixed, I can check it out for myself. Bought it at an auction, really cheap (guess the trans is why). But the reason I wanted it was cuz it has a heavy duty lift on the back instead of a tail gate... and it's a long bed too, good for hauling.

o/d = overdrive. Did you check with car-part.com as daddio suggested ? Usually the salvage yards know what interchanges.

Yes I did, but thanks anyway for posting that list. It makes it much more convenient!
And I DID I write back, to Daddio, telling what happened at pull-apart that caused all the frustrations... a really long post... But then I clicked to submit it... but didn't realize I also had to click to post it... so I guess no one ever saw it. Or did it just send an email, maybe and not post?
I DID find that C&L is closest to me, even looked at the map, but then, since I'm so price driven, because I have to pay someone every time they put the trans on and take it off, I started wondering if this $700 trans at C&L isn't the same kind I would get at pull-apart, except the price is 600 bucks more... (THEY probably just went and pulled the part form that dakota on the pull-apart lot!) If it's not a rebuilt one, if they just went to pull apart and got it, (cuz it has the same guarantee as pull-apart) why buy pay 700 for it instead of 70 bucks? Especially since I have to pay each time it gets pulled and put on?
So I'm back to the start. Just gotta get someone to pull one at pull apart, then if it's no good, pull another one... and it that's no good, pull another one... dang! I found a guy who'll charge me $75 each time he pulls one off and $90 everytime he puts one on... but he told me, if it's no good, it'll cost me 75 to pull it back off mine, and 75 to pull another one and 90 to put it back on...etc. etc etc...... Whether I pay $700 for it or $70.
So I really wanted to find a REBUILT one for 700, and KNOW that it's a good one, from the start... and HAVE a truck again, ya know?
I don't think any of those places on that list have rebuilt one's do they? CL says that they do test them, but is that enough?
What would YOU do?

i helped a friend buy one from someone we found through car-part.com for an explorer. the place had it pulled and shipped with a six month warranty for 350 bucks. the place was in shreveport la and shipped to lafayette la.

it they won't warranty it don't buy it. try car-part again and search the whole country. a lot of these guys ship and take credit cards and warranty their stuff. it will just take a little effort. besides if you find a palce you want to buy from you can check out their reputation on www.bbb.com (Better Business Bureau)
