Ok here goes... When I was doing my HO cams I noticed that at the end of one of my exhaust manifold bolts the aluminum was cracked (factory bolt was too long I guess). So I was able to remove 2 of the 3 loose pieces of aluminum. The third chunk (approx 1/8" - 1/4" cube) fell into the oil drain back hole in the head. Looking at the block this seems to go straight down to the crankcase. It did fit past the head gasket as it is no longer in the head and I did drive the truck a few miles with no noises or oil pressure problems...

So what do you think am I safe? I am pretty sure it is in the pan but due to the lip in the pan it won't fall out when I change my oil (already tried this once).

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris.

FWIW to prevent oil from coming out through that exhaust bolt I put some RTV on it and put it back in.

A magnet won't do you much good, but a good flush will more than likely dump the goodies where you want.

If it still doesn't show, I'd start diggin. The pans are no fun to remove either. :)

If it got by the head-gasket. Is there another restriction that would prevent the chunk from making it all the way to the pan?

If it is in the pan I am happy... then it'll probably come out with an oil change eventually.

Have you checked your filter?

How big was the piece of material that made its way in the hole?

The chunk of aluminum was a pretty good size. I would say about 1/4" cube give or take a little bit.

I just ran the truck at 2500 RPM for about 10 mintues in the yard to make sure oil pressure stayed up (not atarving the pick-up). So far so good.

Wonder if it got caught in the bed plate or something. WHo knows. As long as it don't get caught up in something you may never have a problem.

The person to ask would be BILLY WHITE (I think his name is) who works at KRC and frequents the boards.

Or just call KRC performance.

Here's something to try.
Warm engine, park facing uphill and let the oil cool so it can be drained. With oil plug out, take your pinky finger and carfully feel around the bottom of the pan. Don't get pinky stuck in oil drain hole. If you could'nt catch the chunk, Take a semi-flexible wire and bend a hook on one end. Go fishin'. If you don't catch it then you've got two choices. Pull the pan looking for something that may have gotten caught somewhere else, or don't sweat it.
I've seen some pretty big chunks of carbon, gasket, and other stuff on oil pickups. If it's stuck pretty good and does'nt block oil flow it's really not a big deal. But if it blocks the pickup you will need to drop the pan. Also if it goes through the screen (not likely) it will chew the oil pump up.
Hope this is some help to ya.

Sorry I'm late fellas, the windage tray probably has it lodged, so pull the pan and tray till you find it. And all pieces fit back into the original spot. Any free particles are not just prey for the oil pump, but 75% they get smacked by the crankshaft and create more problems. Later!

That is true abut the crank, I spaced that one.
But I've torn down some that have had major pieces of junk in them and been suprised that they did'nt do that.
On a funny note theyre usally a SBC that came out of a two barrel pickup, that some "I know what im doin" redneck has a single plane and 650 double pumper on.
Gas in the oil usally spins the bearings on them too.
