Message:
I am just getting ready to go out and install my new HO cams, but there is some rust on them. I wouls day not terribly bad but to the point I am at least concerned. There is also rust in the bearing journals too. Should I risk it? I see no mention about not using rusty cams in my maintence manual. The cams were still as mopar packaged them. Thoughts? I was thinking to use them and jsut change the oil after abotu 10 or 15 miles of driving to get the rust off of there...

Or shoudl I be cleaning the rust off with say a a scotchbrite pad, 400 grit sandpaper, etc?

Thanks,
Chris

Rusty HO cams are pretty common. You could clean them up a bit but just be careful not to over do it. DMC must have had a cost cutting program to not use any corrosion inhibitor on their parts after production. My cams had a bit of surface rust here and there. I didn't have much rust in any of the areas that really mattered so, I just made sure the rusted areas were smoothed and installed them. Over 40,000 miles later, I've had no problems. (knock on wood!)

just use a fine emory cloth to clean it up. that sould get the rust off without causing any prob on the cam its self.

Mine were a little rusty. I just got some shop rags and oil and scrubbed most of it off. I have 5,000 on the cams now and no problems yet

Mine were also a little rusty. I was quite disappointed with this, but cleaned mine up with some 1000grit paper. Fine steel wool would work well also.

Be sure to clean them inside and out before installing them!!

No, don't use steel wool to clean it with. That'll embed the steel wool molecules into the metal on the cams and cause accelerated corrosion.

Great Scott!

When those embedded steel wool molecules, come in contact with the metal from another universe, you better warm up your flux capacitor!

Actually, when everyone was doing this back in late 01 and 02, everyone, including me, found some surface rust on the lobes. I think I wiped it off with some oil (synthetic of course), J/K on the type of oil.

Now if the dino oil residue, comes in contact with the dino oil, coming from millions of years ago........

You'll like the fulltime, minor but significant changes the HO's (uh, huh huh huh, he said HO) will get you.

229rwhp / 300 rwlb-ft with my old truck... Good memory Bill.

So with this one being a 4wd it will be a little less but my truck just needs more under the hood so I am not pushing it so much as I am used to my Mustang now... But oterwise the mods are the same: Gibson catback, CAI (same one), ported 68mm TB, no mechanical fan, HO intake (well the stock one on the '03, it was an HO on the '00).

We'll see.

I did get them cleaned up and installed yesterday but I found a vacuum line that was broken (looks like it was cut and it was at the dealer recently), and I broke the PCV. So it is to fix both of these, run it a bit more, change the oil immediately (due to the rust) then put another few hundred miles on it and change oil and filter (current oil and filter are only 250 miles old).

Thanks Guys!
Chris

Chris,

my memory is not as good as Bill's,

What truck, motor, mods?

Those are like the same #'s, on my 01, 4.7, HO cams and intake, yadda, yadda, and a SC's on 93octane.

It was a 2000, 4.7l, NV3500, 3.90 gears, 2wd CC.

I had an air intake kit (not cold air), Bosch +4 plugs, HO intake and cams, Gibson cat-back, pre-cats still in place, ported (by me) 68mm '01 TB, no mechanical fan and I think that's it.

So it was just a fairly basic combo...

Chris

Maybe some CLR might help instead of using and abrasive to remove the rust.
Just a thought and my .02$
