Subject: 4.7L For 2.5L engine Swap
IP: Logged

Message:
Help me out if you can guys. i just baught a 2001 4.7L out of a new dak...and i'm going to drop it in place of my 1998 2.5L P.O.S. i have the engine, 5-speed manual tranny, wiring harnesses, computer, exhaust back to the Y-pipe, engine mounts and a few other things. This is the first time i'm going to be doing a mod this massive. Does anyone have any advice on this issue and also any info on where i can find some sort of make shift guide that i can read up on to help me through my venture. i'm going to buy the 1998 and 2001 Chrysler shop manuals to better envision my project. but other then that i've never done this....HELP!!

thanx ahead of time....dipak

Make sure you don't have any cracks in the frame, the front-end can fly out from under-neath you.

You might want to try better suspension, the 4.7 weighs alot more than the 2.5.

You also need a V8 torque converter, this will keep the rear-end from fly off the first-time you white smoke it.

I just did the swap from a 3.9 to a 5.2 in a 91 auto 4-speed. That was all of the stuff I had to do to keep stuff from breaking.

You might want to consider doing this with the entire front clip off of the truck. I used to make a cardboard mok-up or I would use a urethane mok-up of the engine and drive train. You will probably need to modify the floor pan a little, the cross member, drive shaft length and possably the oil pan. There will be alot of little problems that will pop up as you go! I used to put American V8's into Japanesse Trucks. I always had to custom make adapter to fit the Jap T/Case to an american trans, I always had to custom make brackets to keep the Jap accesories. You will not have this problem! You might need to make an egine craddle and some motor mounts. P.S. I almost forgot about cooling system!!! Make sure you leave some space between the engine and fire wall. If air can not flow around the rear of the engine it distrubts air flow through the radiator and can cause over heating.

It should be plug and play , it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a 4.7 truck around to look at for reference but it should not be that hard of a swap. The only thing I would be concerned about is if you have a 7 1/4 rear , I have seen a few 4 cyl Dakotas with these and they usually have a hard time behind those , if you have a 7 1/4 you will need to find a 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 to swap in.

well great ideas so far. i think i have most of them covered. its a 4.7L out of a 2001 dakota...from what the dealer told me all i would have to worry about is the mounts, which i have, the cooling system (i'm looking for a larger sized radiator and i've already baught an electric fan), drive shaft(kinda lost there), and about the rear end...got it covered already. i have the 9-1/2 posi i baught to stick in there with the 3.92 gears. keep them rolling in, this really helps me alot. thanks again guys, man i'm glad i found this site....dipak

The one thing that is gonna be a pain in the a$$ is if the 2.5 pcm has a rev limiter, if so if will confuse the hell out of the 4.7. The rev limiter counts pulses, not rpms. Since it does this it will count more pulses and enable itsself at a lower speed and a lot lower rpm than it used, the 4.7 will produce twice as many pulses as the 2.5, this means that it will screw stuff up. Get the right computer asap, I know this from experiance. I am using a 3.9 pcm on a 5.2, this means 2 more pulses per second, this means this rev limiter enables at 60 instead of 85 in 3rd gear. Pisses me off!

You might also want to get a 4.7 radiator to keep from overheating, I had to do this on my 91.

The driveshaft won't be a problem. Just look in the Yellow Pages under Drive Shafts. You should be able to get one made to whatever length you need. It's not a big deal.

Do all the pcm's from the engines work with all the other ones pretty easily?

Could I take like a 5.2 pcm and put it on my 3.9 dak and have the rev limiter kick in higher?

I grew up outside of chicago, near o'hare airport. i've been living in the Fort Walton Beach, FL area for the last 4 years though. alright update on this engine drop, its going to happen first part of August. i baught a new radiator, and have the electric fan. i checked out the new 4.7L, and the only thing that i may have a problem with doing myself is the A/C. i have a new compressor, but hooking it up and recharging it??? thats out of my hands. other then that i will let everyone know what's going on with this whole thing when i'm done.
thanks again for all the input

Sounds like a fun project!

Depending on your available funds, maybe you can install the HO parts and do a little clean up on that block -- I mean, if it's out, you might as well make as much use outta it as you can!

Good luck.

well guys, i finally got the engine swap started. i pulled the 2.5 out and installed the 4.7L. Fits like a glove. the only problem, WIRING!! But with the 98 and 2001 crysler manuals, i'm getting there, slowly. so far i've got to the point i can drive around, just my guages don't work, brake light is on, and it says i have no gas. like i said, slowly. but if any one has any info on engine swaps or dakota wiring, please email me and let me know.

Glad you are doing this a few months ahead of me. I have been considering swapping in a 4.7 in my 99 that currently has a 3.9 5-spd. Does anyone know if my 5-spd will bolt up to the 4.7? Have you figued out all your wiring and computer stuff?

Old post back from the dead. The 4-banger is a good motor, gets decent mileage. The trucks, especially 97 and up, are just too heavy for it to have any performance. There are a few tweaks you can do on it.
