sounds like the torque converter lockup is engaging and disengaging. i wouldnt really know why though, but i would bet thats whats happening.

If your vehicle has a TPS(throttle position sensor), replace it. your problem will probably go away. If you do not have a TPS, then your TQ Cnvtr is locking an unlocking.

All vehicles with electronic fuel injection have a TPS.
As for the rpm fluctuation, agreed. Sounds like the torque converter is popping in and out of lockup. Needs a good checkup. Hopefully, it's not a failing torque converter clutch. Perhaps it's just a bad lockup solenoid.

Please help...........we have a 1999 dodge dakota sport.v8.......with 89,000 mils on it...........purchased used a year ago.........we have had many a discussions as husband and wife on when to push the overdrive on/off button on the column.........when to have it on or off.........so many conflicting pieces of advice............also my husband being a mechanic and the logics of the old days...on what to do...........me as a wife wanting to drive it the right way and keep it out of the repair shop...............the owners manual is not very helpful.............the service dealership in the area says........."just get in and drive..........leaving it in overdrive..........even when driving across town in and out of stores.....for errands and getting to our place of business 4 miles away..........the only time to use the overdrive button...taking the overdrive off.......is when we are pulling a trailer in the hills of Kentucky or Tennessee..........otherwise again they say.......just get in and drive"....Is this good advice........am I doing right........or do I have to keep switching it on and off with the speed limit under 40 over 40 etc...etc......Please help me.........thanx, Marie

Just drive. Lock out overdrive when towing.

no subliminal messages given..........none to be looked for..........I just write in uncompleted to the point sentences....disregarding punctuation and grammer..........similar to charting on a patients chart for over 30 years as a nurse........grouping many thoughts and conversations into one small paragraph.........thanx for your input.....Marie

marie i have a 2000 rt and put a kenne bell charger on it and they recommend turning overdrive off unless you're driving on the interstate or freeway. definitely keeps it from going in & out of overdrive.
