I have a '00 4.7L auto, anytime I drop it into drive I here this weird noise kind of like something engaging or like a pump or something. It only lasts about a second or two. Just curious what it is and if its normal. Anyone help?

do you have a shift kit installed?

If so, more fluid is allowed to drain back into the pan and when placed in drive, which I can only assume you start the car and drive immediately, the accumulator, valves and torque converter all need to get their fill and it makes a noise like an electric motor.

Solution: ignore it and let the car warm up longer.

The sound you hear is the electronic shift solenoids clicking as it changes gears. It is absolutely normal.

I was going to say what Hemiman said. It's the selenoid packs.

Normal.

Yes, it's normal to hear that noise: Shift P>D...Buzzzz..clunk. I think there was a TSB for this and they fixed it in the later 45RFE & 545RFE trannies. I have a 2000 and I hear that buzz everytime also. It's nothing to worry about.

Cool...I figured it was something normal but just wanted to make sure. Thanks! One other thing though, when I am driving at a moderately slow acceleration rate I'll get to about 20 mph and it does a really hard shift I think from 2nd to 3rd. I know that it is not good but is that one of the common problems for dak trany or is that something that I should get looked at? It's been doing ever since I have had it...never changes or gets worse or anything. Its just always been there. Any advise on that?

No, you better have that looked at. There's TSB for that symptom:

Mine has been making that noise from day one. I took it to the dealer and they said it was normal. I've had ZERO problems with the transmission in 150,000 miles so they must have been right. The sound is like a small gear meshing into a spline or something like that. It's not real loud just there.
